Brussels Flower Carpet from 14 to 17 August 2008

Every two years the Grand Place in the center of Brussels is the location of the “Flower Carpet”. During the third week of August every even year, begonia cultivators from Ghent decorate here according to a theme. The famous Carpet of Flowers covers 300 m² right in the center of the Grand Place. Every flower carpet has a unique theme, and this year it is inspired by the alchemy of the Middle Ages, with 9 rosettes mounted on vast rotating platforms to form a giant kaleidoscopic wind rose.

Ghent – once the largest town in western Europe

Eurostar – the fastest rail link between London and Belgium or France.

If you saw the film Mission Impossible, you’ve already seen Europe’s “Chunnel” passenger train in action. In that movie, Tom Cruise fended off a helicopter from the Eurostar’s roof until the chopper blew up inside the English Channel Tunnel.

Most Eurostar trips are less dramatic. More than two dozen high-speed electric trains (based on French TGV designs) connect London with Lille, Paris, Brussels, Avignon, the French Alps, and the Disneyland Paris resort at speeds of up to 300 km/h or 186 mph.

Dubai invests in artificial resort islands to attract tourism dollars

In Dubai, space for hotels and beachfront villas is being created on four artificial islands being constructed off the crowded coastline. The first and smallest was completed in 2004 and is shaped like a palm tree. A phase under construction will comprise 264 smaller islands forming a vast map of the world. Altogether, four of these huge new projects are to be crafted out of rock and sand. Once building construction begins, concrete will flow in huge amounts.
