Located on the Pacific coast, the beach Manuel Antonio is of white coral sand and the best known beach in Costa Rica. With a small coral reef, it is considered as one of the nicest and most beautiful tropical beaches. It has been rated one of the top ten beaches in the world. Though small, it’s the most visited park in Costa Rica – so popular in fact that several years ago the park service imposed strict limits on the number of visitors to prevent the tiny natural area from being loved to death.

Looks just like a picture postcard Manuel Antonio Beach offers great opportunities for watersports including surfing, snorkeling, SCUBA diving especially during high season, when the water is clean. The beach is a half mile long, perfect white sand crescent bordered by deep green mangroves and palms.

You can explore the park’s several walking wide trails, which lead into a swatch of humid tropical forest. The area abounds with wildlife and in a days visit it is possible to see iguanas, raccoons and monkeys – about 350 squirrel monkeys live in the park, another 500 on its outer boundaries. You might also see marmosets, ocelots, sloths, anteaters, spectacled caimans in more remote riverside areas, and birds of every shape and color imaginable.

Lapa Rios is tucked away in the Osa peninsula, one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. Some 375, 000 acres make it one of the largest existing wet forests on the Pacific Coast of Mesoamerica. It boasts the who’s who of endangered species, ”from puma to ocelot and tapir, and the rain forest is teeming with wildlife.

The fourteen-bungalow lodge is all about sustainable development, supporting the environment and the local community – built to prove that ”a forest left standing is worth more than one cut down”. The main wooden lodge is thatched and furnished with wicker. Atop a wooden spiral staircase some 33 feet (10m) above the dining room, the observation deck offers views from tropical rain forest to the Pacific coastline. The local food is a revelation. Red snapper, burritos, or fajitas are served up in banana leaves. The smiling staff are jovial an eager to perfect their English. The fish seviche is tangy and fresh, tender pieces of fish blended with exotic fruit and lime juice, as well as sweet peppers and cilantro.

The bungalows are stunning, with wooden flooring, white and dark green linens, and romantic mosquito nets over the bed. Luxuries are kept to a bare minimum – with no television or phones, of course. Nip into the outside shower to hear the symphony from the jungle, or head to the cliff-top pool. Toucans parrots and scarlet macaws sit patiently while howler monkeys growl in the distance. The total impression in nature is both invigorating and beguiling. Location: Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.

Pacuare Lodge is a peaceful jungle destination, hidden in the depths of the rainforest and reachable only by raft. There is no time to panic because your guide is commanding you to “Paddle forward!”Exotic birds dart all around you. Pacuare Lodge sits on a bend in the river amid gorgeous gardens filled with tropical flowers. Each of its beautifully designed cabins has luxurious bathrooms, beds draped with mosquito nets, and is lit only by candles at night.

The lodge includes 8 garden view rooms, spread out through the lovely grounds. Each feels private and has pretty views from its small verandah. Inside, the thatched wooden constructions have a double bed, draped with a mosquito net, and a separate couch for lounging on (or as an extra bed). The bathroom is reached along a little corridor. There are also 4 river view suites, which offer far more room as well as a higher standard of design. Both types of room are equipped with good towels, plentiful organic, biodegradable toiletries, and lots of candles. You’ll be given a torch too, to make wandering the paths through the garden easier at night.

The food in the lodge is all organic. Meals are eaten in the main building: a tall, open-sided wooden palenque, right by the river’s edge, with tables on the terrace outside or inside where you can watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. Each table is given a big jug of juice and this is a lovely time of day to linger. Lunch offers 2 choices for each course: our filo pastry parcels filled with goats cheese, pork tenderloin, and roasted vegetables are delicious. Dinner is a real occasion and very romantic in the depths of the jungle.

Rafting is the means by which you arrive and leave. It’s great fun, even if you’ve never done it before. The guides are professional and take good care of you. Many bird species are visible in this part of the rainforest and you will see lots of them as you sit having breakfast on the terrace. Visit the Cabecar indigenous community, an unforgettable experience. It’s a stiff 2-hour hike through beautiful forest to reach the small remote group of traditionally built houses, and once there you’ll be greeted by the medicine man.

Location: Pacuare Lodge is set deep in the rainforest jungle alongside the Pacuare River in eastern Costa Rica. When to go: Open all year round. It rains more from May to September, and heavily in October. Nevertheless, rafting is possible all year round. The river might be slightly colder. On a sunny morning, Pacuare is paradise, and it would be a shame to see it only in cloud. However, this is the rainforest, so you have to be prepared for rain!

There are countless eco-lodges in Costa Rica. Few, however, live up to the environmental credentials as well as La Cusinga on the country’s Pacific Coast. All of the lodge’s cabins and furniture have been made using wood grown on-site in a sustainable plantation, electricity is provided by hydro and solar power, and food served there is harvested locally or caught fresh from the ocean. The place offers a supreme level of comfort and cooking, allowing you to relax in a glorious natural setting without feeling too guilty about the environmental impact of your actions. Photo by: velotech

The lodge has greatest asset is its location, perched on a hill overlooking a bay where every year thousands of humpback whales arrive to breed. The luxuries there are all organic. There are no hot tubes, but in the jungle you will find a crystal-clear pool, where you can swim alongside iridescent fish. Photo by: Bodhi Surf School

Sun loungers have no place on this beach, s stretch of chocolate-colored sand backed by a swaying border of palm trees, and entertainment comes courtesy of the startling sunsets, the rhythmic pulsing drone of a million cicadas, and the roars of howler monkeys. Photo by: velotech

The lodge is also well-positioned to explore some of Costa Rica‘s natural wonders. To the north is Cerro Chirripo, the country’s tallest mountain, and to the south is ecologically stunning Pargue Nacional Corcovado, one of the largest swaths of virgin rain forest outside of the Amazon Basin. Photo by: guysj01

Steeped in its own cloud forest reserve, El Silencio is a sophisticated retreat of just sixteen elegant villas. Each is poised on the jungle-clad hillside so that there are perfect views of mountain and forest through huge windows. The design is simple, using natural materials, and yet is utterly luxurious.

Expanses of polished wood and woven bamboo sit well with bathrooms of polished stone with rain-head showers. Step out onto the private balcony and there is an open hot tub. El Silencio is silent too. Whereas Costa Rica‘s most famous cloud forest at Monteverde attracts hordes and visitors, El Silencio offers the same breathtakingly wilderness but without the crowds.

When you visit El Silencio, you should use it as a base to go rafting, visit coffee plantations or see Poas volcano, with its steaming turquoise crater. But the magic of El Silencio lies in doing nothing – other than eating exquisite organic food created by chef Marco Gonzalez, and yielding to pampering the spa.
