Yasawa Islands sits majestically to the north of the Mamanucas Archipelago, and are much less commercially orientated than their southern cousins. They are consisting of 16 larger islands and dozen of smaller ones. The islands have been a popular cruise destination from the 1950s, but land-based tourism was forbidden. Since then the popularity of the islands has been growing and they moved from back-packer heaven to mainstream destination. New development is unavoidable, but the wonderful island scenery has not been touched and there is more than enough coastline to go around. Resort are tend to be isolated. most of the island villages are without electricity or running water. But there is fresh water everywhere, so the locals know how to survive. Roughly 470 km north of Fiji, this small group – Rotuma Island plus four offshore islets – is a Fijian territory and home to the unique race known as Rotumans. The people there more closely resemble Polynesians. Dependency status allows the island more political autonomy than other parts of Fiji. Even now the door is barely open, with visits strictly rationed by Rotuman elders who are determined that their island paradise will not be spoiled by the intrusive demands of mass tourism. The people are gracious, but expect visitors to respect their customs and be modest in behaviour and dress. There are no hotels or resorts on Rotuma, but simple accommodation can be found. The chosen visitor will find a volcanic island with many small cones that is covered with lush vegetation. Mamanuca Archipelago is scattered off Nadi Bay on Viti Levu’s west coast. There are about 20 islands, but be careful which one you choose – some are completely covered during high tide. The Mamanuca Islands are serious tourist attractions, offering many coral islets to explore and numerous beach resorts to suit every pocket, plus all the water-sports and diving activities for which Fiji is famous. These are not the most beautiful islands you will ever see, but the beaches are fabulous with turquoise crystal waters. The resort islands are Malolo, Beachcomber, Mana, Malolo Lailai, Monu, Monuriki, Navini, Tavarua, Tavua, Tokoriki and Treasure Island. The inner Mamanucas consist of small, flat and coral isles. The middle islands are the largest and offer gentle hills with paths and summits with breathtaking views over the archipelago and the opportunity to find less-crowded beaches. You will pay a premium to holiday on the Mamanuca Islands, but at many resorts you will share your island with more than enough people.
