The Conservatory of Flowers, built in 1878, is a gorgeous (and restored in 2003) example of the beautiful greenhouses that were constructed during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries to display exotic plants and flowers. This one is built in a dramatic Victorian style, and is one of the architectural highlights of the golden gate park. Golden Gate Park is over 3 miles long & 9 blocks wide, 1017 acres.

Great cities have great bridges. New York has the Brooklyn Bridge; Venice is a city of beautiful pontes crowned by the Bridge of Sighs. Think San Francisco and you think of the Golden Gate. In Philadelphia, our great span is named in honor of Benjamin Franklin.Plans to construct a bridge between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey on the other side of the Delaware river were made as early as 1818.
The bridge was designed by Paul Philippe Cret, the architect who was also in large part responsible for Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Driving over the bridge and passing under its two tall towers connected by tapering cables, puts one in mind of Dorothy entering into Kingdom of Oz — there is a fearful exhilaration. This bridge does not merely span the Delaware — it soars over the river. Painted a resonant blue, at some points the bridge seems to merge with the sky.

Alcatraz. The Rock. Perhaps the most famous prison in the world; certainly few place names are as evocative. From the mid 1930s until the mid 1960s, this small rocky island in San Francisco Bay was home to America’s premier maximum-security prison, created to incarcerate a small number of inmates who were so dangerous, so violent, and so escape-prone that they could not be managed safely in other prisons.
Many people, though, are unaware of the wealth of other stories to be learned on the island. Alcatraz is now home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Civil War-era buildings dotting the island give insight into the 19th century when the island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. You can also see visible reminders of the American Indian Occupation that started in 1969 after the prison closed, highlighting an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement.

Sucre is the constitutional capital of
Bolivia. The city of Sucre is also known as
the City of Four Names, being those names La Plata, Charcas, Ciudad Blanca (White City), and Sucre. Founded as Chuquisaca in 1538, the city received its present name in 1840, in honor of the first Bolivian president, Antonio José de Sucre. In 1809 Sucre became one of the first cities in
South America to revolt against Spanish rule. On December 13, 1991
UNESCO declared the Historic City of Sucre a
“World Heritage Site” in recognition of its rich history and its wealth of colonial architecture. The city attracts thousands of tourists every year thanks to its well-conserved downtown with
buildings from the 18th and 19th century. Its many well-preserved 16th-century religious buildings illustrate the blending of local architectural traditions with styles imported from Europe. Population is 247,300 in 2006.
