Hallstatt is a small picturesque village around 80 km away from Salzburg and is one of the most visited towns in Austria (beside Salzburg and Vienna). Surrounded by steep mountains, situated on the shores of Lake Hallstatt, it is described as one of the most picturesque towns in all of Europe. Since more than 7000 years people are living here. It’s a major archeological landmark and since 1996 is recognized by the UNESCO as world heritage.

 
Visitors to Hallstatt and vicinity will find ancient salt mines, ice caves, culture museums and more. The Kirche St. Leopold is an extraordinary monument, which sits high atop the Baumgartner Hohe at the city outskirts. Locals people jokingly say to this splendid site as ‘Mount Lemon‘, because of the church’s shining gilded dome that beckons from afar. This new masterpiece was built by architect Otto Wagner from 1903–07 on the grounds of Vienna’s Steinhof psychiatric hospital. Planned for the use of patients, many of the church’s salient design features fascinatingly address the special concern for hygiene prevalent at the time.

The church interior was entirely cloth in tiles to allow for easy cleaning; the pews were given rounded edges to minimize injuries; and holy water dispensed by a drip rather than the traditional stoup, for fear of infection.

The ornamentation of the Kirche St Leopold encapsulates the quintessential spirit of the Jugendstil, while Otto Wagner’s open floor plan foreshadows the onset of modernism. You will never miss the beautiful stained glass windows and mosaics by artist Koloman Moser, one of the founders of the Vienna Secession.

The Semmering Railroad – located in Austria this line connects the cities of Gloggnitz and Muerzzuschlag, it’s a section of the southern line called -Suedbahn. It is still fully functional as a part of the former Austrian Southhern Railway which is now part of the Austrian Federal Railways.

The Semmering Railway, built over 41 km of high mountains between 1848 and 1854, is one of the greatest feats of civil engineering. Difference of 460 m; on 60% of its length the steepness is 20-25‰. And 16% exhibit a curvature radius of only 190 m.

The main tunnel, 1,430 meters long, at the time considered the most famous construction of its kind and 15 other tunnels.

The Eisriesenwelt is a natural limestone ice cave located in Austria, about 40 km south of Salzburg. It is the largest ice cave in the world, extending more than 42 km of tunnels and chambers. Only the first kilometer, the area that tourists are allowed to visit, is covered in ice. The rest of the cave is made of limestone. Entry to the caves is regulated and a 75-minute tour takes in several immense caverns containing elaborate ice formations and frozen waterfalls.

Eisriesenwelt Cave was created by the Salzach River as it flowed through the mountain eroding into the mountain creating passageways. Smooth walls, stalactites, stalagmites, domes, frozen waterfalls, and other ice formations have shaped a crystalline world that deserves a 5-star rating on any list of natural tourist attractions. 

The cave is open to tourists from May 1st until October 26th every year. The guided 75-minute tours start at 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. in July and August). Temperatures inside the cave are usually averaging 0° C or below and don’t make the mistake of wearing a t-shirt and shorts or a sundress. Instead, wear long trousers and bring a jacket or warm sweater. Photography is not permitted once visitors are inside the cave.

Hofburg Palace is located in the heart of the city of Vienna. The Palace has four wings and a two-story hall, painted in white and gold and filled with portraits of the Haspsburg Dynasty members.

The new building was partly built on the existing foundations of the chateau de plaisance that had been destroyed by the Turks.

Plague Monument in Vienna, Austria, Central Europa. Elegantly displayed in the center of Graben Square in Vienna, Austria is the Pestsaule statue, a memorial to those Vienna citizens that were lost to the plague. Designed in the structure are beautiful angels on clouds and a trinity sculpture at the top.

The disease is believed to have been bubonic plague  ,carried by fleas associated with the black rat and other rodents.The Pestsaule is one statue to remember the horrible plague and it stands at approximately sixty-nine feet high.

The monument was erected in 1693 at the behest of the Emperor Leopold I to mark the emergence of the city from the disastrous plague of 1679. Arranged around the statue of Mary, Mother of God are six saints, all intercessors against the plague.

The Belvedere is a baroque palace complex built by Prince Eugene of Savoy in the 3rd district of Vienna, south-east of the city centre. The Belvedere Palace has always been regarded as one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in Europe. The Palaces’ architecture and interior design are typical for Rococo style.

The Belvedere’s main attraction is the collection of 19th- and 20th-century Austrian paintings, centering on the work of Vienna. Designed as a summer palace for Prince Eugene of Savoy, it was a sumptuous, gilded retreat for princes, dukes and archdukes of the Hapsburg dynasty.

Today, they house three excellent art galleries. The parks surrounding the Belvedere still give the place a quiet and relaxing atmosphere.

The design was done by one of the two most famous architects of Austrian Baroque: Johann Lukas von Hidebrandt(1668 to 1745) – the other being Johann Bernhard Fisher von Erlach.

It is an elongated single storey building consisting of a seven-axial central projection, two wings and two corner pavilions. 
This baroque architectural jewel consists of two palaces (Upper and Lower Belvedere).: The upper palace displays a wealthof architectural invention in its facade, avoiding the main design problems common to palaces.

The next floor is centered around a gigantic Marble Hall covered with trompe l’oeil frescoes, while down in the Lower Belvedere palace, there are more 17th-century salons, including the Grotesque Room painted by Jonas Drentwett.

Alt-erlaa is a social housing complex in Vienna, very functional and part of it has an eco sense! The complex is built between 1973 and 1985. Each building has 27 floors and accommodates approximately 10?000 low-income residents. Each block is topped with outdoor swimming pool and a lot of greenery.
