Guests may not expected to find a luxury country house hotel on a small island off the coast of Estonia. Certainly Padaste Manor is a unique escape: a fabulous conversion of a historic estate in a stunning location. For 700 years, Padaste was the country estate of the Von Buxhoeveden family. The crescent of grand buildings facing the sea dates from the nineteenth-century, to when the wealthy Baron Axel von Buxhoeveden was imperial hunting master at the court of Czar Nicholas II. This was his family’s summer home, but Von Buxhoeveden was assassinated by revolutionaries as he left the manor one day in 1919.

In the Soviet era, the manor became a fish distribution center and home for the elderly and was completely abandoned twenty years ago. It still stands in a landscaped park surrounded by meadows and forests looking out across Padaste Bay and is now an opulent country house hotel, with all the crackling log fires, squashy sofas, and wood paneling that implies.

The fourteen rooms have lavish fabrics, simple wooden floors, and thick rugs. Guests are treated to unobtrusive technology, and spa treatments are available in traditional period rooms. The balconies and terraces all have wonderful views across the island shores and softly breaking waves. True romantics should choose Room 15, which has its very own poetry loft. You will climb a farmer’s ladder to tiny mezzanine, which is crammed with a fine collection of poetry. A small window opens up to the sky, and you may lean back in your chair and escape into the world of verse. Location: Muhu Island, Estonia. Photos by: adomadom

Hiiumaa is a bleak but breathtakingly beautiful island in the Eastern Baltic, a nature reserve that covers an area of just under 1,000 sq km. It is Estonia‘s second largest island, separated from the mainland by 22 k wide strait and surrounded by some 200 deserted islets and reefs, where, over the centuries hundreds of ships have come to grief. Photo by: Tiina Gill

More than half the island is covered in pine, birch, and spruce forest with many rare plant species – a heaven for wildlife, elks, deer, wild boar, and even lynxes may be spotted. The 320 km coastline of meadowland, peat moor, juniper shrubbery, and dunes is highly indented with long stretches of isolated sandy beach. Photo by: sularahasass

Among the hundreds of bird species that nest and migrate here are black storks, golden eagles, cranes and avocets. Less than a quarter of the island is farmland and there is only one sizable settlement, the town of Kardla. Photo by: saekhow

Although little of the island’s history has been recorded, there is a strong sense of its seafaring tradition that continues to be handed down from one generation to the next one. Hiiumaa is a perfect place to commune with nature, explore unusual scenery and escape from the mainstream tourist routes. Photo by: Tiina Gill

When to go: May to September, although hardy eco-tourists will be prepared to brave the icy Russian winds. Population: 11,900. How to get there: Ferry from Rohukula, mainland Estonia, takes 90 minutes (no boats in winter when the sea is icy up). Photo by: Tiina Gill

One of Europe’s oldest cities, founded in 1154, Tallinn has remained remarkably unchanged for the past 600 years. The capital of Estonia is small city – one of the most enchanting cities in Europe with tourist areas easily explored on foot. Tallinn is a blend of modern city filled with boutiques, sports centers, hotels, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and medieval turrets and narrow, cobbled streets set beneath of 14th century churches. In 1997 UNESCO inscribes Tallinn on World Heritage List.

The spirit of the 14th and 15th centuries survives intact in central Tallinn judiciously restored and fascinating to explore. For a look into the past with most popular history attractions in Tallinn’s Old town: Town Hall Square with the onion-domed 1900 cathedral, Rocca al Mare Open Air Museum’s typical rural Estonian taverns, windmills and watermills, Town Hall pharmacy, Toompea castle, Kadriorg palace, Toomkirik and Oleviste churchs, St. Olav’s spire which was once the tallest in the world.

The sport ride is a totally bizarre but also it’s fun experience. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages who don’t mind being strapped inside an enormous clear plastic ball.

The Zorb is a gigantic polythene ball standing about three metres in height, which contains inner capsule that is suspended into position by thousand nylon strands of varying colours. There are two choices of ride.

You can choose between a harness or hydro ride. The hydro ride is similar to sitting inside a washing machine, as you slither down the hill. Bring a dry set of clothes if you choose this option! The harness is more extreme, one of you then does giant forward rolls down the hill, the other does backward rolls.

Zorbing is currently practiced in United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, Estonia, Australia’s Gold Coast, Canada, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Japan, India, Thailand and Slovenia. Prices vary for different packages, but generally is about $40 a trip.

The Valaste waterfall is known to the highest not only in Estonia, but also in the Baltic States. It is located along the Ontika cliff, which is 56 m high, and has a fall of 26 m. It’s a popular tourist attraction with its spray freezing up spectacularly in winter.

The Valaste waterfall is artificially created recently years ago in the course of draining works. This phenomenal scene is most impressive in springtime – when the snow is melting and the waters rush down from the dramatic cliff. In wintertime the water freezes and forms fairy-tale like ice galleries.

Opposite to waterfall has been built platform for tourists, from where you can observe the waterfall. There is a parking lot and a very well made trail using a double spiral staircase to get down the cliff.
