One of this towns is Melnik (The White town). It is located among tall sandstone hills at the foot of the Pirin Mountain. Melnik is a nature and architectural reserve of an unrivalled beauty. A total of 95 buildings from the 17th-18th century have been fully preserved,and they are have become cultural monuments. The houses lie on the steep slopes of the picturesque Melnik rocks. There are numerous well-preserved 18th-19th century churches in Melnik, all of which are ornately frescoed.
