<p>This installation is created by the american artist <em><strong>Jeffrey Inaba</strong></em>, in collaboration with <em><strong>Luca Peralta Studio</strong></em>, <a title="Rome" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Rome"><em><strong>Rome</strong></em></a>, <a title="Italy" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/countries/Italy"><em><strong>Italy</strong></em></a>, at Rome&#8217;s Policlinico Umberto I, the most important hospital in the Italian capital and one of the largest in Europe. <span id="more-14426"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14428 aligncenter" title="waiting room" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/waiting-room2.jpg" alt="waiting room" width="540" height="358" /></p>
<p>The structure is focused on the waiting and transit areas, used every day by large numbers of people. Within the delicate and complex social context that a hospital represents, the artist offers different kinds of space where patients, passers-by, visitors and doctors can enjoy moments of relaxation.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14429 aligncenter" title="waiting room" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/waiting-room3.jpg" alt="waiting room" width="540" height="412" /></p>
<p>Colors, lights, geometric shapes and various environmentally friendly elements give the hospital a new, dynamic energy. Through art, waiting becomes potential energy, transmitting positivity and bringing an element of comfort to an architectural space normally seen as a temporary and highly emotional environment.  The solar PV system generates more than the energy needed for the electricity to run the lights and the monitors and DVD player inside the sphere.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14430 aligncenter" title="waiting room" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/waiting-room4.jpg" alt="waiting room" width="540" height="357" /></p>

<p>Named after Aeolus, god of the winds, the <em><strong>Aeolian Islands </strong></em>are a volcanic archipelago not far from <a title="Sicily" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Sicily"><em><strong>Sicily</strong></em></a>&#8217;s northern coast in the <em><strong>Tyrrhenian Sea</strong></em>. Also emerged as the <em>Lipari Islands</em> and <em>Isole Eolie</em>, the principal islands of the chain are <em><strong>Lipari</strong></em>, <em><strong>Salina</strong></em>, <em><strong>Filicudi</strong></em>, <em><strong>Alicudi</strong></em>, <em><strong>Stromboli</strong></em>, <em><strong>Panare</strong></em>a and <em><strong>Vulcano</strong></em>. Between them the islands boast beautiful scenery, great beaches, castles, thermal resorts, water sports, good fishing and, of course, some live volcanic activity. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to adam butler photography's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/adambutlerphotography/"><strong>adam butler photography</strong></a><span id="more-14118"></span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14123 aligncenter" title="Aeolian Islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/aeolian-islands5.jpg" alt="Aeolian Islands" width="540" height="397" /></p>
<p>These beautiful islands are quite rugged, with deep caverns, extraordinary rock formations, steep cliffs and splendid views. The volcanoes of <em><strong>Stromboli </strong></em>erupt fairly frequently. Rossellini&#8217;s 1950 film, Stromboli, was inspired by this volcano, which still regularly sends molten lava down its scarred rocks. This however, hasn&#8217;t prevented these islands from becoming popular smart resorts for well-headed Italians, so expect crowds in summer. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to adam butler photography's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/adambutlerphotography/"><strong>adam butler photography</strong></a></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14121 aligncenter" title="Aeolian Islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/aeolian-islands3.jpg" alt="Aeolian Islands" width="360" height="540" /></p>
<p><em><strong>Lapri</strong></em> is perhaps the most fascinating of the islands from the historical point of view, with its citadel and archeological remains. It is from there, the most of the boat trips to the beaches and other islands start out. Buoyant pumice and smooth black obsidian litter the beaches, and Lapri is well-served by restaurants and cafes. <em><strong>Filicudi</strong></em> with its basalt shoreline, is much less developed as a tourist resort &#8211; the water is magnificently clear, you can hire a boat or scuba dive, and the beaches are often empty. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to afewscoops' photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/afewscoops/"><strong>afewscoops</strong></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14120 aligncenter" title="Aeolian Islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/aeolian-islands2.jpg" alt="Aeolian Islands" width="540" height="405" /></p>
<p><em><strong>Panarea</strong></em> offers a lovely scene of rocky hills, ancient settlements, green slopes and pretty buildings characterized by columns and arches. There can be found the <em><strong>Hotel Raya</strong></em>, opened in the 1960s by artist Paolo Tilche, which has given Panarea the reputation as a party island. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to adam butler photography's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/adambutlerphotography/"><strong>adam butler photography</strong></a></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14119 aligncenter" title="Aeolian Islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/aeolian-islands1.jpg" alt="Aeolian Islands" width="540" height="400" /></p>
<p>The garden islands of<em><strong> Salina</strong></em> offers tranquility, perfect if you are looking for a hideaway. It is one of the greenest of the islands, producing capers, delicious fish and octopus and a golden dessert wine, Malvasia. It was there, that the film <em>Il Postino </em>was shot in the 1990s. There is a museum in <em><strong>Lingua</strong></em>, an interesting church in the post town of Santa Marina and spectacular rock formations at Pollara. The stone beaches are clean and rarely crowded, and the views over other islands are breathtaking. Stomboli has become island of choice for a select fashionable crowd. The <em><strong>Volcano</strong></em> is still main attraction, and is best viewed from an evening boat trip from where you can see the fiery show. Volcano&#8217;s other great attraction is the open air pool of volcanic mud, which attract bathers looking for a cure for skin complaints and other ailments. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to adam butler photography's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/adambutlerphotography/"><strong>adam butler photography</strong></a></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-14124 aligncenter" title="Aeolian Islands" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/aeolian-islands6.jpg" alt="Aeolian Islands" width="540" height="338" /></p>
<p><em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> May, June or September. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> 13,431. <strong><em>How to get there:</em></strong> By boat, ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo, Palermo or Naples. <em><strong>You should know:</strong></em> The archipelago is UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its geology and vulcanology. <em><strong>Photo by:</strong></em> <strong><a title="Link to Ithip.com Hotel Collection's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ithip/"><strong>Ithip.com Hotel Collection</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>It is very interesting to see the older women working on the lace and visiting the lace museum. There is very little business or shopping here, as it&#8217;s almost all residential. On the main street, you will find a shop filled with masks.</p>

<p>The largest of the <em><strong>Pontine Islands</strong></em> between <a title="Rome" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Rome"><em><strong>Rome</strong></em></a> and <a title="Naples" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Naples"><em><strong>Naples</strong></em></a>, <em><strong>Ponza</strong></em> is a volcanic remnant lying 33 km south of <em><strong>Cape Circeo</strong></em>, in the <em><strong>Tyrrhenian Sea</strong></em>. It&#8217;s a mixture of vividly coloured cliffs and crags 12 km long and never more than 2 km wide. Such rocks, kaolin and tufa has eroded into fantastic shapes, inspiring names like &#8216;the monk&#8217; and &#8216;the giant pair of pants&#8217;. You look down on stepped terraces of vines, cactus pears and fig trees, ancient and modern. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to melazeta's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/21420473@N03/"><strong>melazeta</strong></a><span id="more-13316"></span></strong></p>

<p><em><strong>Ponza</strong></em> was once a Roman penal colony for unwanted Christians. Its isolation also served for the <em><strong>Roman Emperor Nero</strong></em>&#8217;s exile and again for <em><strong>Mussolini</strong></em> in 1943. Today the clusters of domed pastel cubes that are the hallmark of Ponsese architecture are exclusive in a different way. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to lele orpo's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/leleorpo/"><strong>lele orpo</strong></a></p>

<p>The island is protected from development, and existing residents have curtailed neon bars and discos. You don&#8217;t have to be rich to enjoy its remoteness beauty and terrific diving, but Ponza&#8217;s style certainly favours the wealthy Italians who holiday there. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to [hirony]'s photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hirony/"><strong>[hirony]</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>The smallest and most southerly inhabited island on the <a title="Tuscan Archipelago" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/index.php?s=Tuscan+Archipelagohttp://www.wayfaring.info/search/Tuscan+Archipelago"><em><strong>Tuscan Archipelago</strong></em></a>, <em><strong>Giannutri</strong></em> is a half moon of just 3 sq km. Centuries of shifting rock falls have made it one of the finest diving sites in the <a title="Mediterranean" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Mediterranean"><em><strong>Mediterranean</strong></em></a>, with no sand to cloud the lapis waters; and since there are beaches at all to attract tourism, but the circlet of rocks has preserved the island&#8217;s wild beauty from all modern depredation. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to bizzo_65's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/albertobizzini/"><strong>bizzo_65</strong></a><span id="more-13301"></span></p>

<p>There are no cars and few people. You walk on silence of the purely natural world, senses sharpened by intense colours and heady perfumes of herb and flower. Offshore it gets even better. Dolphins, turtles and sea horses wander huge meadows of ravishing underwater Poseidonia. Ghosts of 2,000 year-old wrecks could be spot and guarded by passage of fishes. Very large areas of the <em><strong>Marine Park</strong></em> are set aside for swimming and diving. Giannutri&#8217;s utopian charm provides an opportunity to escape all forms of modern hurly-burly, on land or underwater. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to FabriDoss' photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/41684401@N07/"><strong>FabriDoss</strong></a></p>

<p><em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> May to September. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em>102. <em><strong>How to get there:</strong></em> By ferry from Porto Santo Stefano on Argentario. <em><strong>You should know:</strong></em> The exact borders of the Marine Park, there are heavy fines for breaking the rules. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to Ruben_Sniper's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ruben_sniper/"><strong>Ruben_Sniper</strong></a></p>

<p>Near by <em><strong>Lake Maggiore </strong></em>in the foothills of the <a title="Alps" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Alps"><em><strong>Alps</strong></em></a>, <em><strong>Lake Orta</strong></em> is a tranquil, often misty vision of scenic charm. Of the villages and tiny market towns that sit comfortably on its green, wooded hillside banks, <em><strong>Orta town</strong></em> is the prettiest and one of the oldest. It lies on the end of a promontory opposite the intriguing island 400 m offshore on which much of its reputation rests. Photo by: <strong><a title="Link to edwindejongh's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/edwindejongh/"><strong>edwindejongh</strong></a><span id="more-13269"></span></strong></p>

<p><em><strong>Isola San Giulio</strong></em> is tiny &#8211; only 275 m long and 140 m wide, but crowded with buildings, towers and terraces. There are <em><strong>Benedictine monastery</strong></em> and seminary, the castle and <em><strong>Bishop&#8217;s Palace</strong></em>. But the largest building on the island is in fact the <em><strong>Basilica of St Giulio</strong></em>. Photo by: <strong><a title="Link to Wagman_30's photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/11445691@N02/"><strong>Wagman_30</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>When you arrive on the island,<em><strong> San Giulio</strong></em>&#8217;s beauty is magnificent with unexpected quiet. The short circular lane between the monastery and the sumptuous 18th century private villas lining the shore is even called &#8216;<em><strong>The way of Silence</strong></em>&#8216; and dotted with signs admonishing you to &#8216;Listen to the water, the wind, your steps&#8217;, &#8216;If you can be yourself, you are everything&#8217;. <p><em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> Year round. Come for the festival of Ancient Music at the Villa Tallone during June, or the piano recitals on Sundays in September. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> 110. <em><strong>How to get there:</strong></em> By ferry from Orta San Giulio, Omegna, Pella or any of the other lakeside villages. <p><em><strong>Ischia</strong></em> is the largest of the islands in the <em><strong>Bay of Naples</strong></em>, and many people consider it to be more beautiful even than <em><strong>Capri</strong></em> to its southeast. <em><strong>Ischia</strong></em> is a volcanic island 10 km long and 7 km wide that rises to 788 m  at <em><strong>Monte Epomeo</strong></em>, which divides the island into two zones. The south and the west takes the brunt of hot dry winds from <a title="Africa" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Africa"><em><strong>Africa</strong></em></a>, and cacti, agave and palms thrive in the sub-tropical landscape. In the northern shadow of Monte Epomeo, chestnuts flourish among the typical <a title="Mediterranean" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Mediterranean"><em><strong>Mediterranean</strong></em></a> trees like holm oak, cypress, cork, almond and olives. Citrus groves scent the whole island. Despite of its high population and million of tourists, <em><strong>Ischia</strong></em> still has dozen of deserted beaches and coves for chillin&#8217;.<span id="more-13248"></span>People come for its thermal springs and volcanic mud treatments. <em><strong>Ischia</strong></em> has lots its jet-set exclusively since the 1960s when it epitomized the fashionable nation of <em><strong>&#8216;La Dolce Vita</strong></em>&#8216;, but that has been replaced by a new kind of participatory glamour that draws in visitors. The<a title="island" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/island"><em><strong> island</strong></em></a> matches its towns and resorts to a wide variety of visitors&#8217; expectations. Tranquil countryside walks, cafe-crawling, white sandy <a title="beaches" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/beaches"><em><strong>beaches</strong></em></a>, or 24-hour fashionable clubbing co-exist without tears. Ischia really is a holiday paradise.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-13250 aligncenter" title="ischia" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/ischia2.jpg" alt="ischia" width="540" height="258" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> March to November. Come at the end of the summer for two weeks of parades, concerts and general carousing. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> 60, 335 (and six million visitors each year). <em><strong>Getting there:</strong></em> By hydrofoil from <a title="Naples" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Naples"><em><strong>Naples</strong></em></a> Beverello or by ferry from Naples Beverello or Pozzuoli, to Ischia Porto. <em><strong>Photos:</strong></em> Google search.</p>

<p><em><strong>Capraia</strong></em> is a wild and hilly island, the only volcanic one in the <em><strong>Tuscan Archipelago</strong></em>, <a title="Italy" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Italy"><em><strong>Italy</strong></em></a>. A 300 to 400 m ridge divides it into two unequal slopes. On the west, sheer walls of rock are cracked into ravines and riddled with caves, to the east the slopes are in a series of shallow valleys down to the sea. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to Ravello1's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ravello1/"><strong>Ravello1<span id="more-13205"></span></strong></a></strong></p>

<p>One part of the island is covered in brush with a few small villas and old farm buildings used barely in the summer. A <em><strong>Roman </strong></em>fortress overlooks the town, crumbling watchtowers dot the landscape, and ruined villas recall the Romans&#8217; long romance with the island. The network of trails that hikers used today are 2,000 year-old <em><strong>Etruscan</strong></em> logging trails. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><strong><a title="Link to wenzday01's photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wenzday01/"><strong>wenzday01</strong></a></strong></p>

<p>Nature has largely reclaimed <em><strong>Capraia</strong></em>, and most of the<a title="Island" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/island"><em><strong> island</strong></em></a>, and the sea for miles around it, is part of a huge <em><strong>National Park and Marine Reserve</strong></em>. There&#8217;s no nightlife, no neon and no marketing scam to exploit the pristine <a title="Mediterranean" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Mediterranean"><em><strong>Mediterranean</strong></em></a> flora and fauna. For visitors, the symbiosis of land, sea and people is like stumbling on a blueprint of how you want the Mediterranean to be. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to Boga85's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/boga85/"><strong>Boga85</strong></a></p>

<p>Where the <em><strong>Tiber</strong></em> flows through<em><strong> <a title="Rome" href="http://www.wayfaring.info/search/Rome">Rome</a></strong></em>, there is a single island in its southern bend. Technically, <em><strong>Tiber Island </strong></em>is an eyot with an agglomeration of ancient fluvial silt and detritus. To Romans, it is th site of the oldest settlement in the area. As Rome grew across its seven hills, the island become first an isolation ward for the chronically sick, and then a place of healing and even cure. Today the church there is called <em><strong>St Bartholomew</strong></em>&#8217;s after its primary relics, and is enclosed by a massive basilica. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to Sgommapiuma's photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sgommapiuma/"><strong>Sgommapiuma<span id="more-12582"></span></strong></a></p>

<p>The more you interest <em><strong>Tiber Island</strong></em>, the more you will be intrigued by small details. The pedestrian <em><strong>Ponte Fabricio</strong></em>, Rome&#8217;s oldest surviving bridge, connects it to the <em><strong>Campo Martio</strong></em>. Two four-faced Janus herms are mounted on its parapet &#8211; Janus is usually two-faced, looking both ways, and four-faced images guarded only the most important intersection. Look under the perimeter stairway at the downstream end to see the 1st century marble decoration of the island. Tiber Island is like one widespread commitment to its real meaning. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to hops_76's photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hops_76/"><strong>hops_76</strong></a></p>

<p><em><strong>When to go:</strong></em> Year-round. <em><strong>Population:</strong></em> 1 (officially the resident priest of St Bartholomew&#8217;s). <em><strong>How to get there:</strong></em> By car, from Trastevere via the restored 46 BC Ponte Cesito, to one of about 30 parking spaces near the piazza; or on foot, from the Piazza Monte Savello, near the Ghetto, via Ponte Fabricio. <em><strong>Photo by: </strong></em><a title="Link to Mailbags' photostream" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mailbags/"><strong>Mailbags</strong></a></p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Pienza is a renaissance town near Siena, and it’s one of the beautiful hill top towns of the entire Tuscany. It was built by the order of Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini in 1558 on top of the medieval castle of Corsignano, which marked the border between the possessions of Siena, <a href="http://www.wayfaring.info/index.php?s=florence">Florence</a> and Orvieto. Thanks to its position (in a panoramic position overlooking the Orcia river valley) Pienza was of great importance during the Middle Ages. <span id="more-11783"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-11785" title="sightseeing_pienza" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/sightseeing_pienza.jpg" alt="sightseeing_pienza" width="450" height="654" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The quite atmosphere of the center, the incredible landscapes of the countryside all around, a coffee sitting in the main square will be an unforgettable experience. In 1996 <a href="http://www.wayfaring.info/category/topics/unesco/">UNESCO</a> designed Pienza as past of a World Heritage Site. The visit to the ancient hermitage of Pienza is probably one of the most fascinating and special experiences not included in the usual tourism routes in the area.</p>

<p>It is one of the most authentic corners of the <a href="http://www.wayfaring.info/index.php?s=amalfi+coast"><strong><em>Amalfi Coast</em></strong></a>, reckoned by many to be the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Europe. Praiano it was once the summer residence of the Doge, the dukes of the Amalfi Republic. It is a small town located between Amalfi and Positano, away from the most touristy areas and rich with history, culture, views and comforts.<span id="more-11611"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-11617" title="praiano" src="http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/praiano.jpg" alt="praiano" width="485" height="321" /></p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Superb views of the coastline can be enjoyed from pleasant panoramic walks around Praiano, as well as from more demanding hikes above the town. Take the boat trip inside and you see a remarkable green light reflecting from the water and the rocks of the cave. One of Praiano&#8217;s most spectacular sights is the Parish church, dedicated to St. Luke, the Chiesa di San Luca Evangelista. Within the church are several side chapels, some treasured relics of the saint, and an attractive eighteenth-century majolica floor. <br />
