The improbable celebration – Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a perhaps the most elaborate, colorful, and important holiday in China. Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday celebrated among Chinese people – Koreans, Vietnamese, Mongolians, The Philippines, Thailands. Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. In China, people may take weeks of holiday from work to prepare for and celebrate the New Year. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. New Year’s Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. Chinese New Year was on 18th February 2007. It will be the Year of the Pig. If you were born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995 – you were born under the sign of the pig. The Chinese believe a child born this year in The Year of the Golden Pig will be blessed with a carefree, wealthy and loving life!

Notting Hill carnival

This great festival began initially from the energies of Black immigrants from the Caribbean, where the Carnival tradition is very strong. People living locally who dreamed of creating a festival to bring together the people of Notting Hill, most of whom as immigrants, were facing racism, lack of working opportunities, poor housing conditions resulting in a general suppression of good self-esteem. Colourful costumed dancers strut their stuff in time to their own floats beat. Swaying onlookers crowd ten and fifteen deep, whistles blowing and dancing in the streets.

Surfing capital of the world
Any sunny day on the coast of Australia you can see hundreds of young people going to the beach. They all share Australia’s national passion-surfing. These soul surfers, as they are often called, practice the sport purely for personal enjoyment and many even find a deeper meaning through involving themselves directly with naturally occurring wave pattern. “My friends and I usually go down to the beach before breakfast in the summer”, says 18-years-old Jerry, “and come home again for dinner”. At weekends it is quite normal to drive hundreds of kilometres to find that “perfect wave”. But in Sidney, the biggest city in Australia, you don’t have that problem-there are thirty-four beaches close to the city centre!
