One of the oldest cities in Poland, the medieval town is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1997 the history center of the city was designated a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and the Old Town was added to the list of Seven Wonders of Poland.

Archaeologists have discovered that the first settlers in the area were over 1100 BC. In 1230 Teutonic Knights built a castle on the site. In 1263, Franciscan monks settled in the city, and after them, and Dominicans. As you can see, the town is very attractive. Torun has the largest number of preserved Gothic houses in Poland. The most interesting monuments are: The Cathedral of SS. John the Evangelist and John the Baptist, The Old Town Hall, begun in 1274, City fortifications, begun in the 13th century, Ruins of 13th-century Teutonic Knights’ castle, and many more.

If you are in or near Podgorze, Poland and looking for a nice, relaxing green spot, Bednarski Park could be a good option. With its split level nature, the place is well balanced in terms of what it can offer. In some place the park feels more like a little forest, with virgin, pathless swathes of green. There are quite a few large, green, even surfaced patches, allowing for sports or all sorts of team games and picnic options.

The location of the park is really aesthetic, it is located on a hill (240 metres above the ground) around a quarry, dating from the Middle Ages. As a result, if you climb up the edge of the quarry, you will get to see some panoramic views of Krakow. The best way to get to the park is up the wide stairs, from the square at Korona tram stop at the end of Krakowska street, or from behind St Joseph’s Church, at the head of Rynek Podgorski.

The park was designed early in the 20th century together with villa-type development in the style of picturesque historicism, Art Nouveau, and modernism. It was there, in the Wis?ocki’s villa, that a plot inspired by Lt Antoni Stawarz resulted in the bloodless takeover of the city from Austrians on 30th October 1918 after more than 100 years of occupation.

The Lotnictwa Museum in Krakow is one of the largest museums of avaiation in the world. It is located in historically preserved buildings and hangars of the former historic airfield of Rakowice-Cyzyny, the first airfield on polish terrain, build in 1912 for the air fleet no. 7 of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

Take into account the idea of flying, the spirit of the place, the structure of the historic airfield – the new building for the Museum of Aviation takes up these references intellectually and synthesises them into an expressive and emblematic structure.

A large structure has arisen with triangular wings made of concrete and yet as light as a wind-vane or propeller. Size and orientation of the wings got developed out of three different functions with 4500sqm usable area on three floors is for disposition now. Intertwining spaces provide good orientation for the visitor.

When you enter the building you will stumble upon the education wing with a voluminous 3D-cinema or directly into the exhibition area with the planes. The wings are generously glazed, opening in all directions. The exhibition thus links visually with the landscape around it and offers a view of the apron and the planes on display outdoors.

The offices for administration are in the second floor offering views towards the park, into the exhibition or through bull’s eye windows onto the former airfield. The new museum for aviation appears not as a “house” – it yields a subtle functionally expressive architectural sculpture. Location: Krakow, Poland.

The National Museum in Krakow was originally founded as a municipal institution so as to shun control by the occupant’s government in Vienna. At the moment it employs 644 people, including 257 in curatorial areas and a relatively big internal security forces of 112 armed officers who provide safeguarding services in all the buildings. The museum promotes world and Polish art, as well asvscientific, historical and artistic merit, which were produced out of beliefs of those who shared a sense of belonging to or respect for Polish culture, regardless of their place of residence, nationality or religion.

The collections of the National Museum outnumber 780,000 objects. Of these over 300,000 belong to the collection of the Princes Czartoryski Museum and Library which is managed by the National Museum in Krakow. There are artifacts from every period of history. The Museum also possesses a separate collection of ancient art, contemporary artists, and collections of medieval and modern art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The main collection is Polish art like painting, sculpture, drawing, decorative art and numerous western European works, a collection of religious art related to the Orthodox Church, and an extremely valuable collection of oriental art, mainly from Japan. Besides works of art the Museum also collects library collections featuring numismatics and historical photographs. Extremely fascinating part is the Studio of the Iconography of Krakow with its collection of historical views and photographs of the city.

In recent years most of the sculpture exhibitions are accompanied by “Music of the Stones”, performed on a rare lithophone, especially brought for this purpose to Krakow from Zurich. The music itself consists in part from of elements of reinterpreted Renaissance and Baroque music, and in part from the natural sounds of the slates and pebbles, whose use comes from the search for the “primeval tones” of the stones, which make up the exposition.

Guided tours and educational activities are available upon prior reservation at least one week in advance. Photographing and filming are allowed provided it uses no additional lighting or tripod. Wireless web access is available in the Main Building of the Museum. There is also some museum cafes: Cafe Wa?ka at Jozef Mehoffer’s House, Cafe Pod Kasztanowcem at the Szo?ayski House, TriBeCa Museum at the Main Buiding.

Authentic was at the turn of the past millennium when the rulers of Poland took maturing their residence here. During the premier 16th century King Sigismund I the Old (1506-1548) brought domination the best native and foreign artists (Italian architects and sculptors, German decorators, etc.) to inaugurate the foxy Renaissance palace-cum-castle which survived, little changed, till because.

The most valuable historical buildings and museums can be found in the Old Town and its environs. The most famous is Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) – a historic and spiritual centre of the city. Here Wroclaw began its 1000 years old life and here the first city and cathedral were built.

Numerous international musical and theatre events attract innumerable visitors from all over Poland. The international festival “Vratislavia Cantans” is the biggest one among them. “Jazz by the Odra River” Festival, Days of the Music of Old Masters, Wroclaw Meetings of One-Actor Theatres and Small Theatrical Forms, or International Theatre Festival “Dialog” Wroclaw are also worth noting.

The rich architecture and significant historical importance of the Poznan city are good reason to fun trip for people from all walks of life. Poznan is the second main centre of the first Polish state that emerged here in the Middle Ages. With a strategic position on the Berlin – Moscow train line, one of the most beautiful cities north of the Alps – Poznan will be for many their first experience of Poland. It has a stunning central square, thriving night-life, fascinating museums and many attractions in the surrounding area.

The most popular starting point for exploring the city is Renaissance Town Hall. Must-see attractions include Stary Rynek (the old square), Mickiewicz Square, the Zamek, Franciscan Church, the Cathedral Island and the stern Prussian castle. Explore sights such as the King’s Castle with its impressive Museum of Applied Arts and the Emperor’s District, a regal complex of buildings centred around the charming Rose Courtyard. The most notable events of the Poznan year are the International Trade Fairs, held since 1925 and comprising over 40 specialised exhibitions.

Landscape artists flock to Kazimierz Dolny because it is thought to be blessed with an effervescent light. The appeal of the tiny, sleepy town has not been lost on film directors, either who have often used its atmospheric streets as a setting for romances and historical thrillers. Sitting proudly on the banks of the Vistula River, Kazimiers Dolny in eastern Poland is flush with cobbled streets lined with historical buildings. A laid-back retreat for stressed-out city dwellers who swarm there during the summer months from the nearby cities of Warsaw and Lublin. Photo by: ben.tastic

The town was founded in the fourteenth-century by the much-loved King Kazimierz the Great as a community for the Jewish population, and he built a castle there as his summer residence. The gothic castle was destroyed by the Swedes in 1650s, but its ruins are still open to the public today and offer stunning views of the city and the River Vistula from its hilltop vantage point. Photo by: ben.tastic

Rynek, the market square, is the prettiest part of town, with a well marking its center. It is there, where you will find several opulent houses, dating back to 1615. All town houses have roofs covered with wooden tiles, and in the balmy summer heat there is a pleasant smell of pine in the air. Photo by: ben.tastic

In 1309, the Grand Master Sigfried von Feuchtwangen moved the capital of the Teutonoic Order from Venice to a monastery at Malbork. The fortified monastery, constructed in the preceding three decades, was due for redevelopment. The subsequent periods of construction only truly finished with the purchase of the castle by the Polish king in 1457, by which time the fortress had become the most powerful in Europe. Photo by: roj czech

It is divided into three main sections, the High, Middle, and low Castles. The High Castle is an extraordinary fortress defended by multiple circuits of moats and curtain walling dotted with numerous towers. The Middle Castle consist of the former bailey converted into residential quarters, the Infirmary, the fan-vaulted Great Refectory, and the Great Masters’ Residence. The caste underwent a further program of improvements that took another century to complete, involving enlargement of the Low Castle area, which included St. Lawrence’s Church, workshops, an armory, stables, and other buildings. Photo by: LeszekZadlo

The complex is beautifully executed in brick with figurative friezes, fine windows traceries, and sculpted portals, all built in an imposing scale. Malbork Castle is one of the largest brick structures ever built, and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Location: Malbork, Poland. Photo by: LeszekZadlo
