This majestic 140m water fountain

Published by in Europe, Switzerland, Urban Tourism

water fountain geneva
Its predecessor dated from 1886, when the new hydraulic turbines on the Rhone built up excessive water pressure after the city’s craftsmen had closed the valves in their workshops and gone home. An engineer created a temporary outlet which spurted a 30m fountain to release the pressure while a reservoir system was developed, but by the time the fountain became unnecessary a few wily Genevois had caught on to its power as a tourist attraction. Then purely decorative, it was moved from the river to an exposed lakeside location, and furnished with more and more powerful pumps. It’s a big fountain that shoots straight out of the lake… it was built for a world fair there. You can see it from all around the lake, and they shine lights on it at night. The lake is beautiful to watch a sunset on, and the Swiss Alps surround it. Also, there is a statue of a “naked man and a horse”. Eight 9,000-watt projectors light the fountain’s majestic column in the evening as it soars skywards.

It changes every year to accommodate the seasonal colours and requires around 6500 flowers, trimmed to the millimetre by horticultural specialists. Formerly only decorative with its sole dial comprising over 6,500 flowers, the new millennium provided it with decisive artistic dimensions thanks to the ingenuity of the gardeners of the Service of Green Spaces and the Environment.

Vitra

Vitra, the furniture company, have turned to a variety of major architects to design the buildings making up their manufacturing site near Basel, close to the German/Swiss/French border. As well as Frank Gehry, Alvaro Siza, Nicholas Grimshaw, Tadao Ando and Zaha Hadid are all represented, in a cross between an industrial plant and a model village. In the late 1980s, a palpable shift in Gehry’s aesthetic occurred with his first European commission: the design of two buildings for the manufacturing center of the Vitra furniture company. Gehry was asked to create a unified plan for a factory building that would sit adjacent to Nicholas Grimshaw’s 1981 factory, as well as a small museum to house company CEO Rolf Fehlbaum’s collection of approximately two hundred Modern and contemporary chairs.
