Named after Aeolus, god of the winds, the Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago not far from Sicily’s northern coast in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Also emerged as the Lipari Islands and Isole Eolie, the principal islands of the chain are Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Stromboli, Panarea and Vulcano. Between them the islands boast beautiful scenery, great beaches, castles, thermal resorts, water sports, good fishing and, of course, some live volcanic activity. Photo by: adam butler photography

The largest of the Pontine Islands between Rome and Naples, Ponza is a volcanic remnant lying 33 km south of Cape Circeo, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s a mixture of vividly coloured cliffs and crags 12 km long and never more than 2 km wide. Such rocks, kaolin and tufa has eroded into fantastic shapes, inspiring names like ‘the monk’ and ‘the giant pair of pants’. In the northern shadow of Monte Epomeo, chestnuts flourish among the typical Mediterranean trees like holm oak, cypress, cork, almond and olives. Citrus groves scent the whole island. Despite of its high population and million of tourists, Ischia still has dozen of deserted beaches and coves for chillin’.
