Mallorcan schizophrenia

Mallorca is easily the most diverse, something which is, of course, no secret to millions of tourists. Through an ambitious program of self-improvement, it has successfully raised its profile from the mass-tourism morass of a decade or so ago. Palma gets slicker by the minute as new galleries, museums, boutiques and restaurants fling their doors open. The inevitable label of “the new Barcelona” has been mooted, but, for the moment, this city of 335,000 souls has a long way to go.

Cap Rocat, Majorca

Cap Rocat is a 19th-century former military fortress along the southern edge of the Bay of Palma de Majorca, Spain. Menorca

menorca

Menorca is the smallest sister island of Majorca. The island offers a beautifully hilly landscape and pine-fringed coast with more beaches than all the other Balearic Islands – combined with silver and golden sand to tiny calas. It is blissfully free of tourist development and was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. Photo by: Stu Worrall

It is homeland of kings, artists and great figures in history, but even of characters that you can only meet in the streets and lanes of this town. who doesn’t know pizza, spaghetti and mandolin? In fact, the beauties of this enchanting land are renowned: from the archaeological finds to the handcraft shops. The visitor is fascinated by the cooking just as much as by the majesty of Mount Vesuvius or the Capri‘s Stacks and by the Bourbon’s china from Capodimonte. The citizens say that you can identify a Neapolitan everywhere, because who is native of this land is a carrier, in his DNA, of all the typicality of an original and unequaled town. Tourists cannot be indifferent to the enigmatic fascination of the market, the fishing boats and the women on the balconies, as they achieve an inexplicable value in this town. The bracing and silvery air of Naples, rich in scents and perfumes mixed with the saltiness of the wonderful sea that laps on its shores, can remember that even the air itself, like Venus, was born between the clear waves of the Mediterranean.
