If you approach Porto Santo by air, the whole island seems a glorious-golden yellow against the glistening cobalt blue sea. The island is known as ‘painting made by god’ and is 46 km to the northeast of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. The island tending to remind of North Africa, rather than Europe – a starkly beautiful desert landscape of palm trees and cacti, dotted with pine groves and small wheatfields. Photo by: Tiagoto

In the eastern Caribbean just north of Antigua, Barbuda is one of the Leeward Islands. On one side of the island the Atlantic Ocean ravages the wild beaches, strewing them with driftwood and shells, while on the other the calm Caribbean Sea creates endless stretches of perfect white and pink sandy beaches. The island is much less developed than many of the Caribbean neighbours. Popular activities include swimming and snorkelling, as the clear waters abound with turtles and tropical fish. This guest post has been written by Nick Ball, editor of Lanzarote Guidebook, the free tourist guide to Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. The seven specks of Spain which are located off the coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. They are the tops of some of the biggest mountains on the planet, mostly hidden under the Atlantic Ocean, but rising to a spectacular 2,351 m above sea level. Amazing! Photo by: swilton

As the name speaks this is a truly beautiful island. A combination of a rugged coastline, attractive fishing villages and white sandy beaches, has made it a magnet for summer tourists. In July and August the population can increase ten-fold, all crammed into 84 sq km. However, even in peak times, it is possible to lose oneself on the island of contrasts. The south-west coast is a true wild land, while the sheltered eastern side can feel positively Mediterranean in spite of its Atlantic location. Photo by: HCLM

On Algarve coastline of Portugal are located some of the most beautiful secluded coves, broken up by fabulous rugged cliffs and fantastic grottoes. Here the small beaches are caught between high extraordinary rock formations which act as wind- and wave-breakers. The water is a little colder than the Mediterranean’ (it is situated on the Atlantic), but the weather is beautiful and the wind keeps the climate from becoming too hot.
