Situated on an island so remote that eighty percent of its indigenous wildlife does not exist anywhere else on the planet, the Anjajavy luxury resort on Madagascar‘s sunny northwest coast takes isolation to a different level. The area surrounding the hotel can be reached only by low-altitude airplanes that offer superb views. The Anjajavy is classified as a four-star and few hotels around the world can rival its location. Photo by: avaltat

Spread along the pure white beaches on the hotel’s own bay are twenty-five secluded and air-conditioned rosewood villas with thatched roofs. In addition to the bedroom and bathroom facilities, each villa comes with a lounge, a breakfast area and an upstairs guest room. Satellite telephones are available from the reception, so that totally exhausted bedfellows can spend their entire vacations relaxing in the hammock on the veranda outside their villa. Photo by: makzimum

As well as the pristine beaches, the tremendous swimming pool, and the restaurant providing excellent cuisine, the surroundings comprise an 1,111 -acre (450-ha) nature reserve that is home to 1,800 mostly indigenous floral species and animals such as lemurs, birds-of-paradise, and several types of chameleon. Lemurs also frolic in the hotel’s own oasis, a landscaped garden where vacationers can have some afternoon tea surrounded by the lush vegetation and the beautiful sounds of Madagascar‘s wildlife. Photo by: Hayleighrp

For those who become tired of so much relaxation, the hotel also offer various water-based activities including sailing, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing, as well as guided walks in the surrounding jungle or excursions to nearby villages and markets. Location: Majunga, Madagascar. Photo by: makzimum

Less well known about the Tsingy is the vast cave network beneath it. This network of underground caves, streams and rivers is part of the reason for the Tsingy in the first place.

Man-eating tree can refer to any of various legendary carnivorous plants that are large enough to kill and consume a person or other large animal. The earliest well known report of a man-eating tree originated as a hoax was in still heavily-forested country Madagascar. With ninety percent of its indigenous flora found nowhere else in the world, it’s a jungle in which anything could be lurking.

I’m going to relate a true story. Once a German explorer Carl Liche led a group of Mkodo tribesmen deep into the heart of darkness. Liche was in front of something that no white man has ever seen: a trunk ‘like a pineapple eight feet high’, with thick leaves hanging to the ground from its peak, and sinister 7-foot tendrils stretching in every direction.

Most reports say it has a short, thick trunk and long tendrils of some sort which are used to catch prey. In J.W. Buel’s Land and Sea (1887), the plant is said to catch and consume large insects, but also attempts to consume humans.

The sundews’ bright colours and nectar lure insects to land on the ‘glandular tentacles’ that protrude from their leaves. Upon landing, the insect’s fate is sealed. A sticky gum holds it fast to the plant. Each of the tentacles slowly begins to bend towards the insect, coating it further in this killer glue. Digestive juices break down the insect’s soft parts. Several days later, this miniature ‘coffin’ will re-open, casting the insect’s remains to the wind. Sound familiar?

The baobabs are some of the largest and most attractive trees in the world, some 50m in height. They are truly magical trees. The Avenue of the Baobabs is located in Madagascar, close to the town of Morondava. It is a charming alley lined with majestic baobab trees, soaring 30 m into the sky. It is the most visited and photographed baobabs in the world.
