Famous as the smallest island ever to have been partitioned, St Maarten ha been shared by the Dutch and French since 1630, when they united to repulse the Spanish. Until 1817 nobody bothered with boundaries and you can still move freely about the island; but despite the mixed Dutch, French and African heritage, you can fail to distinguish the contrasting styles of the island’s French and Dutch communities. The British Virgin Islands are where the dreams come true. They are tropical island beach perfection and the most popular cruising area in the Caribbean. Virgin Gorda combines the best features of all of them, packing enormous variety into its 21 sq km. Dramatic mahogany forests crown the volcanic Gorda Peak, the island’s centre and highest point. The Peak is one of the several National Parks on Gorda and its neighboring cays of Fallen Jerusalem, Prickly Pear, and Saba Rock, and its gorgeous offshore waters. Anegada is lying in a remote corner of the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico, Anegada is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands. With a population of just 200, the remoteness of Anegada is one of its main attractions. Most visitors come to the island to relax and unwind on beautiful white sandy beaches.
