Qatar is a small, thumb shaped peninsula some 11, 437 square km in size, located into the Persian Gulf from the east side of the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia is to the west and the United Arab Emirates to the south. Qatar is a dynamic, modernizing, rapidly developing country, its area may be very small, but the independent emirate is exceedingly wealthy, with one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, thanks to its oil and gas resources. The official language is Arabic but English is widely spoken and understood.
