1000 Nights Camp is a Bedouin-style resort 24 miles into the desert of Oman. Forty years ago, Oman was one of the Middle East’s most backward countries with fewer than a dozen miles of paved roads and a nearly impenetrable interior populated by heavily armed, warring tribes. Nowadays an upper-end tourism industry has also taken root there from beach resorts, mountain hiking trails, hundreds of forts and archaeological sites, and camps in the Sharqiya Sands — where guests can experience the tranquillity and splendor of the desert.

1000 Nights is made of tents, richly patterned lambs’ wool scattered about an oasis of native ghaf trees. The owner, Abdullah Al Harthy, who opened 1000 Nights in 2006, welcomed me with pomegranate juice, and urged guests to head into the dunes immediately to catch the last rays of the sun.

Each tent is like cozy sanctuary, simply furnished with a queen-size bed, a writing table and a coffee table and two easy chairs in the center of the room. Light trickled in through the doorway and a single window cut into the wool. A half-dozen pine tent poles supported the sagging top, and the uniform pattern on the woolen floor, roof and walls — red, green and ocher diamonds and stripes against a cream background — gave the place a warm atmosphere. A hot shower and toilet were behind the tent, open to the sky.

The dunes on either side presented a palette of tan, butterscotch, pink and russet, and were etched with delicate fingerprint-like whorls and ridges. The landscape fell away, revealing a seemingly infinite vista of rippled sand mounds, rising and falling like the folds in a quilt. Visitors to Oman from the United States can get a visa at Muscat’s international airport. A tent in 1000 Nights Camp costs 67 Omani rials, which is about $170.

The largest city of Oman, Muscat is dominated by spectacular mountains and the waters of the Gulf of Oman. Here the visitor can view the wonderful variety of nature: golden beaches, mountainous heights, and soft sand dunes. It is considered the pulsating heart of Oman. Muscat offers the combination of the relaxed atmosphere of an Indian Ocean town set amongst the life of a modern state. It is the breathtaking intermingling of ancient cultural heritage and modern style.

Muscat is a progressive city, where English speakers are relatively common. You’ll see houses, gates, old markets and winding roads redolent of authentic history, side by side with shops, buildings, and streets stamped with modern architecture. Also the city is renowned as one of the cleanest Arab capitals, and has gained the honour of winning the Cleanest Arab City Contest.

Muscat as a city has played a prominent historical role due to its strategic location. Don’t miss the imposing Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, atmospheric Old Muttrah Souk, Al Alam Royal Palace or Al Jalali Fort. The forts were built as prisons in the rocky mountains in 1580 during the Portuguese occupation, and have now been converted into museums. Things to do: Night Safari, Scuba Diving, Rock Climbing and more.

It is the second largest underground chamber in the world – big enough to fit ten jumbo jets into the floor space (also it is gigantic enough that the great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt would just about fit inside). Located in a remote area of the Selma Plateau at 1,380 m above sea level in the Sultanate of Oman, Majlis al Jinn is a single chamber measuring about 300 m by 200 m, with a domed ceiling 120 m high. The deepest part of the cave is 178 m. The volume of the chamber is approximately 4,000,000 m³ and covering an area of around 60,000m².

This is an extremely difficult cave to negotiate, and it is important that the expedition is not undertaken lightly and without professional guidance and specialist equipment. This is an amazing cave that can be accessed through a fissure in the ground with a rope. To enter the cave, one must initially be lowered down on a free-hanging rappel. There are two drops into the chamber: one of over 150m and the other of almost 120m.

The Republic of Yemen is a Middle Eastern country located on the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia. The borders are Saudi Arabia to the North, the Red Sea to the West, the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden to the South, and Oman to the East. The population of the country is 20 million people.

On The Aga Khan Awards of Architecture (this is an organization that encompass contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, re-use, and the area conservation, as well as landscaping and environmental issues) were announced two architectural restoration projects from The Republic of Yemen as winers. They are The Restoration of the Amiriya Complex in Rada and The Rehabilitation of the City of Shibam.

The selection process emphasizes architecture that not only provides for people’s physical, social and economic needs, but that also stimulates and responds to their cultural and spiritual expectations. Particular attention is given to building schemes that use local resources and appropriate technology in an innovative way, and to projects likely to inspire similar efforts elsewhere.

The restoration of the Amiriya Complex in Rada involved the training and employment of 500 craftsmen and artisans who used traditional methods to rescue the historic 16th century complex, which had been in a precarious state for years. The complex, which encompasses a prayer hall, school and sultan’s living quarters, is considered to be one of the richest examples of Islamic architecture in the world.

Shibam, with its 500-year-old multi-story mud buildings, was becoming a ghost town in 1982. Owing to Aga Khan Awards funding, builders were able to restore the ancient ‘skyscraper’ houses and modernize the sewage infrastructure in order to keep Shibam a living city with vibrant public squares and plazas.

The efforts between architectural teams and local artisans and builders who worked so diligently on the award-winning Yemenese projects allowed for a melding of urban renewal with the conservation process, as both communities were able to reinforce the link between their unique cultural heritage and improved economic conditions.
