Built in 1999, the “Black Diamond” is a modern extension to the Royal Danish Library which is the largest library in the Nordic countries. The old library dates from 1906 and was designed by architect Hans J. Holm. Located at the waterfront of Copenhagen, this new library building is designed by the Danish architects Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen. Contains a library, concert hall, bookshop, café, exhibition space and restaurant, it is the first in a series of large-scale cultural buildings along Copenhagen’s waterfront.

The nick-name is a reference to its cladding made of black granite from Zimbabwe that reflects the water of the harbor. The Black Diamond has become the pride of Copenhagen and is a natural gathering place. The library as an open, democratic institution embracing not only the study of books but opening up to many other media and cultural activities. The facilities include a 600-seat auditorium, the Queen’s Hall, used for concerts – mainly chamber music and jazz – literary events, theatrical performances and conferences. The seven stories of the building contain not only traditional library functions such as the four new reading rooms, but also a concert hall, exhibition galleries, bookshop, café and restaurant (as we already mentioned).

The Library contains numerous historical treasures; all works that have been printed in Denmark since the 17th century are deposited there. Thanks to extensive donations in the past the library holds nearly all known Danish printed works back to the first Danish book, printed in 1482. The holdings include a 2000-item collection of books by and about Carl Linné, which was inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 1997 in recognition of its historical significance.

No, this isn’t a screenshot from the latest SimCity computer game or from the Facebook Farmville. These circular structures form a little community located in the suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. The city has a multitude of districts, each representing its time and with its own distinctive character, making up a dense urban fabric. The photos are part of the project “Earth From Above” which is a result of five-year airborne odyssey across six continents of the local photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

Earth From Above” is a spectacular presentation of large scale photographs of astonishing natural landscapes. These houses are called “Kolonihavehuse”. They are small houses, about 30-40 m², with a garden which usually have a living room, bathroom and a small kitchen. Each building has to stand on its own cultivable allotment; hence the long narrow plots. According to the Danish Wikipedia the landscape architect who came up with the idea of round allotments wanted them to look like old round villages with a well in the middle where people could meet and exchange gossips. Other distinctive features of Copenhagen include the abundance of water, the many parks, and the bicycle paths that line most streets.

Situated in the middle of North Jutland, Aalborg is the fourth largest town in Denmark. Founded by the Vikings, this is a lively city offers lots of fun and exciting experiences for the young as well as the not so young.
Aalborg features many beautiful buildings and restored old houses, some of them you can only enjoy from the outside, others you can get inside and then there are some which are made into in historical museums.

Valby Park is one of the largest one in Copenhagen and also boasts with a few surprises. Mostly known to locals as the venue for large concerts and one-day festivals, Valby Park is located a 15 minute bike-ride from the city center. In the park you can find playgrounds, people barbecuing and a quite nice collection of roses in the Rose Garden (boasting 12000 roses).

I have been once to this lovely park and one of my favourite features is the Disc Golf course. Disc Golf is an – admittedly – odd sport that basically combines golf with Frisbee. Disc Golf allows for both beginners as well as experienced players to play as you can choose to start from the easy (red), middle (yellow) or hard (white) tees. And just like in regular golf, the goal is to get to the target in as few throws as possible.

You throw the disc towards a strange basket on a pole equipped with chains for catching the disc. The Valby Park course has 18 holes in a varied landscape with both water hazards and small hills. Most holes in the park are par 3 or par 4. You should expect a round to take about 2 hours. To the best of my beliefs, this is one of the best ways to spend Saturday afternoon before a night out with friends.

Valby Park dated back from 1939 and is the youngest of the Copenhagen parks. The park is located on an old landfill and has over time experienced great changes. One of the biggest changes happened in the mid 90s with the construction of park, is the new forest, a poplar avenue, 17 theme gardens, a large party room, and a lake.

Getting there: By Train – take the S train from Kobenhavn H station to New Ellebjerg Station. Then Ellebjergvej to the first traffic light where you will see the park in fron of you. By Bus – take Bus 3A, in effect, “Kgs Enghave / Valbyparken” which terminates right at the main entrance.

New York artist Tom Fruin creates an outdoor sculpture called Kolonihavehus in the plaza of the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen. The quirky house has an appearance of a friendly and colorful stained-glass house, yet it also evokes thoughts of churches and Charles Rennie Macintosh.

Fruin’s sculpture is made of a thousand reclaimed pieces of plexiglass ranging in size from 2×2 to 24×36 inches. They originate from many sources, including a closed- down plexi distributorship near Copenhagen, a framing shop, the basement of the Danish State Art Workshops, and the dumpsters outside the Danish Architecture Center. The sculpture was brought to life by daily performances by Copenhagen-based CoreAct headed by Anika Barkan and Helene Kvint. The performances included poetry of the Danish Vagn Steen, Computer-controlled light sequences by Nuno Neto and a sound installation by Astrid Lomholt.

The pieces of the house initially were small garden sheds that were designed to give cramped and often impoverished city-dwellers a small plot and a refuge from city life.

William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy “Hamlet” takes place in the castle of Kronborg. Known by many as “Elsinore”, the castle is located in Elsinore (or Helsingor), North of Copenhagen. Immortalised by Shakespeare, it is a Renaissance castle built by Danish King Frederik II in 1574-84.

It has played a significant role in the history of this part of northern Europe, because of its strategic position between the North Sea and the Baltic. Its present design replaced the old castle in 1574-85, when the Dutch architects Hans van Paeschen and Antonie van Opbergen built the renaissance style castle we know today. Kronborg Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List year 2000.

Odense is a wonderful city with a vibrant student life and many parks and green areas which bring a pleasant atmosphere to the everybody. A city that establishes strong partnerships between everyone who wants to contribute to the quality of life and growth – in the areas where new and offbeat ideas emerge and converge. And the most sustainable city in Denmark.

Odense is one of the biggest towns in Denmark, with lots of green oasises – even in the center of town. You can sail on the river, take a walk in one of our parks or take bicycle ride on one of our suggested routes. During the summer Odense offers lots of events all year round from festivals, concerts, markets to much more both large and small. A lots of restaurants, comfy cafés, theatres, cinemas and more are part of the Odense spirit.

Odense boasts a wide range of museums of international and regional interest, including everything from traditional Danish art at the Funen Art Museum to international art and photo exhibitions at Brandts Exhibition Complex. There are special exhibitions and events all year round. The city is also birth place of Hans Christian Andersen, world famous poet and fairy tale writer. The city lies close to Odense Fjord on the Odense River and gives access to the town’s harbor from the fjord. Accessibility to Odense is possible by ferry service by the Great Belt Bridge. When the bridge opened, it was the second longest suspension bridge in the world. Its construction greatly cut transportation time between Odense and the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Copenhagen can now be reached by trains from Odense in 1 hour and 15 minutes and Aarhus in 1 hour and 35 minutes. The city is also served by Odense Airport, which operates regular flights only during the summer months.
