If you’ve been to Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) there is no need to see any other mountain. Situated in eastern China’s Anhui Province and popular with its breathtaking sweeping landscapes and misty peaks, the Yellow Mountain offers extraordinary scenes and views from what can look like the edge of the world.

Whether you look there are oddly-shaped pine trees and rock formations. Huangshan is actually an entire range of mountains and valleys, jutting rocks, shimmering pools, gurgling water falls and the ephemeral clouds. As an international ecotourism point of interest, UNESCO listed the mountain as an official World Cultural Heritage Site in 1990.

The trees of Mount Huangshan occupy an especially important place in China’s botanical research. Here you will find century-old pines, firs, ginkgoes, actinidia, Chinese torreyas and camphor woods– remnants of the glacial era. The Huangshan Mountain Range also provides a natural habitat for a wide variety of creatures. Among the mountain-dwellers are monkeys, goats, deer, pangolin and squirrels, in addition to an active bird population. The climate there is mild and humid, and the temperature is agreeable during all four seasons.

Getting there: Huangshan is accessible from Shanghai by overnight train, a five-hour bus ride or one hour by air. Expect expensive accommodation and food in the mountains everything is transported up the mountain by man-power: witness tough workers carrying live chickens or flats of coke cans in buckets hanging from wooden beams over their shoulders, and still making it up the mountain faster than you.

It is made up of some 40,000 massive black basalt columns sticking out of the sea. Formed between 50 and 60 million years ago, takes its name from the legends of Finn MacCool. Known to the Irish as the 8th Wonder of the World.

There are 15 miles of footpaths along the Causeway Coastline, owned and maintained by the National Trust. The formation of the Giant’s Causeway was due to intense volcanic activity. Lava welling up through fissures in the chalk bed formed a -lava plateau.

Within the nature reserve, a series of paths run between the visitor centre at Causeway Head and Hamilton’s Seat.
Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven and eight sides, the tallest are about 12 metres.

Sea birds can be seen off the coast around the Causeway, with species such as fulmar, petrel, cormorant, shag, redshank guillemot and razorbill being frequently observed.

Suomenlinna or Viapori (Finnish), or Sveaborg (Swedish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands, today within Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The Sea fortress Suomenlinna is a unique architectural monument, a popular recreation area and museum. Although the island is located off the coast of Helsinki, it is part of the city. The Fortress was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1991!

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress was built over 250 years ago and once had a population of 4600, larger than the population of Helsinki at the time. The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism. All the effort didn’t hinder the Russians taking over in 1808. Finally in 1918 the Fortress became Finnish. Nowadays it is a popular park with museums, interesting flora and beaches.

Today, the island is inhabited by 1000 residents and so you will see some kids biking around. There is a big Visitor Center, which has a 25 minute “multi-vision show” and computers about the fortress.

There are plenty of nice spots for a picnic and you can also swim and sunbathe in various locations on the island – be prepared to walk a bit though. The trip to the fortress in Suomenlinna could be carried out by using the inter-island connecting motor boat from the Port in Katajanokanlaituri.

The Cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century to commemorate a military victory.Victory came on the feast day of the Intercession of the Virgin, so the Tsar chose to name his new church the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat, after the moat that ran beside the Kremlin.

St. Basil’s original construction involved a total of nine pillars or churches, replacing the former wooden churches, situated on a single foundation. A tenth pillar was added (1588) after the death of St. Basil and stands over his burial site.

The inside of St. Basil’s is a maze of narrow, dimly lit corridors connecting the different chapels. Each of the painted domes differs in design and colour.

Named after Aeolus, god of the winds, the Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago not far from Sicily’s northern coast in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Also emerged as the Lipari Islands and Isole Eolie, the principal islands of the chain are Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Stromboli, Panarea and Vulcano. Between them the islands boast beautiful scenery, great beaches, castles, thermal resorts, water sports, good fishing and, of course, some live volcanic activity. Photo by: adam butler photography

These beautiful islands are quite rugged, with deep caverns, extraordinary rock formations, steep cliffs and splendid views. The volcanoes of Stromboli erupt fairly frequently. Rossellini’s 1950 film, Stromboli, was inspired by this volcano, which still regularly sends molten lava down its scarred rocks. This however, hasn’t prevented these islands from becoming popular smart resorts for well-headed Italians, so expect crowds in summer. Photo by: adam butler photography

Lapri is perhaps the most fascinating of the islands from the historical point of view, with its citadel and archeological remains. It is from there, the most of the boat trips to the beaches and other islands start out. Buoyant pumice and smooth black obsidian litter the beaches, and Lapri is well-served by restaurants and cafes. Filicudi with its basalt shoreline, is much less developed as a tourist resort – the water is magnificently clear, you can hire a boat or scuba dive, and the beaches are often empty. Photo by: afewscoops

Panarea offers a lovely scene of rocky hills, ancient settlements, green slopes and pretty buildings characterized by columns and arches. There can be found the Hotel Raya, opened in the 1960s by artist Paolo Tilche, which has given Panarea the reputation as a party island. Photo by: adam butler photography

The garden islands of Salina offers tranquility, perfect if you are looking for a hideaway. It is one of the greenest of the islands, producing capers, delicious fish and octopus and a golden dessert wine, Malvasia. It was there, that the film Il Postino was shot in the 1990s. There is a museum in Lingua, an interesting church in the post town of Santa Marina and spectacular rock formations at Pollara. The stone beaches are clean and rarely crowded, and the views over other islands are breathtaking. Stomboli has become island of choice for a select fashionable crowd. The Volcano is still main attraction, and is best viewed from an evening boat trip from where you can see the fiery show. Volcano’s other great attraction is the open air pool of volcanic mud, which attract bathers looking for a cure for skin complaints and other ailments. Photo by: adam butler photography

When to go: May, June or September. Population: 13,431. How to get there: By boat, ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo, Palermo or Naples. You should know: The archipelago is UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its geology and vulcanology. Photo by: Ithip.com Hotel Collection

‘Macca‘ rests at the ends of the earth. The remote wilderness is tucked away in the southeast corner of the Pacific, halfway between Australia and Antractida. A tiny fragment of land, it is of huge significance on a world scale, yet was only discovered by accident by Frederick Hasselbrorough in 1810 while he was looking around for new sealing grounds. Photo by: ailsa45

Under Tasmania’s wing, the only human inhabitants on this extraordinary wildlife sanctuary are from the Australian Antarctic Division, based on the north of the island. Over the centuries scientist have been endlessly drawn to this unsung wonder of the natural world. Each spring, around 3.5 million seabirds, mostly penguins, and 80,000 elephant seals pull themselves up on to the rocky shoreline to breed. There are pinguins galore – rockhoppers, kings, royals and gentooes. Rabbits are a less welcome sight and are literally eating away at this World Heritage Site. Photo by: cmg099

You have to work extremely hard to get to this island, but the rewards for true lovers of wildlife and wilderness are unparalleled. It’s cold inhospitable place at the best of times, but you don’t go there for the weather. Photo by: ailsa45

The great watery abyss of Lake Baikal is a huge rift valley in the heart of Siberia formed some 25 million years ago. It is both the oldest and the deepest lake in the world, containing around 20 per cent of the planet’s fresh surface water. Olkhon, one of the largest lake islands in the world, is the geographical, historical and spiritual heart of Baikal, divided by a treacherous narrow strait, near the lake’s deepest point of 1, 637m. Photo by: Gunnar Geir Pétursson

There are plentiful traces of human habitation on Olkhon from as long as 13, 000 years ago; 143 archeological sites have been discovered – rock paintings, burial mounds, settlements, defensive walls and sacred places. The island is steeped in native myth and legend. Photo by: Oh mon héros [Aka Suleiman Poher]

This beautiful island is 730 sq km in area and 72 km long, a wild prehistoric landscape of taiga, steppe, salt lakes and sand dunes, formed by the earth’s shifting tectonic plates. There is one proper village, Kuzhir, and a single main road run the length of the island. The rocky cliffs along the western shore enclose deep bays with sandy beaches, where you can camp in a yurt and go kayaking and fishing. You really are in the wilderness here, there are no power and telephone lines, no cell-phone receptions, and the only electricity is from domestic generators. Photo by: Oh mon héros [Aka Suleiman Poher]

It lies between the Gnadensee and the Untersee, almost due west of the city of Konstanz. The highest elevation on the island, the Hochwart, reaches 438.7 meters, or 43 meters above the lake surface. Today, these preserved areas are protecting species of plants and animals, which are typical for the region around Lake Constance.

In 724, the itinerant bishop Pirmin founded the monastery on the uninhabited island of Reichenau at Lake Constance. It’s becoming an important center of art and culture of the Middle Ages. During the “Golden Age” of Reichenau Island, numerous relics were collected.

The churches of St Mary and Marcus, St Peter and St Paul, and St George, mainly built between the 9th and 11th centuries. The famous artworks of Reichenau include the Ottonian Renaissance murals of miracles of Christ in St Georg, unique survivals from the 10th century.

Krakow is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and has a history going back over a thousand years. In the area of the Old Town there are several hundred historical monuments of Mediaeval, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Krakow was entered in 1978 on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. The cobblestoned streets, majestic churches (almost 100 historical churches!), and old charm make Krakow an unforgetable destination.

Picturesquely set overlooking the Vistula River, the wealth of the city attracted many famous artists whose masterpieces have survived until the present. The beautiful preserved old medieval city is reason enough to travel to Krakow, particularly the main market square, festooned with churches, restaurants and bars, where the soul of the city is bared.

The Royal Castle has rich collections of old masters’ pieces, period furniture and fabrics, Europe’s biggest collection of tapestries, regalia, an armoury, and decorative art pieces. The coronation cathedral adjoining the castle is the treasury of national mementoes and splendid works of art. Inside are the tombstones of Polish monarchs.
