The Stob Pyramids are located near the village of Stob, in the western approaches of the Rila Mountain, next to the Rila Monastery, Bulgaria. These are stone andearth formations, 30-40 m deep. The sediments are colored rusty-brown, reddish and dark yellow and, because of their location, the pyramids are especially beautiful at sunset or at moonlight. Many of the formations are crowned with rock “hats” – large stone blocks sizing 120 by 80 cm.

Under the influence of wind, rain and snow, the form of the pyramids changes, some of them vanish, the stone hats fall and new pyramids are born. The pyramids are separated in two distinct groups, called by the people with many different names – Kulite (”The Towers”), Chukite ( “The Rocky Peaks”), Samodivskite komini ( “The Samodivas Chimneys”) -the samodivas are mythical female creatures living in the forests, Neviastata (”The bridge”), etc. The most famous group is called “Svatovete” (”Thein-laws”).

According to the legend, many years ago a wedding procession from the nerby village of Kolibite took a young girl from the Stob village as a bride. The custom in those days was thet the bride must be chosen and bought by the relatives of the groom for him to marry her. Also the young couple must not know each other, so the girl had her face veiled.

When the wedding procession passed by the southern slope of bride reveling her. Outraged by the sinful act of the groom’s best men tried ti kiss her. Outraged sinful act of the groom’s best man, the in-laws turned to stone and stayed like this forever – magnificent with their stone hats…. There is also a legend about the doomed love between a Bulgarian girl and Turkish boy. They could never marry because of their different religions. Desperate, the girl threw herself off the rock and on this spot a pyramids formed which was called Neviastata (”The bride”). A mighty stone tower once existed on this site. It was told to be as high as the Rila Mountain and from its top one could see as far Macedonia. The tower was of great importance to the local towns and hamlets and despite their beauty the site where the pyramids now stand was then known as Kulata (”The tower”). But a strong earthquake cracked it crumblet.

The medieval Fortress Vida(Baba Vida) is situated on a big curve of the river Danube in the northeast part of the town Vidin. It is one of the most remarkable monuments of medieval architecture of residence in Bulgaria. The complex includes a museum and a theater stage.
It has been built in different historical periods from 3th century till the end of 19th century. The octagonal tower goes back to Roman times. The building is protected by inner and outer walls and is ringed by a moat filled with water from the Danube.

The castle was build on an area of 9.5 acres, sur-rounded by a moat, 12 metre wide and 6 metre deep. Today is 5 decrees, it comprises2 walls, between which an outside yard has formed, and the area fenced by the inner wall is built-up with arched premises attached to it.

The castle towers were built on the inner wall. Four of them occupied the four corners pointing to the four directions north, south, east, west. It is a wooden bridge that went up and down.

The fortress has been used as location for many Bulgarian and foreign film productions, but unfortunately, at present, only a third of its area is accessible to tourists.

When you visit this charming country you should not miss the local cuisine. Bulgaria offers cuisine with its own characteristics and phenomenal variety. It is a combination between of the Slavic, Greek and Turkish cuisines. The Bulgarian cuisine is lots of onion, garlic and many seasonings like red and black pepper, pimento, bay leaves, and savory. The cooking in Bulgarian cuisine usually includes roasting, boiling and frying.

This cuisine also is very famous with local first-quality Bulgarian wines. The white wines are characterized by a tingling taste and a delicate aroma. Well-known labels include Misket, Traminer, Dimyat and Riesling. The most popular of red wines include Mavrud, Gamza, Merlot and Cabernet. The salad and rakia (Bulgarian spirit schnapps made from grapes) are the traditional start to the meal. Here I introduce you with some of the most popular Bulgarian dishes:

Shopska salad – chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and peppers sprinkled with “sirene” (Bulgarian white cheese), parsley, vinegar, sunflower oil and salt. Serve in the shape of a pyramid, top with chopped parsley and grated cheese.
Shkembe chorba- tripe soup with garlic, vinegar and chilli, quite tasty if you can bring yourself to try it
Tarator – cold yoghurt and cucumber soup and we are recommending you
Banitsa – is one of the most popular and typical Bulgarian dishes, more of a breakfast or snack thing than a main course. There are many shapes and varieties: with cheese, spinach or pumpkins (tikvenik) and etc.
Sarmi– a mixture of minced meat and rice, rolled in grape vine or sauerkraut leaves. The meal is baked in the spiced juice of the canned grape vine leaves (or sauerkraut juice) and this is where the unique taste comes from.
Musaka – it is cooked from minced meat and potatoes, but there is also a vegetarian option.
Kavarma – aromatic harmony of meat – beef, chicken, pork, or lamb, mushrooms, union, tomatoes, peppers, carrots… It is cooked and served in a clay pot and so be careful, usually it is served straight after cooking and is very hot.
Giuveche – it contains meat or sausages, vegetables, cheese and eggs. Always cooked and served in a pot, which is hot.
Kapama – a very rich dish made of at least 3 kinds of meat, rice and sauerkraut. Takes quite a lot of time to be prepared, but believe me, waiting is worth… It’s a perfect winter dish, very good with lots of red wine.
Bob chorba – traditional bean soup with plenty of herbs
Chushki byurek – fried peppers stuffed with egg and cheese
Luttennitza – this is a Bulgarian type of salsa
Cheverme – believe me it is something that you should not miss in the Rhodope Mountains.

During the Ottoman slavery the monastery was burned out twice and in the 17th century it was built at the place where it is now. The present Dryanovo Monastery dates back to 1845.
The main church of that time had a single nave and was half-hidden in the ground. It was standing very near to the present-day church; besides it, there was also a secondary shrine.
Relics of the April epopee are preserved in the monastery museum today, along with some valuable icons.
