Grass is a lovely spot to sip a colorful, tropical bottle surrounded by dense flora in Miami. Grass is 2 in 1 – lounge and restaurant, relax and eat, accompanied with quality chill music. A variety of substantial flower buds and plant specimens float in lit jars behind the bar, and the open air setting’s breezes rustle palm fronds overhead.

Martinique’s Creole chic is a Caribbean wonder. As a Department of France, the island gets all the benefits of the north European Euro – zone, allied to the technicolor brilliance of West Indian music and culture. It’s a heady and glamorous mix. The downside of the French umbilical is overdevelopment and overcrowding, which can be dismaying if you arrive from another island, but after a day or so the sheer of the island will captivate you. Eleuthera is the Greek word for freedom and it was in search of religious freedom that the island was accidentally colonised in 1648 by Captain William Sayles and a group of Puritans from Bermuda. The shipwrecked adventurers found a heaven of peace, cleared of its original Lucayan Indian inhabitants by Spanish slavers and rapidly developed their settlements along its 145 km of curving bays, offshore cays and turquoise water. The Bimini Cays, 75 km east of Miami and Florida, mark the highest point of a submarine ridge that emerges from the turquoise water at North Bimini, and runs the length of the island along the Gulf Stream. There in complete contrast to the sandy slopes of the bay side where most people live, there’s only a narrow coastal ledge before the ocean floor drops into a sudden deep. This is the fishing capital of the Bahamas, the site of the world record catches of marlin, sailfish, giant tuna, swordfish, wahoo and bonefish. Photo by: picmanbahamas

Famous as the smallest island ever to have been partitioned, St Maarten ha been shared by the Dutch and French since 1630, when they united to repulse the Spanish. Until 1817 nobody bothered with boundaries and you can still move freely about the island; but despite the mixed Dutch, French and African heritage, you can fail to distinguish the contrasting styles of the island’s French and Dutch communities. One of Mexico’s largest islands, Cozumel lies 20 km from the mainland, and 60 km south of Cancun. It’s flat limestone formation shaped like a holster and pierced by dozens of cenotes (water filled sinkholes), many with their own marine forms, which are an extra attractions for swimmers and snorkellers who come to explore the island’s fantastic offshore reefs. Guadeloupe is a mini-archipelago of wide geographical contrasts. The outlying islands of Marie-Galante, La Desirade and Les Saintes are undeveloped, fill of reminders of their historic importance as sugar plantations. Their tranquil coves are especially valued for their privacy and proximity to breathtaking reefs. Photo by: jendayee
