The village of Mezek is situated at a distance of 11 km, southwest of Svilengrad, Bulgaria. The vilalge is located at the fringes of the Eastern Rhodopes. The fertile valley of the Maritsa River and its proximity to the century-used road from Europe to Asia Minor has turned Mezek and the region into an attractive settlement center, already since the distant antiquity. The name of the settlement that dates back to the ancient times was not occasionally chosen. Mezek has always been a center, crossroad, border (“meze” means “border”, “medium”). Important administrative functions have been focused on the settlement and it was a center, a crossroads in cultural, social, economic, military and political aspect.

The region of the village of Mezek has preserved some of the best maintained archeological monuments in Bulgarian land. The roads leading to the Thracian Tomb and the Medieval Fortress are good and this fact turns them into attractive sites for cultural tourism. The fortress has been declared architectural monument of culture of the category “with national importance” in State Gazzette N67/1968. The fortress walls surround an area of about 6.5 decares with the form of an irregular quadrangle and dimensions 110 x 60 m. They are fortified with round towers. The defense of the fortress was secured with nine towers.

The spring and the Antiquities Around it
Once upon a time an abundant spring gushed from the foot of the far slopes of the Rhodopes Mountain and supplied the whole region with refreshing moist. During the ages it was the factor which attracted people of the place. The oldest settlements in the area of Mezek were built around it. The legend tells that every year in spring, just for a short period of time, its water turns red. The local people believed that the spring had its “master”, who lived to the north on the top of Dervishka Mogila hill in the Sakar Mountain. He came here once a year and made sacrifice and the blood of the victim colored the water.

This year SPIRIT of Burgas is going to be even more exciting and memorable! And if you are just planning your vacation, make a note August 12th, 13th and 14th in your calendar. Inspired by the roaring success of last year’ edition, the festival is going to offer its fans an even more satisfying experience way beyond the three official festival days. Music lovers will be able to join a series of parties throughout the country as a workup for this major summer music event.

One of the headliners of this year’s festival is MOBY. The American dance guru will be performing in Bulgaria for the first time ever, as part of the tour of his new album “Destroyed”. MOBY and his band will be performing on the SPIRIT of Burgas main stage on August 13th, 2011. Besides Moby, SKUNK ANANSIE and DEFTONES are the two new names from the global music scene who have confirmed they are coming to the festival. The Brits from SKUNK ANANSIE, whose sound defied the idea of rock during the 1990s, will perform on the main stage on Saturday evening, August 13th.

The attractive Skin will entertain the audience at Burgas Central Beach at 9 pm on Saturday night with a 2-hour gig. Their appearance will happen on the same stage, immediately before Moby, who was the first to confirm his participation on SPIRIT of Burgas 2011. 24 hours later, on the last festival night and again on the main stage, we will see the Californian band DEFTONES. For more information on the festival and detailed lineup go to www.spiritofburgas.com

The Roman Epoch (1st-6th C.) represents a peculiar golden age in the development of the antique Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The Aqueduct of Philippopolis was built in order to supply the city with drinking water from the springs of the Rhodope Mountains. The total length of the construction is nearly 30 km. In the square of the west of Djumaya mosque the imposing remains of Philippopolis’s Ancient Stadium were discovered. The dimensions of this huge building are: length 1 000 Roman steps, width – 250 Roman steps. The Ancient Stadium accommodated about 30, 000 spectators and was one of the most significant architectural works in Philippopolis.

The Ancient Forum, the civic center of Philippopolis, covers an area of 20, 000 sq m in the heart of the ancient city. The Odeon is situated in the north-eastern corner of the ancient theatre building. This magnificent architectural specimen was built in the early second century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan. As an element of the city square of the Roman period, the building served as the city council chamber of Philippopolis. Today, the theatre is an attractive cultural venue, where modern arts interact with the intransient values of the past.

Ava Bar is one of the most beautiful airport lounges bars. It is an ideal for relaxing before a long awaited trip. Located in the city of Shumen, you certainly shouldn’t miss it in case you travel to Bulgaria. It is yet another proof that the Balkans area has much to offer.

Designed by Jovo Bozhinovski, the interior of Ava Bar is really different. He created an interesting contrast between the fully polished surfaces, providing an additional volume, and the columns that were left in concrete. The designer combined concrete and fiberglass with tightened ceilings by Barrisol to create a clean, minimalist atmosphere.
