Downhill skiing and snowboarding in Kuopio

Published by vanhal in Extreme, Finland, Skiing, Snowboarding

downhill-skiing-1.jpg

Downhill skiing and snowboarding can be an exhilarating experience but, as with any sport, safety should come first. Excess speed and loss of control are the primary factors associated with snow skiing fatalities. There are few cities where you find downhill skiing slopes in the immediate vicinity of the centre, as you do in Kuopio. The western run of the Puijo Slopes, only 1.5 km from the city centre, appeals even to the most discerning skiers and snowboarders. The more gentle gradient of the eastern Antikkala run makes it a perfect family slope. There are also four other downhill ski centres in the Kuopio region. The Kasurila Ski Centre in Siilinjärvi, only 20 km from Kuopio, is a great place for snowboarders and families with children. The Tahko Slopes in Nilsiä are the biggest and grandest of the region’s ski centres.

Published by vanhal in Biking, Brazil, Cultural, Monuments, Sightseeings, Travel Stories

the-statue-of-christ-redeemer-brazil.jpg

The statue of Christ the Redeemer is probably one of the most recognized images of Brazil . It is located in Rio de Janeiro on the top of the Corcovado Mountain . Overlooking the city, it probably has one of the best views that can be found of Rio . The statue is currently 72 years old and has gone under several extensive renovations, which included adding an elevator in 2002.
The statue was first conceived in 1921 when a campaign to gather funds from the Catholic Church was held. The idea for the statue came when the country was to celebrate 100 years of independence. Donations were not received to build the statue until about ten years later. The first person commissioned to design the statue was Carlos Oswaldo. His vision for the statue was for Christ to be carrying a cross, holding a globe in his hands, and standing over a pedestal that was supposed to represent the world. Later, the public of Rio thought that Christ with open arms would be the best representation of the city. The statue was not sculpted in Brazil ; it was instead sculpted in France by a sculptor whose name was Paul Landowski.

This will usually be done at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace.Visiting the Kumsusan Memorial Palace to pay homage to Kim Il Sung is quite an experience. Entry is through a long passageway which has the longest travelator that I have seen in my life. I was advised by my guides that it was installed at the initiative of the Great Leader General Kim Jung Il so that visitors would not get tired when walking to the palace. “The great leader is always thinking of the comfort of his people”,

China’s boom-town capital, seat of the Forbidden City and home to more than 14 million people, opens its gates to the world as host of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008. Book your tickets for the August 8th – 24th, 2008 spectacular, at which more than 200 countries – the most for any games in history – are set to compete. Some wonder whether Beijing will, like Athens, struggle to finish building all the new stadiums and transport systems on time. These people have never seen the Chinese work. Bank on it being ready a year early. It’s too soon to know which athletes and events to look out for, but American swim-star Michael Phelps, the Romanian girls gymnastic team and the African distance runners are sure to put on a show.
