arenal volcano
Costa Rica’s Arenal National Park has the most active volcano in the country. It was believed to be dormant until a major eruption in 1968. The park is next to the country’s largest hydroelectric project, the Arenal Lake Dam. The most characteristic feature of this national park is the impressive and majestic Arenal Volcano, an almost perfect active cone 1,633 meters high, whose regular eruptions offer one of the most extraordinary and awe inspiring natural sights in Costa Rica.

The most magnificent Opera House in the world

Published by in Arts, Australia, Australia, Monuments, Relaxing, Sightseeings, Urban Tourism, Walking

opera house
The Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. In addition to representing Sydney, the opera house has also become a symbol for the country of Australia throughout the world. Resting majestically on Bennelong Point as it reaches into Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House is truly an unforgettable sight. The original plan to build the opera house was put forth in 1950, and designed by John Utzon. Interestingly enough, his vision was more advanced than architectural and engineering abilities of the decade, and it wasn’t until 1973 that his ideas were finally put into place.

The event usually kicks off on the Monday evening with a welcome party at Nanny Cay Marina where registration for the Sailing Festival takes place. Three days of destination cruising and racing follows before the main three-day regatta properly gets underway on the Friday. The first BVI Spring Regatta took place in 1972 and remains an integral part of island life.

Queen’s Day

April 30th is the celebration all (almost all) Dutch people wait for all year long. Akin to the American Fourth of July this day takes on special patriotic meaning. The 30th celebrates teh birth of the former Queen, Queen Julianna and has become the largest national holiday in Holland. The House of “Oranje” the longest ruling family in Holland has of course inspired the Dutch color of bright orange to symbolize all of Holland. Amsterdam a city normally inhabited by 750,000 people heralds over 3.2 MILLION on Queens day and it is probably one of the biggest parties anyone has ever seen. I found myself on a house boat on the Prinsesgracht (Princes Canal) for the celebration. Watching the boats and people floating by in an adult version of the “Lazy River” from my child hood. Much beer, food and jubilation was had by all!

Have you gone to Perlan ?

Published by in Eating, Europe, Iceland, Monuments, Shopping, Travel Stories, Travel Tips, Urban Tourism

perlan
Perlan (The Pearl) is a landmark building in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. It is 25.7 m high and attracts on average 20,000 visitors every year. It was originally designed by Ingimundur Sveinsson. Perlan is situated on the hill where there had been hot water storage tanks for decades. In 1991 the tanks were updated and a hemispherical structure placed on top. This project was largely done at the behest of Davio Oddsson, during his time as mayor of Reykjavik. The Pearl is a remarkable building, built in 1988, unique in Iceland and probably in the whole world. On Oskjuhlid hill, a top the huge tanks in which natural hot water is stored for heating the city, a glass dome has been constructed: under the dome is a rotating restaurant serving fine cuisine.
