You’ll get a dose of cognitive dissonance arriving at Jicaro Island. There are palm trees and thatched roofs, even a shadowy volcano in the distance, but the air has none of the tropical tang you’d expect, and there are no waves or powdery shores. That’s because Jicaro is located on Lake Nicaragua, a freshwater lake 10 minutes by boat from the colonial town of Granada. The island’s single acre is occupied by Jicaro Island Ecolodge, a hotel as sensitive to the environment as it is easy on the eyes.

Jicaro Island Ecolodge offers nine casitas on the island, all have lake views and are within a short walk from the pool, restaurant, and wellness center. The casitas are two stories, with a private bedroom and a king size bed on the second floor; and on the first floor, a spacious living area that connects to an outside deck overlooking the lake. The casitas and the furniture are made locally from Rainforest Alliance certified wood. Each casita is equipped with mosquito netting and ceiling fans, and the large doors and windows can all be opened for cross ventilation. Most notably, the oversized hammock and comfy furniture of the deck will invite you to relax and feel the peace of this magical lake. Early morning coffee and late afternoon ¨sundowner¨ delivery service is available upon request.

Jicaro is a place where you can find the perfect combination of relaxation and exploration. After a day of lounging in your private hammock or indulging in a rejuvenating massage in the wellness center, you might want to adventure out on one of our signature tours. Explore some of the tours offering varied activities ranging from easy to challenging, and are all accompanied by a private guide who will teach you about local flora and fauna, as well as Nicaraguan history, culture and day-to-day living.

All of your meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included in the room rate. Breakfast and lunch are served a la carte and dinner is a choice of fresh daily specials created by our chef. Jicaro has an open kitchen right next to the restaurant, so it is a real treat to watch the chef prepare your dinner. The menu has plenty of options and prides itself on the selection of fresh fish from the lake and nearby ocean, local vegetables and fruit, and locally farmed chicken and beef. We believe that when you have fresh, tasty ingredients you can cook very simply and the food will be extraordinary.

Jicaro is the ideal location for people who want to reconnect with themselves and leave their hectic lives behind for a few days. Besides Yoga sessions and a variety of massage and wellness treatments, a visitor to the island will be enticed by the fresh and healthy local cuisine, the warmth of the local staff and the authenticity of the overall experience. The Yoga deck looks out over the lake and towards the Mombacho volcano; it is a spot that inspires serenity and tranquility.

Seaside Cabanas Hotel is perched on the beach on the beautiful Island of Caye Caulker, just 22 miles from Belize city. The hotel architecture blends Belizean and Mexican styles with the use of thatch, local woods and bright colours. The interiors are cool and modern with artwork from Belize and other parts of the Caribbean. Overall the atmosphere is fun, tropical and uniquely Caye Caulker. The hotel is proud to offer one of the few freshwater swimming pools on the island, as well as 16 air-conditioned rooms, a two-story bar with beautiful thatched palapa roof, a tour and travel service and a gift shop. All of this is just a shells throw away from the world’s second largest barrier reef.

Caye Caulker has a very quaint old-style Caribbean feel to it. Wooden piers run all along its beaches and many buildings are still constructed from brightly painted clapboard. The Caye was originally covered in coconut plantations and Lobster fishing is one of the main sources of income. Today, fishermen can still be seen bringing in their catch of the day. Deliciously prepared lobster is served in many of the island’s restaurants at a very reasonable price – don’t miss it. There are numerous ways to spend your lazy days on Caye Caulker. A popular hang-out is the ‘Split’ – a natural break in the island caused by wave action and enlarged by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. The swimming and sunbathing is great there and is a lively beach bar should you need some refreshment.

The beautiful barrier reef is only a 5 minute boat ride away from shore and there are numerous ways to enjoy the amazing underwater scenery. You can take a snorkel trip with a licensed tour guide who will point out all the amazing wildlife, including friendly stingrays and nurse sharks and many species of corals and tropical fish. If you are very lucky you may even spot a turtle or dolphin. Another popular trip takes you to watch rare and protected manatees in their natural habitat. Water sports are also popular there and you can have a go at sea kayaking, sailing and windsurfing. There are also excellent fishing locations around the Caye. Half or full day trips can be arranged where you could expect to land snapper, kingfish, barracuda and tarpon.

Butterflies are among the most fascinating and beautiful animals; even people who care not for insects in general usually have an affection for these winged wonders. They live nearly everywhere – from gardens and forests and mountains to acid bogs and frozen arctic tundra. I present you some of the most amazing butterflies in the world.

Butterfly 88
Scientist name: Diaethria species. This is one of most exotic butterflies that are considered natural treasures of the sub-tropical Amazon rainforest. The Diaethria species are known as the 88 butterfly because many have the number 88 on their underside wings. A member of the Callicorini family, the Diaethria genus is the third most diverse genus.

Transparent butterfly
Also known as the Glasswing butterfly, it is a strange species of butterfly, belonging to the Nymphalidae family that is the most diverse family of butterflies. Usually medium sized to large butterflies, Transparent butterfly can be found from Mexico to Panama. The glassy wings work as a means of camouflage, helping the butterfly to better blend in the environment and as a result avoid more effectively any potential predators.

Great Mormon
Scientist name: Papilio memnon. It is a large butterfly with a wing span of up to 135mm and with contrasting colors that belongs to the Swallowtail family. There are at least 550 species, and though the majority are tropical, members of the family are found on all continents except Antarctica but it’s fairly common in Singapore. The male has one form, black with a dusting of blue on the upper side of the wings. The female, however has up to 7 forms and is much more splendid from the male.

Blue Morpho
Scientist name: Morpho Menelaus. The Blue Morpho Butterfly is a species of neotropical butterfly that has brilliant blue wings (the females are not as brilliantly colored as the males and have a brown edge with white spots surrounding the iridescent blue area). A Morpho butterfly may be one of over 80 species of butterflies in the genus Morpho. It is an iridescent blue butterfly that lives in rainforests of South and Central America, including Brazil, Costa Rica, and Venezuela. Morphos range in wingspan from the 7.5 cm to the imposing 20 cm.

Verana Hotel is an intimate boutique hotel on Mexico‘s Pacific coast, tucked in a remote hillside jungle just thirty miles south of Puerto Vallarta and accessible only by boat. Verana boasts indulgently private accommodations, a blend of old-world and modern designs and a philosophy of simple luxuries—all set against a backdrop of stunning water and mountain views. The whole experience begin when you disembark onto the hotel’s small, private pier. A few stone steps lead to the full-service jungle spa, which offers aqua-therapy, scrubs, massages and the like, many of which incorporate locally grown plants.

Just next to the spa center, is the one of the two hotel’s restaurant, provding lunchtime service overlooking the bay, a perfect spot to enjoy the sights, while enjoying a stellar chef’s menu, updated daily. A weekday menu might include fresh-baked bread with roasted smoked eggplant puree, guajillo chile-encrusted octopus, and caramelized pineapple with fresh strawberries and yogurt citrus sorbet.

To get to the hotel’s rooms, guests will be guided through a 15-minute jungle route up, winding stone steps to the hotel proper. Along the way, guests pass by a dramatic, eight-foot-tall urn, as well as rustic busts made in the likeness of Verana’s owners. To be more specific there are no rooms, just beautifully simple, individually-designed villas dotting the hillside combine the traditional architecture with modern design.

The hotel’s lush natural surroundings inspired the overall color palette, and its decor (all of which had to be brought uphill by man or mule) mixes streamlined, contemporary pieces with artisan-made furniture and Mexican handicrafts, carefully selected by owners, former movie set builder Heinz Legler and set decorator Veronique Lievre. Visitors can choose from open villas with traditional thatched roofs, few to zero walls and rock floors, or more modern, enclosed villas with dramatic walls of steel-framed windows overlooking the bay. The hotel’s second restaurant and spa location blend in up here as well, where guests meet nightly for a casual cocktail hour at the outdoor bar, enjoying contemporary designs and stellar service, followed by impeccable dinners—yes, once again, overlooking the bay.

If you get tired of laying down on the pool or observing the sky and ocean downhilll, or have had enough of all those pesky, relaxing spa treatments, Verana also offers private and group yoga classes, kayaking, whale and bird watching excursions, an outdoor couples starlit bath. The nearby town of Yelapa is just a twenty minute hike away, with a long, lovely beach and a local celebrity of sorts—”the cake lady” who walks up and down the beach carrying delicious cakes and pies on her head for sale. Plan accordingly though, the trail between Yelapa and Verana is impassible when the tide is in. Verana is open to the public 1 November-31 July each year, rack rates start at $380 a night.

The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort is situated on the northeastern corridor of the island of Puerto Rico, at the foot of the El Yunque National Forest. This luxurious resort is surrounded by 5,000 acre of preserved land. The El Yunque National Rain Forest is the only tropical national forest on U.S. soil and was established as a National Park in 1906. More than 100 billion gallons of rain fall there each year, creating a lush forest with plants and animals of incredible variety. Plant life is represented with over 240 species of trees, 50 species of ferns, 20 varieties of wild orchids and a large multitude of flowers.

Ian Fleming is a British author who has created a fictional private paradise reminiscent of James Bond at GoldenEye. The land is Jamaican north-coast property which he bought in 1946. The founder of Island Records, Chris Blackwell, has owned the home and 15 surrounding acres since 1976, and later turned it into a six-villa hotel before closing it two and a half years ago. Nowadays Mr. Blackwell has reopened the property in expanded form, as a 52-acre resort with 22 units, each with an outdoor shower and touch-screen sound system loaded with Island Records-produced music. There are also two new restaurants serve local cuisine, featuring ackee and saltfish for breakfast. The Jamaican Olympic triathlete Iona Wynter is in charge of activities; she combines fitness and fun in stretch and snorkel classes, moonlight yoga and leg and ab workouts designed to buff those Jet Skiing muscles. Over-lagoon suites start at $536.

The magnificent Hacienda Xcanatun was originally constructed in the mid 18th century by one of the most notable families in the Yucatan. All rooms are comfortable, carefully and beautifully decorated in a contemporary style and a beautiful design.

The Ayoloco Glaciar is situated in the valley ”La Joya”, in Mexico. During the rainy period and after winter storms is possible to find snow and ice near Ayoloco camping zones. The route is usually taken in 2 days the first one up to Ayoloco camping zone (3-6 hrs) and the other one to the summit (3-5 hrs) and down (3-5 hrs). The single push from “La Joya” to the summit will take about 12-14 hrs round trip. The glacier may look easy and with no dangers at all, but it can be very dangerous especially in the rainy season and after big winter storms, avalanches can happen on it.

While you climb Ayoloco Glacier, you may need a place to stay for the night or to relax a few hours in the day. There are to options for rest if you have to climb this glacier: the first one is Ayoloco hut, its official name I think is “Otis Mcallister”. This hut can hold 6 people and some tents outside it, be sure to leave your food in a safe place, there are lots of mice in the area. The second one is “Las Cruces” camping spot.

From both camping spots you have to head to the center of the glacier, try to go a little to the right but not to close to the headwall, rockfall can happen at all times (if your idea is to ice climb the Ayoloco couloir, you will have to go close to the headwall), from the glacier head up until you reach the belly, and from there you have to follow the same directions as in the “Arista del Sol” route. It’s possible to find water on this route almost year around on the valley just below “La Joya” and it’s usual to find some little streams around “Las Cruces” and Ayoloco camping zones however this creeks are seasonal, depending on the amount of snow on the mountain. I strongly recommend treating all water that you get from these streams.
