This summer, almost in every emerging neighborhood in Leipzig, Germany the streets were buzzing of artists and students. Early 20th-century cinema turned intimate music hall, Mohna. Outside, on Wolfgang-Heinze-Strasse, three heavily pierced student-types in studded jackets were hurrying toward Conne Island, one of Leipzig’s better-known music venues. Therefore, Leipzig does call itself the City of Music.

This year is the 325th anniversary of Bach’s birth, and Leipzig is celebrating with concerts, festivals and the reopening of the newly designed Bach Museum. In the last two years, this city of about half a million residents — many of them students at the 600-year-old University of Leipzig — is where some of the most innovative house and techno music is being created.

The music scene there is as good as those in other, bigger cities like Cologne or Berlin, but everyone knows each other. It’s not commercial. It seems the music scene there is still very untouched by cynicism and speculation and people really just want to enjoy good live music.

But only in recent years has Leipzig become a desirable place to live and visit. A few decades ago, it was a city to be avoided: a polluted town known mostly for its book publishing industry and the trade fairs that have been held there since the Middle Ages. Now the surplus of abandoned factory buildings, which had produced mechanical parts for products like watches and cars, and textiles, is a boon, attracting creative entrepreneurs, artists and musicians who have reclaimed the old spaces. There’s an underground party or event in an abandoned factory or building every weekend. Getting there: Leipzig is just over an hour from Berlin by train. Tickets are about 43 euros, or $52 at $1.20 to the euro.

Artist: Stefan Eberstadt, Munich
Structural Engineering: Thomas Beck, Munich
Steel Construction: Alfred Mayrhofer
Total Surface: 9m2
Construction Cost: approx € 25.000
Perched between art and architecture, form and function, private and public property, the Rucksack House is a hovering illuminated space that looks like a cross between temporary scaffolding and minimal sculpture.
Its design is the result of fundamental artistic questions: How can sculpture function outside the context of art? What claim does the sculpture has today? Where does sculpture apply in today’s world?

Stefan Eberstadt:
Why should a building end where its walls normally end? How could it be expanded? The claustrophobic living conditions I experienced in mega cities like London or New York when living in small apartments with sometimes only one window towards the outside world have initiated the idea. I imagine the space in front of this window becoming real and accessible. Just stick some space on!

The concept of the Rucksack House has a dark reddish-brown color which comes from the material from which it is made – exterior grade polywood with an absorbent resin surface. It evokes solidity and provides a contrast to the façade from which the house hangs. The choice of material is inexpensive, accessible and economical.

The exterior is not as interesting as its interiors. Among the signature elements are the 600 m long galleries where body-in-whites are transported to and from the paint shop. There a car production line passes over multilevel floor plates with platforms that function as open office spaces.

With more than 800 years of history, the Leipzig Trade Fair is one of the oldest in the world. Today it devotes particular attention to the markets of Central and Eastern Europe. Authors and readers meet here for Germany’s second-largest book fair, the literature festival “Leipzig Reads”, and in the project “Art at the Trade Fair” the exhibition grounds become a space for art works. The Leipzig Trade Fair successfully unites past tradition and the present. The world’s oldest trade fair venue, it is also one of the most modern. It was only in 1996 that the impressive new complex was opened, its futuristic glass and steel architecture symbolising transparency and cosmopolitan thinking. As a modern provider of services with long years of trade fair experience Leipziger Messe is able to offer customers and partners the full spectrum of its expertise. This is where custom trade fair concepts are developed to satisfy the needs of exhibitors and visitors alike.

The most spectacular aspect to the Leipzig Trade Fair is undoubtedly its laminated glass hall, designed by Ian Ritchie Architects of London. The glass hall represents a late 20th century equivalent of London’s Crystal Palace – a totally glazed enclosure using laminated glass in all 28,000m2 of its overhead glazing. It is the principal building through which all visitors to the Trade Fair enter and provides a surface area of 242m x 79m for reception, information and meetings. It is linked directly to the Trade Fair’s exhibition halls through a series of tubular, laminated glass bridges.
Now it seems all has been forgiven because the site is back in Google’s index, including Germany‘s version. From a webmaster’s perspective, it must be nice to see Google respond so quickly once the necessary corrections are made. Golem’s article hit the web on Saturday (10-21), which indicates the guys at Leipziq Trade Fair were informed of Google’s decision sometime before that. This, in turn, points to the changes being done, the resubmission request being made and acted upon by Google before this past weekend was over.

First documented in 1015, and endowed with city and market privileges in 1165, the city of Leipzig has fundamentally shaped the history of Saxony and of Germany. Leipzig has always been known as a place of commerce. The Leipzig Trade Fair, which began in the middle ages, became an event of international importance; especially as a point of contact to the East-European economic bloc (Comecon) of which East Germany was a member.
Once again in 2008, the period from 26-29 February will be an important trade show of the year for the machinery, plant and machine-tool construction industry as well as the automotive sector. Exhibitors will be covering the whole range of manufacturing technology and the production of machine tools and special-purpose machinery in the Leipzig Trade Fair’s modern, well structured exhibition halls.
