Founded by Diego Velazquez in the early 16th century Trinidad had its days of prosperity in 18th and 19th centuries thanks to the sugar trade. Marvellous buildings, palaces and churches … The city has been declared by the UNESCO Humanitarian Culture, thanks to its colonial architectural and its historic heritage.

Trinidad contains beautiful churches and public squares, the most important of which is Main Square-surrounded by buildings of great historic architectural interest that is considered the second most important square in the country, after Havana’s Cathedral Square.

Located on the Ancon peninsula, Trinidad also is known as the Museum city of the Caribbean Sea. In fact this is one of the few places in Cuba where you can access a great beach without staying at a resort hotel. To walk on its stone streets, admire its churches and parks, or to be received with a warm cup of coffee by any neighbor, are just some of the experiences you have to live in this magical corner of Cuba.

Defying all logic, the world’s 105th-largest country is also one of its most instantly recognizable. Think psychedelic Che Guevara murals and antediluvian American Buicks, dudes with bongos and old men slapping down dominoes, queues outside ration shops and communist cadres smoking chunky Montecristos. Cuba has a way of going against the grain. It’s all part of its historical make-up, part of its dynamism, part of its intrinsic beauty.

Travel here not only requires a passport, money and a good sturdy rucksack; it also requires flexibility, creativity, good humor, patience and a healthy sense of adventure. Speaking Spanish, though not a prerequisite, is undoubtedly a huge advantage, and will allow you to travel further and dig deeper than the average tourist.

Linguistic dexterity aside, Cuba remains an easy country to travel in and there are few barriers stopping you from wandering around pretty much how and as you choose. A slight loosening of the screws since Raúl Castro took office in February 2008 has allowed Cubans access to cell phones and entry into tourist hotels, meaning interaction with the locals is now simpler and often surprisingly candid.

For about 100 years it kept Columbus body in Cuban mahogany wood tomb, then it was off to Sevilla with the mahogany wood tomb and all. It has been special for all Cubans ever since the day it was built, even today it a beacon of hope and a time that it was grand. A must see for any visitor to Havana.

A bit of history
The order of Jesuits had been trying to establish themselves in Cuba since 1645 when the town council discussed the matter and the possibility of finding a home for the order. Their entry in the Island was formally requested in 1656, and in 1682, approx 37 thousand pesos in alms had been collected for the construction of their church. In 1727, a plot was granted for the school and the church, whose building works began in from 1748 to 1750. in addition, the Bishop Brother Gerónimo Valdés explained to the King of Spain that Havana’s Parroquial Mayor (main parish church), located on a corner of Obispo Street of Plaza de Armas, was ‘completely in ruins and its walls were crumbling’, and insisted on the need of another building ‘worthy of this city’. In the middle of the construction works, by royal decree, the Jesuits were expelled from every Spanish possession; consequently, they had to leave Cuba and their property as confiscated by the colonial Government. The works of the church were interrupted, as it was decided that the edifice would be dedicated to the main parish, which was completed in 1777. In 1782, the church was consecrated as the Cathedral of Havana, being officially confirmed in 1793. Two towers, different in size, one on each side of the building, emphasize its unique Baroque style, which, perhaps due to the rustic materials that were used, it is devoid of the profuse sculpted ornamentation so frequent in other cathedrals of the continent. Its square openings have been many times repeated on other Cuban buildings, this too being an element that departs from the classical edifices of those days. Early in the 19th century, the baroque altars were replaced by neoclassical ones, urged by Bishop Espada, a fervent admirer of Neoclassicism

If Hemingway loved it, there’s gotta be something about Havana – and there’s plenty. This delightful, wicked, cosmopolitan city is a cultural powerhouse, renowned for its musicality, mojitos and proud intellectualism. Get behind the wheel and cruise through Havana Vieja, puffing on a Cohiba and marvelling at a city on the verge of international stardom.

Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado, and the newer suburban districts. Old Havana, with its narrow streets and overhanging balconies, is the traditional centre of part of Havana’s commerce, industry, and entertainment, as well as being a residential area. To the north and west a newer section, centred on the uptown area known as Vedado, has become the rival of Old Havana for commercial activity and nightlife. Centro Habana, sometimes described as part of Vedado, is mainly a shopping district that lies between Vedado and Old Havana. The Capitolio Nacional marks the beginning of Centro Habana, a working class neighborhood. Chinatown and the Real Fabrica de Tabacos Partagás, one of Cuba’s oldest cigar factories is located in the area.

A third Havana is that of the more affluent residential and industrial districts that spread out mostly to the west. Among these is Marianao, one of the newer parts of the city, dating mainly from the 1920s. Some of the suburban exclusivity was lost after the revolution, many of the suburban homes having been nationalized by the Cuban government to serve as schools, hospitals, and government offices. Several private country clubs were converted to public recreational centres. Miramar located west of Vedado along the coast, remains Havana’s exclusive area; mansions, foreign embassies, diplomatic residences, upscale shops, and facilities for wealthy foreigners are common in the area. The International School of Havana is located in the Miramar neighborhood.

In the 1980s many parts of Old Havana, including the Plaza de Armas, became part of a projected 35-year multimillion-dollar restoration project. The government sought to instil in Cubans an appreciation of their past and also to make Havana more enticing to tourists in accordance with the government’s effort to boost tourism and thus increase foreign exchange. In the past ten years, with the assistance of foreign aid and under the support of local city historian Eusebio Leal Spengler, large parts of Habana Vieja have been renovated. The city is moving forward with their renovations, with most of the major plazas (Plaza Vieja, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza de San Francisco and Plaza de Armas) and major tourist streets (Obispo and Mercaderes) near completion.

Just on two-hour drive from Havana, gets you to Palma Rubia, a central point for the Archipelago de los Colorados, a cluster of small islands facing Florida, covered by lush greenery of tropical mangroves and bordered by sugar-white, soft-sand beaches. The most impressive retreat among these is Cayo Levisa. There is nowhere to stay except your own tent or twenty little bungalows, dotted among the pine trees and right on the beach. Photo by: Kristin Lyseggen

An outdoor bar is a central point, when the sun goes down and the friendly barmen keep the cocktails and Cuban music flowing. Other than the bar and grill, there is one restaurant and that is it. The only thing could disturb you are the day-trippers who arrive mid-morning and leave late afternoon. There is abundance of marine life and with snorkeling and scuba diving on tap – this area is hoe to one of the largest coral reefs in the world. Photo by: suavekeith

The great happiness of Cayo Levisa is that it is different from other Cuban resorts, which are crowded and block-booked by cheap vacations. This, by contrast, is practically your own private island. The island is just several hundred yards wide with sand washed by a warm clear aquamarine sea.The archipelago includes Cayo Paraiso, an even smaller little island reputed to be a favorite fishing haunt of Ernest Hemingway. Photo by: radiotelescopio

If you want to see a valley so magnificent that it gets you thinking about what the Garden of Eden might have looked like, travel to Cuba. Richly, fertile, with endless tobacco, sugarcane, and coffee plantations, the western province of Pinar del Rio is a blessed with a lush greenness, beautiful rivers, and natural springs. The pretty village of Vinales is nestled into the breathtaking Sierra de los Organos mountains, and the Vinales Valley is UNESCO-protected. Photo by: rikun1401

A glance from the road down to the town will tell you why: nothing can prepare you for your first view of the mogotes -tree-covered limestone knolls, molded by underground rivers, rising dramatically out of green landscape. Photo by: Paddockmuir

The beautiful countryside can be explored on foot, bike, or horse. The sleepy village of Vinales itself is a classic small Cuban country town, with a strip of colonial-style bungalows painted in various pastel shades overlooked by pines. Most of the houses are good deal smarter and the owners more house proud than the average Cuban campesino. This is the best place to sample rural Cuban hospitality, too: the people are friendly, sweet, courteous, and helpful. The valley is an outstanding example of natural beauty. Photo by: bno20

Varadero is a resort town in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, and one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean. Varadero is also called Playa Azul, meaning “blue beach” in Spanish. Varadero beach—some call it the world’s greatest beach—has long been the pride of Cuba, and a magnet for the rich and famous. Today, a broad range of hotels and resorts on this wide, sandy beach offer affordable vacations to please any pocketbook.

With hotels, shops and nightclubs spread out across the peninsula, there are areas where activity is more concentrated, but nowhere is there the buzz you might expect from the major holiday resort on the largest Caribbean island. None of this detracts from what most people come here for, namely the beach: a seemingly endless runway of blinding white sand. This is also the best place in Cuba for watersports, scuba diving, fishing and boat trips, with three marinas and two diving clubs offering a wide range of activities.

Its location on a narrow peninsula ensures that it is constantly cooled by tropical breezes.
But this white beach set against a backdrop of astonishing turquoise water and azure sky is not the only attraction in Matanzas province. The nearby cities of Cardenas and Matanzas (the provincial capital) are known for their art, history and culture. Southwest of Varadero, on the province’s Caribbean coast, is the Zapata Peninsula, famous for its ecotourism and history.

Many famous and infamous people have stayed in Varadero, like Mafia boss Al Capone. Unique events like the Internation Carnival, an initiative of Cubans and Foreigners started in the 1980s, were also liquidated. You have to eat the Cuban Food! The nightlife in Varadero is unique. You can visit Mambo club, Havana Cafe, La Rumba, La Bamba, Tropicana cabaret.

Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the name also refers to one of the municipalities of the city of Havana, Cuba, with the latter’s boundaries extending to the south and west beyond the original city. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments and a ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies and internal courtyards. Everywhere you look there is an unique image waiting to be recorded. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, La Habana Vieja is one of the oldest settlements in the America’s – full of charming, weather worn buildings and narrow, intriguing roadways. Lots of ancient building are under repair, but unfortunately, money is not enough, so that in many cases these are just superficial external repairs. They won’t last, and every summer storm is causing severe damages to the buildings.

Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean’s main centres for ship-building. According to the historical tradition, Havana was the last of the first seven villages founded by order of Diego Velazquez. One of his deputies, Panfilo de Narvaez, founded it on July 25th of 1514, baptizing it with the name of San Cristobal de La Havana, for the saint of the day and the indigenous district of Havana, where was established the village. On the XVII century, Old Havana received two Royal Graces and in 1665, the right to use its own shield, where were represented, with tree turrets, the castle (Castle of La Real Fuerza, Morro and La Punta) that then defended the city. After the urbanization of Plaza de Armas, this square stopped being the most important public space and it received the name of Plaza Vieja. It is a porticated square with a lot of historical building from four different centuries. The most important of them is which dates back from XVIIIth century. One of Havana’s prettiest courtyard fountains provides a backdrop to this romantic restaurant, that’s an Old Havana landmark. At the left corner on Empedrado street you will find “La Bodeguita Del Medio” home of ” mojito” drink cost CUC 4, this world famous and much copied restaurant immortalized by Hemingway, has served up classic Cuban dishes for 50 years.

Castillo de la Punta seen across the Havana channel. The city’s first settlement was constructed on the western edge of Havana Bay. The channel into Havana Bay is flanked by four imposing colonial forts constructed of coral-limestone. Two of these sit at the entrance to the channel – on the north the Castillo del Morro, which now houses a maritime museum, and on the south the Castillo de la Punta, which contains the Museum of Fortifications and Armaments and is also the site of the nightly canon-firing ceremony.
Old Havana still houses vestiges of its origins, such as the Alameda de Paula, next to the port, the Plaza de Armas and Cathedral Square, the Castillo de la Real Fuerza and the Morro and La Cabana castles, the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, the Palacio del Segundo Cabo, as well as the ruins of the walls that once surrounded it and the brick streets that have defied time in order to reveal all the greatness of the past.
