Colonia del Sacramento, in Uruguay is a way back in the past. For years it operated as a contraband port, evading the strictures imposed on trade by the Spanish crown. Today it is a resort city, a port, and the trade center for a rich agricultural region. The whole place has old houses and cobblestoned streets with historic portion of Colonia, reminiscent of old Lisbon. Winding streets and colorful houses are laid out in a pattern different from Spanish colonial cities, and a delight to explore.

Many travelers stop to enjoy the excellent restaurants, art and craft shops, museums and a large yacht harbor. A trip across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento is simple, and there is really only one sensible option. You can choose a fast or a slow ferry to get there, and there are usually special offers.

The small city of Colonia only really takes a single day of exploration, so try to book an early morning crossing going, and a late afternoon crossing coming back to Buenos Aires. The historical sights in Colonia de Sacramento are the Calle de los Suspiros, a beautiful little cobblestone street lined with colorful houses and Colonia’s trademark yellow lamps and the historical city gate and walls. There are a plenty of museums exhibit more of colonial life, with replicas of pottery, clothing, maps and more.

When to go: Uruguay has a pleasant climate which makes the Colonia worth to visit at any time of the year, however high season during the summer months may make reservations harder to get. Getting there: By air, landing on the Aeropuerto Internacional de Colonia Laguna de los Patos, just 6 km from the city center. By land from Buenos Aires, by bridges Puentes Zarate-Brazo Largo and Internacional Libertador General San Martin. Or by water from Buenos Aires, the choice of the Buquebus or Ferry bus.

The estate has just vast 12 suites, all individually designed by different Uruguayan artist. The public spaces showcase a massive white marble sculpture by world renowned sculptor Pablo Atchugarry, standing 3.5 meter or 12 feet tall. The creation rises to meet the 300 sq m ceiling and frieze painted by Clever Lara, another leading Uruguayan contemporary artist. This work is a “satellitescape” view of Jose Ignacio and Uruguay, inspired by Google Earth.

The activities include: horse riding, bicycles, surfing, canoeing and golf. The guests can also take polo lessons and go on nature walks.
Cabo Polonio is the hippie ideal! Spanning miles of the rugged coastline for which Uruguay is justly renowned, this protected nature sanctuary is one of the best-kept secrets in South America: a heaven for locals looking for unspoiled beauty and tranquility amid sea lions colonies and rolling sand dunes. Photos by: afarinasso

There are two hotels in the immediate vicinity of the region, furthermore most visitors sleep in the rustic beach posadas (lodges) or rainbow-colored shacks dotting the grassy knolls behind the dunes. There are no cars there (there is also no electricity for that matter), other than the odd four-by-four shepherding visitors between the dunes.

It is the town that time forgot, where the most notable citizens are the sea lions from the colony lying some 30 m into the sea, presided over by the lighthouse guarding the bay.

Gentle breezes envelop as cares are washed away with the sound of the lapping ocean, hampers are unpacked on the white sand and friendships are forged over campfires. This is the ultimate camp-beached site protected by man and gifted by nature. Being in Cabo Polonio was like being a galaxy far, far away!

Uruguay is a country located in southeastern part of South America. The word Uruguay comes from the Guarani language, meaning ”river where the birds live”. The inhabitants of Uruguay before the colonization were various tribes of hunter, best known as the Charrua Indians. The country has impressive literacy traditions. Tango, candombe and murga are the three main styles of music there.
