The Violet Hour -Nightclub

Published by iv in Eating, Events, North America, Restaurants, United States of America

hjg

The country’s most exciting bar right at this moment is the The Violet Hour which just opened in Chicago’s Wicker Park.

The building is still unmarked on the outside. The crowd waiting to get in makes the location pretty obvious.

The curtains separate each of the bar’s three rooms, which house matching periwinkle furniture. The extravagantly  lounge,  in a serene blue and gray palette, crystal chandeliers that designer Thomas Schlesser created especially to provide a private experience.

Bartenders make each with painstaking precision, using housemade simple syrups, bitters and twice-filtered ice cubes. The classic cocktails (Gimlet, Negroni, Paloma) are superb. There’s also a small, carefully chosen selection of champagnes, wines and beers.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a large statue of Helios, the Greek god, and was erected on the island between 292 and 280 BC. Vamos a la playa!

Published by Asya in Europe, Hiking, Hotels, Monuments, Relaxing, Resorts, Spain, Swimming

Palma_skyline

Majorca (Mallorca in Spanish) is the most popular of Spain’s Mediterranean islands, drawing millions of visitors each year. About 209km from Barcelona and 145km from Valencia, Majorca has a coastline 500km long. Palma comes as a surprise to many people – it is stylish, sophisticated, intimate yet bursting with life. Half of Mallorca’s population live here, enjoying the island’s best restaurants, shops and nightlife as well as a thriving arts scene and a lively cafe society. The cathedral, the Palace of Almudaina, the fish exchange, and Plaza Mayor are just some of the places where visitors must stop. Fishing boats, pine groves and palm trees complement the most beautiful monuments. The capital of the island of Majorca, famous for its beaches and beautiful sea, has a beautiful historic quarter, deeply marked by history. The beautiful island is an explorer’s paradise in its exterior, although horribly overbuilt along certain coastal regions.

Mallorca-Soller

The coastal landscape of the island is graced with coves, beaches, and cliffs. A beautiful, diverse landscape, as well as a rich cultural life, are most inviting to a journey through every last inch of Majorca, as well as through the pleasures of its excellent cuisine.
Mallorca’s most popular hiking trail is the climb from the town of Alaro up to a ruined castle and hilltop chapel, which offers panoramic views of the sea and plains as far as Palma. From Alaro the walk takes about two hours to complete. The castle ruins on the hilltop date from the 15th century and dominate the landscape. At the summit there is a restaurant and bar to refresh weary climbers.
Mallorca

The golden sands of Majorca are famous, with lovely beaches such as Can Pastilla and El Arenal, but they tend to be overcrowded with sun worshippers on package tours. There are several good, though usually crowded, beaches accessible by bus from Palma. El Arenal, seven miles (11km) to the southeast of the city, attracts many German visitors as is reflected along its waterfront in the signs on restaurants, bars and hotels. The long beach boasts white sands and turquoise water. Palma Nova and Illetes, between six and ten miles (10 and 16km) to the southwest, are smaller but equally popular beaches. On the road to Palma Nova is Marineland, offering dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows as well as Polynesian pearl-diving demonstrations. The most popular beach on the entire island of Mallorca, Es Trenc, on the southeast coast between Cap de Salinas and Cap Blanc, can be reached by bus from the Plaza Espanya in Palma with departures three times a day. The local tourist office distributes an information leaflet on 40 beaches in the Palma area.
Cathedral Mallorca

The glory of Palma – a magnificent Gothic cathedral whose sandstone walls and flying buttresses seem to rise out of the sea. You enter through a side door, passing a small museum, head for the west portal and gaze down the long nave. Light pours in through the rose window, one of the world’s largest, 12m across and studded with 1,236 pieces of stained glass. The columns are ringed with wrought-iron candelabra by Gaudi; his most controversial addition is the unfinished Crown of Thorns, fashioned from cardboard and cork and suspended above the altar. It dominates the waterfront and backs on to the old part of the city where medieval and later churches are found along with Renaissance buildings like the City Hall and the stately homes with their beautiful patios. The maze of streets at the back of the cathedral leads to the beautiful Banys Arabs, the old Moorish bath house, which is also worth a visit.

St Tropez – exclusive and famous resort in the south of France

Published by Asya in Europe, France, Relaxing, Resorts, Romantic, Ships, Shopping

sttropez
The seaside resort town Saint Tropez, France, is still very popular with the tourists, although the jet set and the in-crowd have long since left it behind. Set on the lovely blue water of the Bay of Saint-Tropez, this modern version of a medieval town is most popular for the line of yachts along the quay, and the facing line of terrace cafes, divided by a parade of strolling tourists and slow cruising expensive cars. A little fishing village that grew up around a port founded by the Greeks of Marseille, which was destroyed by the Saracens in 739 and finally fortified in the late Middle Ages. Its sole distinction from the myriad other fishing villages along this coast was its inaccessibility. This amazing place is home to stunning beaches, a relaxing atmosphere and ample recreational opportunities.

st trop Cobblestone streets lead to alleys housing some of the most stylish shops, galleries, hotels, and restaurants. Apart from the choice shopping and nightlife scenes, there are also forty private beaches that provide seclusion and encourage a seductive mood. Extraordinary views of the Citadel, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding mountains can be enjoyed from almost any point in the area. The harbour has turned into a parade of the jet set showing off how they like to squander their money on things that we used to call “boats” in the old days. Always good for a laugh and then you can take your bottle of rose and walk the pier to have some good views of both the harbour, the sea and the setting sun on St Tropez….

sttropez
The most serious collection of beaches are along the Baie de Pampelonne, south of St Tropez and east of Ramatuelle. The beaches of resort town St Tropez are mostly away from the center, and require transportation. Nearby Beaches- a few beaches are located nearby to the west of the town, within reasonable walking distance. East of the town, the Plage des Graniers is in a little cove past the cemetery, a long walk or a short drive away. Further east, out the route des Salins, is the Plage des Cannebiers.

saint-tropez Celebrity-watching can prove interesting here with stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Don Johnson, Quincy Jones, Barbra Streisand, Jack Nicholson, Robert DeNiro and Elton John all making regual appearances. St Tropez is all about leisure, and one of the most popular activities here is sunbathing on the beach. You can also get pampered in a spa or shop in elegant boutiques. Night life is very lively and often one can see helicopters bringing elegant guests to private parties, in one of the many luxurious villas in the bay. “People watching” is a favorite sport in Saint-Tropez in the summer. Visitors like to sit in the outdoor cafes, hoping either to be seen or to see someone else. There is an endless supply of bars and nightclubs to suit the most elegant tastes here as well, but make sure you bring a very healthy credit card!

RIMINI – “Ibiza of the Adriatic”

Published by Asya in Cultural, Europe, Hotels, Italy, Monuments, Relaxing, Resorts, Restaurants, Swimming

Nightlife-Rimini
Rimini is a city of art and the capital of the province, and a visit is worthwhile to its
monuments, which are the living expression of its past glory as a Roman outpost and stronghold, to later become the capital of the Malatesta Seigniory, who left a legacy of some of the most significant monuments in the history of art, such as the Malatesta Temple, an emblem of the Renaissance. Birthplace of Federico Fellini, Rimini is Europe’s largest seaside resort. With it comes the good and the bad, the tasteful and the down right brash. It has a large commercial club culture – amounting to around 150 clubs at the last count, but thankfully it also has a fine old town. The water is perfect with a soft and velvety shore that slopes gently into the shallows. The sun is hot, but not too hot for comfort. Warmth is everywhere, the warmth of people of all ages and from all countries, come to meet other people at Rimini.

Rimini is a main summer holiday destination for the Italians and the vast beach is crowded with colourfull sun umbrellas and deck chairs throughout the sunny season. Because of this the town has a vibrant night life and the centre has many nightclubs and attractions. Along side this Rimini has a rich cultural history with many historic churches and buildings.

Rimini-Arco-d'AugustoThe Arch of Augustus – The arch was built in 27 B.C. as an honorary gate to celebrate Octavian Augustus. Is made entirely of Istrian limestone. It once formed part of the stone-built city walls, the remains of which are still visible, but is now isolated because the adjacent structures were demolished in the 1930’s. The structure, which was originally topped by a parapet bearing a statue of the Emperor, is richly decorated with religious and political references. The archway was simply intended as a gateway into the town and recent excavations have revealed that the arch was attached to the city walls.
bridgeThe Malatesta Temple – This is one of the finest and most facinating structures in Rimini. Giotto decorated the Temple, which was built on the site of the 13th century church of San Francesco, and indeed one of his wooden crucifixes istemple still housed inside. It was conceived by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta as a memorial tomb for his family and although building work began in 1447 it was still incomplete on his death. It features as an excellent example of the beauty of true Renaissance-style architecture. The temple, which was recently consecrated a basilica, has undergone restoration work financed by the Cassa di Risparmio di Rimini Foundation. Its completion, in Jubilee year, returned the marble and bright colors of the interior chapels to their former splendour.

bars RiminiRimini is famous for its nightlife, and is known as the “Ibiza of the Adriatic”. The city itself does not have any clubs, but many of its bars have dance floors that are frequently packed. Here the atmosphere is more geared to tourists and families. The city is notable in disco music history for its Cosmic Club who’s DJ Daniele Baldelli played records from a moving elevator to the young experimental audience. Baldelli’s important contribution to the world of DJing is perhaps overshadowed by his American counterparts, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. You will find a large number of wine bars, pubs and creperies in the three small squares that stretch from the old fish market to the main street in the city. The zone is packed with the young people all year round and generally is the first stop on an evening out where they mix and invite each other to the discotheques later in the evening. You can begin with the Black Cock, then move on to La Cantinetta, or choose one of the bars for a drink and then head for the marble tables of the fish market. Any combination is fine but be careful as the setting is so pleasant you may not wish to leave for the entire evening.

parchi_collage_1gkdThe Aquafan water park is located in the town of Rimini. Thisparchi_collage_1k is the largest water park throughout the whole of Europe and is open during the months ranging from June to September. This is an excellent place to enjoy hours of fun filled family entertainment. The rides and slides are state-of-the-art and are updated and renewed on a regular basis. The park is open daily from 10am – 6:30pm. Guests can look forward to some exciting water attractions, such as the Elephant pool, the Baby Lagoon, the Enchanted Hill, the Baby Antarctic Beach, a Surfing Hill, a Kamikaze Twist slide, a wave pool and white water rapid rides.

The young people prefer to Sozopol

Published by Asya in Arts, Bulgaria, Cultural, Europe, Events, History, Monuments, Restaurants, Ships, Sightseeings, Swimming, Travel Stories, Urban Tourism, Walking

nightlife
The town of Sozopol is situated 31km south-east of Burgas, and 421km of Sofia. The town lies on a small rocky peninsula in farthest southern part of the Burgas Bay. After 1925 the town started to grow in the direction of Harmanite Area and today it occupies considerable larger territory on the mainland.
Old Sozopol
The earliest settlements in the area belonged to the Thracian tribes of Nipsei and Skirimian. In the 7th century BC Greek colonisers settled there and called the town after their god of Apollon, Apolonia. To the honour of Apollo, the construction of a thirteen-metre high bronze statute of the god was carried out by a sculptor named Kalamis. Apolonia developed mainly as a trading centre for honey, wax, corn, wine, olive oil, olives, textiles, jewellery, and pottery. Apolonia was frequently in economic and political disputes, including occasional wars, with the Doric inhabitants of Messembria (present-day Nessebar). During the reign of Knan Kroum it was within the borders of Bulgaria and like all other sea towns it frequently fell under the rule of Byzantium. In the Middle Ages it preserved its status of a district town. It was severely devastated in the middle of 14 century. Later it was conquered and sold by the knights of Amadeus of Savoy. After a long siege the town fell under Turkish rule in 1453. Later the town became the biggest fishing centre of the Black Sea coast and developed recreation and tourism. Very popular resort. Gets very busy during the summer. Good variety of restaurants, cafes, night clubs, 2 cinemas, shops, etc. Nessebar and Primorsko.
the wall
The atmosphere of Sozopol is ancient and artistic. The impression is coming from the cobbled streets and high fences in front of which the old women sit and chat, knit laces and sell jams. Among the architectural monuments, more than 45 , are two ancient churches from the Renaissance period (14 th century) – St. Zosim Church and The Holy Virgin Church and many houses dating back to the 17 th century, several of which now-a-days are having social functions, hosting an art gallery, restaurant, medical centre and a national weekly news paper.
The National Revival period saw the building of typical Black Sea houses- ground floors of stone generally used for storage supported overhanging upper stories of wood, with protruding bay windows and sheltered eaves. Clustered along the narrow peninsula s cobblestone streets and alleys, some 45 houses are classified as cultural monuments.
The beach is very great and great. There is cafes and young humans that go to party and entertainment in Sozopol are from the tourists small barrooms, opened non stop… great partys.

Lisbon – The city of seven hills

Published by Asya in Arts, Europe, Hotels, Monuments, Museums, Portugal, Relaxing, Shopping, Sightseeings, Urban Tourism, Walking

comersio square

A city set on seven hills, as the legend tells, Lisbon is the kind of place where you can sit at street cafes and watch the world go by. But for the eager there are also plenty of cultural activities. In addition to architectural masterpieces at Belem, Lisbon has over 50 museums to visit – some of which are Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, National Museum of Contemporary Art, National Coach Museum, and Carmo Archaeological Museum. The city of Lisbon is rich in architecture – Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Traditional Portuguese, Modern and Post-Modern constructions can be found all over the city. But, Lisbon isn’t all culture and history, Bairro Alto is the center of nightlife with various restaurants and bars where melancholic traditional Portuguese music, Fado, can also be listened.
belem

It’s a shame that tourists have no access to Belem Palace, but even from outside this is still something you shouldn’t miss. This is the official residence of the President and was built in 1559 by the noble D. Manuel de Portugal and is located in an area that you will definitively, surely not want to miss. In the 18th century this palace was called ‘palace of the lions’ and its badge seems to be the lion – solar symbol that combines Wisdom and Power – that can be seen in several locations around the palace.
The entrance to this Palace is watched over by two guards. The guards use a magnificent uniform, a curious helmet with a white tail and a sword that is hung on their belt… It makes you think you’ve gone back in time. Belém Tower was built in the Age of the Discoveries in tribute to the patron saint of the city, Saint Vicente. The Belem Tower is to Lisbon what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris or Big Ben is to London. In 1983 UNESCO classified it as a World Heritage Site.
the monastery
It is the city’s most photographed landmark, which along with the marvelous Jeronimos Monastery should top your list of must-see monuments. The Jeronimos Monastery is the most impressive symbol of Portugal’s power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. It was built to commemorate Vasco Da Gama’s voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success.
aquaduct

The Águas Livres Aqueduct (“Aqueduct of Free Waters”) is an historic aqueduct in the city of Lisbon. It is one of the most remarkable examples of 18th-century Portuguese engineering. The main course of the aqueduct covers 18 km, but the whole network of canals extends through nearly 58 km. Construction started in 1731 under the direction of Italian architect Antonio Canevari, replaced in 1732 by a group of Portuguese architects and engineers, including Manuel da Maia, Azevedo Fortes and José da Silva Pais. In 1748, although the project was still unfinished, the aqueduct finally started to bring water to the city of Lisbon, a fact celebrated in a commemorative arch built in the Amoreiras neighbourhood. From this period on, construction was overseen by other architects, including Carlos Mardel of Hungary and others. During the reigns of José I and Maria I, the network of canals and fountains was greatly enlarged.Bairro Alto is an area of central Lisbon. It functions as a residential, shopping and entertainment district. Today, the Bairro Alto is the heart of Lisbon’s youth and of the Portuguese capital’s nightlife. Lisbon’s Punk, Gay, Metal, Goth, Hip Hop and Reggae scenes, all have the Bairro as their home, due to the number of clubs and bars dedicated to each of them. The fado, Portugal’s national song, still survives in the new Lisbon’s nightlife. The crowd is a mix of local and tourist, straight and gay, and almost anything else imagined.
lisbon

Rising from the river and reached by a footbridge is one of the world’s largest aquariums, designed by American architect Peter Chermeyeff. It is the closest thing visitors get to deep-sea diving without any of the risks, with about 25,000 fish, seabirds, and mammals in an enormous central tank, the size of four Olympic-sized swimming pools. Visitors can look into it from different levels for close-ups of the various creatures, including different species of sharks. It is the first aquarium ever to incorporate world ocean habitats within a single environment, with impressive recreations of various ocean ecosystems — the Antarctic tank containing penguins, and the Pacific tank with otters playing in rock pools.

They constitute a unique resource, in terms of volume and importance, of material from the Phoenician and Carthaginian tombs. The fortified Upper Town is an outstanding example a fortified acropolis which preserves in an exceptional way in its walls and in its urban fabric successive imprints of the earliest Phoenicians settlements and the Arab and Catalan periods through to the Renaissance bastions.
