Pilsen, is a city in western Bohemia in the Czech Republic. It is the capital of the Plzen Region and the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic. The eventful history of the city can be seen during the sightseeing of many interesting buildings. The historical city centre, is dominated by the slim tower of the Gothic St. Bartholomew Cathedral. With its height of 102,26 m (335 feet), this tower is the highest church spire in Bohemia.

Nowadays Pilsen has 165 000 inhabitants and is a significant cultural, business and industrial centre, famous mostly due to the products of Plzen’s brewery and the heavy machinery factories Skoda. In the last years the city has been taking taking step by step a new, more attractive face and wishes to be an appeal “entry gate” on the passage from West Europe. The city is also known for the Pilsner Urquell (since 1842) and Gambrinus (since 1869) breweries, currently owned by South African Breweries. A popular tourist attraction is the Plzensky Prazdroj brewery tour where visitors can discover the history of beer. The pilsener style of beer was developed in Plze? in the 19th century.

Elegant architecture and beer spots are not the only things that can be found in Pilsen. Over the last few years a big part of the city has cleaned itself up, brushed off the cobwebs and opened several wonderful new attractions, both beer related and not. The result is a worthwhile destination for visitors — as well as a dark-horse win for the city as one of two European Capitals of Culture for 2015. Not every aspect of local culture will be so unfamiliar to the American traveler. Less than 50 miles from the German border, Pilsen was one of the rare Czech cities to have been liberated by American troops during World War II, and remarkably, a pro-United States vibe remains to this day. During the city’s annual Liberation Festival in May, local re-enactors in period uniforms drive around in restored United States Army jeeps. Surviving veterans leave their signatures on the walls of the six-year-old Patton Memorial, a museum dedicated to the city’s occupation and liberation.
