There are so many perfect islands in the Aegean – more than 3,000 of them – that i can be hard to distinguish between them. But Bozcaada really is different – it is one of the only two islands in the region that is Turkish. In Greek mythology it was called Tenedos and because of its strategic position, just south of the Dardanelles Strait, it has been occupied since time immemorial. Over the centuries the population was ethnically Greek, these days, although it is almost entirely Turkish, the island’s culture bears many traces of its Greek inheritance. Photo by: m.f.t.

Bozcaada is roughly triangular shape and has relatively flat terrain. From the highest point Goztepe at 192 m, there is a panoramic view across the whole island and on clear day you can see as far as Levkos. About third of the land is covered in vineyards, scattered trees and scrubland containing an usually diverse range of plants – 437 species in all. Photo by: esin’s gaze

The sea is remarkably clear and seaweed-free, so Bozcaada’s waters are superb for diving. There are plenty of pure sand beaches; Ayazama Bay is the longest, the most accessible stretch. There are as well as innumerable coves and inlets for anyone seeking solitude. Photo by: Zeynep ©

There is an intensive Venetian Fortress that attests to Bozcaada. The stone and wood town architecture is a charming mixture of Turkish and Greek houses – stylistically quite different from each other. The food, too, is a fusion between both cultures, giving it a district edge over the usual fare of the Aegean Islands. Red poppy syrup, a local specialty, is an interesting alternative to the island wine. Photo by: Egemen VII

When to go: May to September. Population: 2,427. Getting there: Bus from Istanbul, an 8-hour journey to Geyikii. You should know: The sea is substantially colder there, due to the cold water springs around Bozcaada. During the hottest months it is a refreshing contrast to the beach. Photo by: Zeynep ©

In one of the most attractive spots on Turkey‘s Turquoise Coast is the lovely Mediterranean island of Kekova, As just 4.5 sq km, the island is uninhabited but lies in a bay close to the mainland. On the north shore of the island are ruins of ancient Apollonia, dating back to the 5th century BC. The reason these ruins attract so many tourists is that they lie partially beneath the waves, an amazing sunken city in the clear blue waters of the bay. Photo by: JMcD&SW

The city was submerged by a series of earthquakes over the centuries. Today marble columns and arches rise into the water, and stone steeps lead down into the ocean floor. You can explore the sunken ruins by kayak, or take a ferry trip to view them, as swimming is no longer allowed there. But west on the shore of the Bay of Tersane, swimming is permitted and this is an evocative and lovely place for a picnic. Photo by: Hendo101

Apollonia was part of Lycia, an important kingdom in this region. The Lycains traded with Ancient greeks and as trade increased, so did piracy. For that reason, many harbours and port, featuring Kekova, were fortified. While you glide over the blue water, you can spot remains of buildings and wall beneath you boat, a rather unsettling experience.! Photo by: mebooyou

On the mainland, near Kekova are some more fascinating ruins, those of ancient Simena, dating back to the 4th century BC. Today the fishing village of Kale stands on the site. A medieval castle sits atop the little hill and from there you can get a good view of the ruins. The ruined fortress, Simena Castle, features the pointed arches of the Lycian. Photo by: Infinitaintringulis

When to go: April to November. Population: Uninhabited. How to get there: By boat from Kas or Kaikan. You should know: Due to visitors taking home souvenirs from the ruins, it is no longer permitted to swim among the ruins of Apollonia. However, there are other ruins close by which can be explored from the water. Photo by: Lvovsky

Lake Van is a salt lake – a mysterious inland sea 1,670 m above the sea level in the heart of Anatolian Mountains, Turkey. Nobody can explain the salinity of the water, either the fresh water spring on the island of Akdamar. On this cosy small island, less than 1 sq km in area, there is an incredible monument – the Cathedral Church of the Holly Cross, an extraordinary beautiful example of American architecture. Photo by: photoalidager

The church was built in the 10th century and was the seat of American Catholicos for nearly 700 years. It is the only remaining structure of the Palace of Aght’Amar, built for the American king between 915 and 922 – a magnificent complex of buildings, complete with streets and gardens, entirely built out of a lovely pinkish-red tufa (volcanic rock) which must have been transported from miles away. The church contains 34 rooms, and is set in almond grove. Its exterior walls are carved with fine reliefs of biblical harvesting – nothing remotely comparable has been found anywhere else in the world. Photo by: mattjfleet

The beauty of the scenery around is breathtaking. Reddish stone contrast with blue water against the backdrop of the snow capped Anatolian Mountains towering over the lake. Of all the island in Lake Van, Akdamar becomes green earliest in the spring and when the almond trees come into blossom the island is a truly sublime experience. There is a wonderful swimming spot, where you can plunge off the rocks into the deep salty water of the lake. Photo by: ©haddock

When to go: March to April, to catch the almond blossom. Population: May be a museum keeper. Getting there: Fly/train/bus from Ankara to Van. From Van by road to Gevas 45 km to the southwest. Boats leave from Gevas and take about 20 minutes to get to Akdamar. Photo by: ©haddock

Mardin is an ancient town located about 40 km from the Syrian border. According to a hearsay, the history of the city dates as far back as the Flood, before the spread of Islam. Built of sandstone, famed for its Arab-style architecture, the town has preserved its flat-roofed old-style richly decorated traditional stone houses. They reflecting all features of a closed-in life style are surrounded by 4 meters high walls and isolated from the street.

Mardin has a number of interesting old buildings, including the medieval Sultan Isa Medresesi, Kasim Pasha Medresesi, the Ulu Cami and a rambling bazaar. The Ulu Cami or “Grand Mosque” and the Sultan Isa Medresesi, dating from 1385, are among the most interesting Turkish monuments. Other major attraction is the Saffron Monastery. This was a holy place even in pre-Christian times. The monastery has been here since 495 AD. Some of its existing floor mosaics are 1500 years old.

Several km east of Mardin there is another Monastery, Deyrelmur dating from the 5th- century. If you would like to see the best examples of Artutid architecture then you have to head for Kiziltepe and 21 km south of Mardin. The 15th- century Zeynel Bey Mausoleum nearby, is attractively decorated with blue tiles.
