Yasawa Islands sits majestically to the north of the Mamanucas Archipelago, and are much less commercially orientated than their southern cousins. They are consisting of 16 larger islands and dozen of smaller ones. They are impressive islands, with breathtaking beaches and enchanting fishing villages, which provide an opportunity to observe the traditional way of life. These islands offer plenty for everybody, from fabulous beaches and clear lagoons to exclusive resorts for the well-heeled. Photo by: msdstefan

The islands have been a popular cruise destination from the 1950s, but land-based tourism was forbidden. Since then the popularity of the islands has been growing and they moved from back-packer heaven to mainstream destination. New development is unavoidable, but the wonderful island scenery has not been touched and there is more than enough coastline to go around. Resort are tend to be isolated. most of the island villages are without electricity or running water. But there is fresh water everywhere, so the locals know how to survive. Photo by: ryanocerous1979

Indeed many of the resort are owned and operated by friendly islanders, retaining a rustic charm that combines with the majestic scenery to ensure the visitors Yasawas feel because they discover the real ‘South Pacific’. Photo by: Alasdair Milne

When to go: Any time, there is no specific period hot and dry conditions predominate, with cool nights. Population: 6,000. Getting there: From Lautoka by fast catamaran (2-4 hours) or seaplane (20 minutes). Arrange it all upon arrival at Nadi International Airport. Photo by: ryanocerous1979

Roughly 470 km north of Fiji, this small group – Rotuma Island plus four offshore islets – is a Fijian territory and home to the unique race known as Rotumans. The people there more closely resemble Polynesians. Dependency status allows the island more political autonomy than other parts of Fiji. It is possible to visit this isolated island, though Rotumans voted against opening the place up to tourism as recently as 1985. Photo by: DS355

Even now the door is barely open, with visits strictly rationed by Rotuman elders who are determined that their island paradise will not be spoiled by the intrusive demands of mass tourism. The people are gracious, but expect visitors to respect their customs and be modest in behaviour and dress. There are no hotels or resorts on Rotuma, but simple accommodation can be found. The chosen visitor will find a volcanic island with many small cones that is covered with lush vegetation. It has a large reef, spectacular corals, abundant sea life (including dolphins and turtles) and some of the best and untouched beaches in all Fiji. Photo by: kiaa_ll

When to go: The rainy season is best avoided, so make it April to October. Even then the humidity may come as a shock, but cool sea breezes can dilute the impact. Population: 2,800. How to get there: Fly in to the airstrip on the north shore on Air Fiji’s weekly flight from Suva. Photo by: kiaa_ll

Mamanuca Archipelago is scattered off Nadi Bay on Viti Levu’s west coast. There are about 20 islands, but be careful which one you choose – some are completely covered during high tide. The Mamanuca Islands are serious tourist attractions, offering many coral islets to explore and numerous beach resorts to suit every pocket, plus all the water-sports and diving activities for which Fiji is famous. Most resorts offer complementary kayaks, hobby cats and reef snorkeling trips. Photo by: abbietabbie

These are not the most beautiful islands you will ever see, but the beaches are fabulous with turquoise crystal waters. The resort islands are Malolo, Beachcomber, Mana, Malolo Lailai, Monu, Monuriki, Navini, Tavarua, Tavua, Tokoriki and Treasure Island. The inner Mamanucas consist of small, flat and coral isles. The middle islands are the largest and offer gentle hills with paths and summits with breathtaking views over the archipelago and the opportunity to find less-crowded beaches. The outer islands are more rocked, with isolated bays and volcanic rocks. They have traditional fishing villages. They are for people trying to get far from the madding crowd. Photo by: _Zinni_

You will pay a premium to holiday on the Mamanuca Islands, but at many resorts you will share your island with more than enough people. Besides, as soon as you’ve settled comfortably into your space on the beach lots of day-trippers may suddenly invade from the mainland – a budget treat for them and a pain for you. But this is traditional Fijian culture you are looking for. Photo by: ranicas

When to go: All round the year – the weather is sunny, the seas calm and breezes cooling. Population: 2,100 (2007). Photo by: ~marcus~

Wakaya Club is one of the most amazing, luxurious, beautiful and relaxing resorts. Soaring cliffs, primeval forests, white crescent beaches, blue waters- the Wakaya Club presents the South Pacific at its most pristine. Located on a private 2,200-acre island, this exclusive, luxury resort offers every amenity imaginable, including 12 staff members to each guest couple, private beaches, gourmet cuisine, ocean view golf, state-of-the-art fitness center, breathtaking scuba and snorkeling and more.
This place is special with its secluded location, overwhelming natural beauty, and coddling staff, it has everything you want from a trip to the Fijian islands. The eight regular bures, the local version of cottages, are decorated with a relaxed blend of natural woods, bamboo wall coverings, and elements of high design such as Tibetan rugs. The Governor’s bure is even better: 1,850 square feet with its own private garden, Asian antiques, and a Jacuzzi. The Wakaya Resort bures each have a living room, separate bedroom (with a romantic four-post king size bed) and a bathroom complete with glass-enclosed shower, over-sized bath tub, three sinks and bidet.
Breeze Couples Spa at the Wakaya Club offers a range of services and treatments that include the signature, 80-minute “East meets West” couples massage, which can be performed in the privacy of your bure. For the ultimate indulgence, there’s a Tini La Niga (ten-hand massage), where five masseuses work on one body in tandem. Or float peacefully at Wakaya Club during a water shiatsu massage in a body-temperature pool.

Meals are served wherever and whenever guests so desire, and dinner can be taken in a grand open-sided dining room under a 60-foot cathedral ceiling. Breakfast and Lunch is served on the deck overlooking the lagoon, in the Palm Grove Restaurant, or in your bure. The sound of drums signals that lunch is ready, and you can savor it in your Wakaya Club bure, on the deck above the lagoon, or the Palm Grove restaurant. Dinner is served in the Palm Grove Restaurant. The Wakaya Club specializes in Pacific Rim cuisine inspired by the island’s plentiful resources. In addition, Wakaya has a Visiting Chef program that brings highly acclaimed talent into the Wakaya kitchen including Nobu Matsuhisa, Charlie Trotter & Grant McPhearson amongst others.

The best things on Wakaya Island are the private beaches. They’re actually coves and no one else can see you, so you can do as you wish for as long as you want. They also bring a lovely meal, will cook it for you before they leave and give you whatever you want to drink. They’ll bring snorkeling gear and sun hats and whatever you want. Scuba diving and snorkeling reveal the amazing underwater life beneath the waters surrounding the Fijian Islands. At Wakaya Club there is also tennis and golf — and since the entire island resort only welcomes a maximum of 24 people at a time, there is never a wait to play. For those who take their relaxation seriously, there’s a hammock at each Wakaya Club bure.
The Wakaya Club has received the Island Hideaway of the Year Award from Andrew Harper’s “Hideaway Report”, and was selected by Traveler as among the top 25 destination resorts in the world. The mission of this resort is to deliver to guests, Charm, Comfort, Courtesy, Cuisine and Consistency in all.
