The Cold war’s symbol

brandenburger

The Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and the symbol of Berlin, Germany. It is located between the Pariser Platz and the Platz des 18 Marz and is the only remaining gate of a series through which one formerly entered Berlin. One block to its north lies the Reichstag. The sandstone construction, built from 1788–91 to plans by C.G. Langhans, has 12 Doric columns and is based on the Propylaea of the Acropolis in Athens. On both sides, six Doric columns support the 11 meter-deep transverse beam, dividing the gate into five passageways. In 1794 the building was crowned with the quadriga and goddess of victory created by Schadow, which face eastwards towards the city center. The Brandenburg Gate was surrounded by further buildings which were destroyed in the war.

It’s a joyous riot of color,
abundant and flowing,
a corner of nature just barely tamed,
a paradise made to order by an Impressionist to please the eye

Hotel Fox, Copenhagen

Hotel VW Fox
Copenhagen is a great shopping city for design pilgrims, but for some reason the choice of hotels can be aesthetically underwhelming considering the superb quality of nature and interiors on offer there. So when a new experimental hotel with spectacular rooms and affordable rates opened its doors in April in Denmark, there was cause for celebration. Hotel Fox was initially conceived as part of a marketing strategy for the launch of the new VW Fox. The idea was to get young designers and artist to paint some rooms and create a hip urban hotel that would open at the same time as the European launch of the car. However, what makes Hotel Fox really interesting is that the people chosen to curate the project were Berlin’s Die Gestalten Verlag – publishers of some of the most sumptuous, cutting -edge graphics and illustration books on the market.

Eurostar – the fastest rail link between London and Belgium or France.

eurostar.jpg

If you saw the film Mission Impossible, you’ve already seen Europe’s “Chunnel” passenger train in action. In that movie, Tom Cruise fended off a helicopter from the Eurostar’s roof until the chopper blew up inside the English Channel Tunnel.

Most Eurostar trips are less dramatic. More than two dozen high-speed electric trains (based on French TGV designs) connect London with Lille, Paris, Brussels, Avignon, the French Alps, and the Disneyland Paris resort at speeds of up to 300 km/h or 186 mph.

Palace Of Versailles

palace-of-versailles-4.jpg

Every king’s dream, Versailles was the residence of the French king and the cultural heartbeat of Europe for about 100 years — until the Revolution of 1789 ended the notion that God deputized some people to rule for Him on Earth. Louis XIV spent half a year’s income of Europe’s richest country turning his dad’s hunting lodge into a palace fit for a divine monarch. Louis XV and Louis XVI spent much of the 18th century gilding Louis XIV’s lily. In 1837, about 50 years after the royal family was evicted, King Louis Philippe opened the palace as a museum. Europe’s next-best palaces are Versailles wannabes.Versailles is more than a palace, it’s a symbol – of absolute monarchy, of the excess that brought about a revolution. Occupying a pleasant Parisian suburb, the chateau is one of the city’s top tourist destinations and with good reason. The park and gardens are a joy in their own right, elaborately landscaped with grand fountains and central canal; stand on the terrace, with the palace behind you, and soak up a view fit for a Sun King.
