Joshua Tree Monuments

Published by misha in Adventure, Camping, Climbing, Extreme, Hiking, Museums, North America, Parks, Photos, Sightseeings, Travel Stories, United States of America, Walking

joshua tree monuments

Josh Schweitzer’s ”monument” is aptly named, for although it is a domestic dwelling, in appearance it is more of a monolith and clear statement of the architect’s philosophy. The monument was built by the architect as a retreat for himself and five friends, and is located just outside the Joshua Tree National Park, California. It is a strange area of rugged and barren beauty, a high desert peppered with jagged rock, spiky yucca plants, cacti and Joshua trees. The house sits amid boulders, and its bold colors reflecting the drama of desert life. Photo by: SoLostAndFound / Bill Lindsay

haleakala volcano

Maui needs no introduction. Synonymous with surfing paradise, this idyllic Hawaiian island has far more to offer – from helicopter tours to horseback riding or diving with turtles and sharks, to biking down a 3,050 m volcano. The Haleakala Volcano, in a 11,595-ha park of the same name, earned its name from early Hawaiians who called the summit ‘house of the sun‘, believing it rose from behind the volcano’s peak. Kelimutu Mountain

kelimutu mountain

The island of Flores, east of Java and part of Indonesias Lesser Sunda islands, has many claims to fame. For one, it is a home of indigenous giant rat and dwarf elephants. For another archeologists recently unearthed the remains of ‘real-life hobbits‘, a race of people that only averaged a height of 1 m and a possible predecessor of the pygmy. Kelimutu Mountain is one of the best places in the world to watch the sun rise. Three volcanic crater lakes sit at its peak, and, because of the unusual geochemical conditions, the water in the lakes changes color. Photo by: Jano “Square”

The Blue Mountains in Australia are almost beg to be visited. The blue haze that is visible as you look out over the valley is created by the ninety-one species of eucalyptus that thrive in this UNESCO World Heritage site. The area covers more than 10,000 sq km and includes seven national parks. They are so vast and it is very easy for urbanites to escape into nature. Photo by: Nelson~Blue
