14,000 years of history declared in the National Antiquities museum in Sweden

national museum sweden

Swedish Museum of National Antiquities is a museum located in Stockholm, Sweden. That is responsible for Swedish cultural history and art from the Stone Age to the 16th century. The main museum building, the design of architects Bengt Romare and George Scherman 1935-1940, reflects an ambivalence between the predominant modern style of the era and the historical context given not only by the context requirements, but also the 19th century barracks and stables south of the museum designed by Fredrik Blom and built 1805-1817.

egypt The museum’s archaeological collection originates from four different regions: the Netherlands, Egypt, the Near East and the world of classical antiquity. In total, the collection consists of more than 80,000 objects. Among these are the majestic statues of the Roman emperors and prehistoric golden jewellery, as well as the impressive Egyptian mummy cases and Etruscan masterpieces in bronze. In the permanent presentations, you can admire almost 6,000 objects from that enormous collection. The other objects are kept in storage depots. Many have retained their original strong colours and gilding. You can also see different relic containers, several of which form part of the unique Linkping Treasure, as well as baptismal fonts in stone and other objects required for the alter and the services: missals, altar crosses, chalices, patens and vessels for the sacramental wine and communion bread.

The Vikings exhibition displays four thousand original objects from the Viking period. It describes daily life a thousand years ago, travel near and far, and tells the stories of men and women, aristocrats, farmers and thralls. A large model of one of Sweden’s first towns, Birka, is also on display. The exhibition also addresses the role the Vikings play in our own period: how nationalism and Nazism made use of the Viking period in propaganda. Madonna from Viklau Church, Sweden. Carved polychrome wood.

The Museum of National Antiquities is open every day of the week, 355 days a year, and admission is free. Visit the Gold Room and see Sweden’s finest treasures. Celebrating the 700 year anniversary of Saint Bridget called for a creative solution. One mixed event – Stockholm Gay Pride Parade

Published by Asya in Chillin, Europe, Events, Photos, Sweden, Travel Stories, Urban Tourism, Walking

parade
Stockholm Pride is a festival for LGBT individuals held yearly in Stockholm. Since the start in 1998, Stockholm Pride has grown to be one of Stockholm’s largest annual festivals, as well as the largest Pride celebration in Scandinavia. The festival for homosexuals, bisexuals and trans gender, Stockholm Pride, has already attained the status of concept and unshakable tradition.
The festival, the largest of its kind in the North, is not in the least a private occasion restricted to Stockholm’s gay circles. Increasingly each year, it has come to be one of the summer’s most popular events, attracting people from near and far. The colorful parade, in particular, has brought Stockholm’s and visitors out onto the streets. The marchers in the annual Stockholm Pride parade, including Center Party leader Maud Olofsson, started in the Swedish capital’s expensive Ostermalm area and ended in the Tantolunden park in Stockholm’s southern district.

Some 71 floats were signed up for the parade and organizers had anticipated up to 15,000 participants. Even that would have been a record, but with more than double that number turning out the parade stretched for two kilometers – from Humlegrden, past Sergelstorg, Slussen and up through to the Pride area at Tantolunden. Pride is also celebrated on other places in and around the city. Art exhibitions, debates, films, seminars, parties and other activities are some of the things made available outside Pride House and Pride Park. All activities are included in the programme.

the parade

THE PARADE – 2006 was a record year for the gay parade true Stockholm’s streets. A never ending stream of participating guests to Pride. All gave their tribute to HBT love and Peace. When the first parade guests arrived to Pride Park the last was still at the Royal palace. We estimate that 350.000 was included in the parade one way or another. Even if only 35.000 was consistent and stayed on the PARADE route from start to finish.
