<p><em><strong>Cocos Islands</strong></em> are discovered in 1609, they were settled and owned by a single family from 1872 until the Australian Government acquired them in 1978. A pristine white beach is so typical of the beautiful <em>Cocos Islands</em>. The 27 coral islands are formed into two large, heavily vegetated atolls. They are the only atolls that Darwin ever visited but the coral ecosystem remains intact &#8211; and you can still see in their pristine conditions, exactly why they played such an important part in his theory of evolution.<span id="more-14694"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14695 aligncenter" title="cocos islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/cocos-islands1.jpg" alt="cocos islands" width="540" height="406" /></p>
<p><em>North Keeling</em>, set apart from the other islands, isn&#8217;t even inhabited, but you can come across extreme rarities like the <em>Cocos </em>buff-banded rail, robber land crabs, and both green and hawksbill turtles among other wonders, under its protection as <em>Pulu Keeling National Park</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14698 aligncenter" title="cocos islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/cocos-islands4.jpg" alt="cocos islands" width="373" height="498" /></p>
<p>The Cocos islanders live on Home and West Islands, both given over to copra and coconut plantations that only add to their tropical glamour. There is no tourist industry at all. Wild place populated with divers and kite-surfers. However there are facilities for visitors, sponsored by the islanders who take in personal interest everyone who come. If you happen to be there, you are welcome to participate in the school fete, sports day or concert night. The tradition of hospitality is both, <a title="Australia" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/continets/Australia"><em><strong>Australian </strong></em></a>and <em>Malay</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14697 aligncenter" title="cocos islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/cocos-islands3.jpg" alt="cocos islands" width="540" height="400" /></p>
<p>The islanders, as much as the islands themselves, have retained a form of unpolluted innocence, and share a mutual respect that visitors immediately respond to. These islands are a dreamscape worthy to travel for.<br />
<em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> Year-round. The winds last from April to September. But between that period the islands is second home for professional kite maniacs. Rain is most intense between March and July and usually falls in the evening after long sunny day. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> 446. <em><strong>Getting there:</strong></em> By air, from Perth, to West Island, Cocos Islands. Photos by: <strong><a title="Link to Christian Bartens' photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cbartens/"><strong>Christian Bartens</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>In the <a title="Pacific Ocean" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Pacific+Ocean"><em><strong>Pacific Ocean</strong></em></a>, in <em>British Columbia</em>, the <em><strong>Queen Charlotte Islands</strong></em> are peaks of a submerged mountain chain. The seven largest islands of the 1,884 islands and islets in the archipelago are <em>Langara</em>, <em>Graham</em>, <em>Moresby</em>, <em>Louise</em>, <em>Lyell</em>, <em>Burnaby</em> and <em>Kunghit</em>. Just 2 km into the sea, the continental shelf falls away dramatically to the immense depths of the ocean, and this is <a title="Canada" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/countries/Canada"><em><strong>Canada</strong></em></a>&#8217;s most active earthquake area. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to marc_guitard's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/marc_guitard/"><strong>marc_guitard</strong></a> <span id="more-14686"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14688 aligncenter" title="queen charlotte islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/queen-charlotte-islands2.jpg" alt="queen charlotte islands" width="540" height="405" /></p>
<p><em>Naikoon Provincial Park</em>, in the north-east of <em>Graham Island</em>, covers a range of diverse environments including sandy beaches and dunes, sphagnum bogs, ancient forests and rivers. The landscape was formed during the last <em>Ice Age</em> out of the deposits left by retreating glaciers. The main attraction here are the endless stretches of broad sandy beaches. On the north beach is <em>Tow Hill</em>, a 100 m outcrop of basalt columns which make a dramatic landmark. Also worth seeing is <em>Rose Spit</em>, an ecological reserve, where you can spot migrating birds travelling over the Pacific. <em><strong>Photo by:</strong></em><strong><a title="Link to g d gustafsson's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ggustafs/"><strong> g d gustafsson</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>The <em>Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve</em> and <em>Haida Heritage Site</em> is in the south of the archipelago. The wilderness area of 138 islands stretching 90 km from north to south is only accessible by boat or charted aircraft. Mountains rise steeply to the west, and the coastline is dotted with stunning inlets, coves, bays and islands. This is great place to observe whales, bald eagles, nesting seabirds, black bears, river otters and sea lions. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to Sam Beebe / Ecotrust's photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sbeebe/"><strong>Sam Beebe / Ecotrust</strong></a></p>

<p>Rainforest and upland bog, salmon steams, estuaries and kelp beds sustain a rich diversity of life there.<br />
<em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> April to November. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> 4,935. <em><strong>Getting there:</strong></em> Fly to Vancouver or Prince Rupert to Sandspit, or take a ferry from Prince Rupert. <em><strong>You should know:</strong></em> This is a tranquil area with little development, so do not expect busy resort hotels with all the tourist comforts. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to Yonn Yeth-Lachance's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeisgreatjourney/"><strong>Yonn Yeth-Lachance</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>Lying in the <em>Gulf of Guinea</em>, <em><strong>Bioko</strong></em> is a mountainous volcanic island still populated by Bubi people, who speak a Bantu language brought over from mainland <a title="Africa" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/continents/Africa"><em><strong>Africa</strong></em></a>. Set in tropical rainforest, this boot-shaped island is 70 km long and 32 km off the coast of <em>Cameroon</em>. <em><strong>Bioko</strong></em> has more species of rare monkeys than any other place in Africa; of seven species living on the island, four are among the continent most en dangerous island. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to John &amp; Mel Kots' photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/melanieandjohn/"><strong>John &amp; Mel Kots</strong></a></p>

<p>The Bubi clans still account for most of the human population, but given Bioko&#8217;s colourful past this is now mixed with Spaniards, Fernandinos and immigrants from Rio Muni, Nigeria and Cameroon. In colonial times it was known as <em><strong>Fernando Po</strong></em>, and under the Africanization policy of dictator Masie Nguema Biyogo, it was renamed Masie Ngueme Biyogo Island. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to ianmichaelthomas' photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7533960@N02/"><strong>ianmichaelthomas</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>The capital city of Bioko is <em><strong>Malabo</strong></em>, which sits at the northern end of the island on the rim of a sunken volcano. Despite being a capital of <a href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/countries/Equatorial+Guinea"><em><strong>Equatorial Guinea</strong></em></a>, this is a pretty poorly developed place with limited paved roads. There are few tourist attractions, but on the densly forest slopes a new world awaits. <em><strong>Photo by:</strong></em><a title="Link to John &amp; Mel Kots' photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/melanieandjohn/"><strong> John &amp; Mel Kots</strong></a></p>

<p>In parts of this island, it seems that time has stood still for a thousand of years &#8211; many villagers still wear traditional costumes, follow the customs of their ancestors and shun all the trappings of modern life.<em><strong> Tanna</strong></em> is a small but interesting island in <a title="Vanuatu" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/countries/Vanuatu"><em><strong>Vanuatu</strong></em></a>. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to Tony_Rush's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/tony_a_rush/"><strong>Tony_Rush</strong></a><span id="more-14408"></span></p>

<p>Captain Cook was the first European to arrive in 1774, attracted by a glowing volcano in the night. Cook was followed by traders and missionaries, but the latter had little success in weaning the islanders off their old beliefs. Even today outsiders are only welcome in rural villages if traveling with a local guide. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to canvas of light's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/canvas_of_light/"><strong>canvas of light</strong></a></p>

<p><em><strong>Tanna Island</strong></em> is trying to encourage tourism to supplement the traditional farming and fishing activities. There are a limited number of low-key resorts and bungalow accommodation on the west and east coasts, with wild trekking a majoractivity in the south around the island&#8217;s highest mountain. Tourists can approach the world&#8217;s most accessible active volcano. It is near Sulphur Bay and one-day volcano tours are the most common tourist activity. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to volcanodiscovery's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/volcanoes/"><strong>volcanodiscovery</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>Tanna also has beautiful white beaches and tropical vegetation of many Pacific islands, but retains an atmosphere that will delight the traveler who dislikes wholesale modern development. There are still places in the world, that still allow adventurous travelers to feel that they&#8217;re discovered the idyllic back of beyond. <em><strong>Photo by:</strong></em> <a title="Link to jo-jo-jo's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74172221@N00/"><strong>jo-jo-jo</strong></a></p>

<p>&#8216;<em><strong>Macca</strong></em>&#8216; rests at the ends of the earth. The remote wilderness is tucked away in the southeast corner of the<a title="Pacific" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Pacific"><em><strong> Pacific</strong></em></a>, halfway between <a title="Australia" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/continents/Australia/"><em><strong>Australia</strong></em></a> and <em><strong>Antractida</strong></em>. A tiny fragment of land, it is of huge significance on a world scale, yet was only discovered by accident by Frederick Hasselbrorough in 1810 while he was looking around for new sealing grounds. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to ailsa45's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/11880210@N05/"><strong>ailsa45<span id="more-14034"></span></strong></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14035 aligncenter" title="macquarie island" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/macquarie-island1.jpg" alt="macquarie island" width="540" height="405" /></p>
<p>Under <em><strong>Tasmania</strong></em>&#8217;s wing, the only human inhabitants on this extraordinary wildlife sanctuary are from the <em><strong>Australian Antarctic Division</strong></em>, based on the north of the island. Over the centuries scientist have been endlessly drawn to this unsung wonder of the natural world. Each spring, around 3.5 million seabirds, mostly penguins, and 80,000 elephant seals pull themselves up on to the rocky shoreline to breed. There are pinguins galore &#8211; rockhoppers, kings, royals and gentooes. Rabbits are a less welcome sight and are literally eating away at this <a href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/World+Heritage+Site"><em><strong>World Heritage Site</strong></em></a>. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to cmg099's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cmg099/"><strong>cmg099</strong></a></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14037 aligncenter" title="macquarie island" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/macquarie-island3.jpg" alt="macquarie island" width="540" height="346" /></p>
<p>You have to work extremely hard to get to this island, but the rewards for true lovers of wildlife and wilderness are unparalleled. It&#8217;s cold inhospitable place at the best of times, but you don&#8217;t go there for the weather. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to ailsa45's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/11880210@N05/"><strong>ailsa45</strong></a></strong></p>

<p><em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> In the breeding season &#8211; over the summer months and early autumn. Even then the weather can be challenging. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> Uninhabited ( expect 20 &#8211; 40 members of the Australian Antarctic Division who are based here every year). <em><strong>How to get there:</strong></em> Very unlimited access. Most visitors spending up to two days on the island and tourist boats. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to esjohnson's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/samueljohnson/"><strong>esjohnson</strong></a></p>
