What a hotel!? Tree house set 13 meters above a Swedish public park, with rope ladder access only. That i say unusual place to stay! The idea, first conjured up by the artist Mikael Genberg seven years ago and it is said to be the smallest of its kind. It is designed for a cosy couple, and can hold no more than two or so people. If you want to visit that place the best time to do it is the summer. It’s open on April 1st of each year, but office is open for booking all seasons.

“The idea came to me in 1999. I had just finished working on a tree house hotel and was in the process of producing an underwater hotel when I saw an article in Expressen: ‘Now Sweden goes for the moon’. My idea was not realistic at all. But it kept coming back to me and by August 2003 I had made quite a few enquiries. Ever since then it has grown into far more than an artwork,” said the artist Mikael Genberg .

Whether you call it Bauhaus or International Style architecture, Tel Aviv is still the only city in the world that houses such a large collection of buildings designed in this style. It evolved in Germany in the 1920’s, came to an abrupt end (in Germany) with the Nazi’s rise to power and continued to develop in the U.S. and elsewhere. In Tel Aviv of the 1930’s, Bauhaus architecture flourished, as is evidenced by many of the wonderful buildings that line the city’s streets. Since the initial publication of this issue, the “White City of Tel Aviv” has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. When UNESCO added Tel Aviv’s White City to the World Heritage List of sites designated for preservation, it made white fashionable and desireable. Thanks to the White City’s historical designation, that default color of Israeli architecture is now identified with quality.

“This is a trend that began about 15 years ago as part of Tel Aviv’s branding as the White City,” says architect Sharon Rotbard, author of the books “White City, Black City” and “Avraham Yaski: Concrete Architecture.” “In the mid-1990s, Ram Carmi began to talk about white architecture at the same time that architects began whitewashing raw concrete structures in conjunction with Brutalist architecture – for example, the planned Amal School. Eldar Sharon also painted white the Coor Building – now the Beit Amot Hamishpat Building – which he planned with his father, Arieh Sharon.

“When French architect Jean Nouvel visited Israel, he suggested making Tel Aviv a symphony of white, painting all the buildings in shades of white, and strengthening its identity as the White City, just as Jerusalem is identified with stone,” Rotbard adds.

Madrid Barajas Airport opened in 1933 and was subsequently extended several times. By the early ‘90s, the existing airport had become over-stretched and the need for a terminal, satellite, ancillary buildings and two new runways in the north-west was identified. The client, the Spanish National Airports Authority (AENA) initiated an international competition which was won by a consortium of Richard Rogers Partnership, the Spanish practice Estudio Lamela and two engineering companies TPS and Initec in 1997. The design was chosen for it simplicity, adaptability and flexibility, allowing for future changes and extensions.
As a 21st-century airport, the New Terminal at Barajas will be efficient, simple, economic and functional, accommodating anticipated growth in passenger traffic, which could be up to 35 million per annum in 2010 and 50 million in 2020, double the capacity of the old airport.

The new NAT is located only three kilometres from the old terminals and, after public transportation links have been completed, will be only 15 minutes by underground from the city centre, enhancing Madrid’s prominence as a major cosmopolitan centre and prime transport hub. When the new Barajas Airport is fully operational, there will be a workforce of 20,000 on site each day.

The New Terminal Building should quickly adapt to economic and social changes and have the capacity to implement new technologies, whilst respecting the environment.

Aims of The DESIGN are:

Integration into the landscape

Airport terminals are normally surrounded by secondary elements (car parks, power plants etc.) that obscure orientation through the airport. In this design, such structures are integrated into the main building, taking into account the topography of the local area. The canyons – large courtyards full of daylight – establish a sequence that incorporates the landscape into the interior space.

Energy

Despite the extreme heat of summer in Madrid, the design team were committed to the use of passive environmental systems wherever possible, while maximising transparency and views towards the aircraft and the mountains beyond. The building benefits from a north-south orientation with the primary facades facing east and west – the optimum layout for protecting the building against solar gain. The facades are protected by a combination of deep roof overhangs and external shading. A low energy displacement ventilation system is used in the pier, and elsewhere a more conventional high velocity system is used. Given the multi-level section, a strategy was also needed to bring natural light down into the lower levels. The solution is a series of light-filled ‘canyons’. The canyons are spectacular full-height spaces, spanned by bridges in which arriving and departing passengers, though segregated, can share the drama of the imposing space.

Spatial Clarity

Barajas is a model of legibility, with a straightforward linear diagram and a clear progression of spaces for departing and arriving passengers. The accommodation is distributed over six floors; three above ground for check-in, security, boarding and baggage reclaim, and three underground levels for maintenance, baggage processing and transferring passengers between buildings. The flow of passengers starts in the forecourt and goes through the check-in counters and the security control until the boarding lounge.

Flexibility

The layout proposed is adaptable to all activities at the airport, maintaining a strong architectural identity through all stages of the project, with a view to the need for potential extensions of the buildings.

Take a short trip to discover the second largest city in Bulgaria – Plovdiv situated on three hills rising inic the Thracian plain and washed by the quietly flowing waters of Maritza River. An ancient crossroads between East and West, Plovdiv has preserved unique treasure from it’s 24 centuries long history. Brilliant examples of the Bulgarian National Revival Period are preserved here. The ethnographic Museum, Churches and the street of folk arts and crafts are major landmark of the Old Town followed by lunch and trip to Bachkovo Monastery. It was mostly destroyed by the Turks in the 14th century and rebuilt a century later. The main treasure of the monastery is a miracle working icon Sveta Bogorodica which is said to heal the sick.

Entering its second year as the #1 public golf course in Maine according to Golfweek Magazine and having just been listed as the only New England course on Golf Digest’s Best New Public Over $75 top 10 list, the highly acclaimed Sunday River Golf Club opened all 18 holes on Saturday.

World-renowned course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr, designed Sunday River Golf Club, located next to Sunday River Ski Resort. In addition to the accolades from Golfweek and Golf Digest, Golfstyles New England named the Sunday River Golf Club their Public Course of the Year for 2007.

Early season greens fees including cart are currently at $79 per person and both the driving range and practice green are open. Stay and play packages through Memorial Day weekend start at $89 per person per night including lodging and a round of golf with cart.

With nearby ski trails still dotted with snow, two prominent tournaments are on their way to the Sunday River Golf Club in May. The New England PGA’s Maine Chapter is holding their 2nd Pro-Am and the Women’s Maine State Golf Association will be visiting for their tournament.

The Sunday River Golf Club has 18 self-contained fairways that the Maine State Golf Association has said are “among the widest in Maine”. There are four sets of tees on each hole that are set at varying elevations and angles to the fairways.

Spread across a 350-acre site that sits on a northwest-facing hillside with sweeping views across the Sunday River Valley to the Mahoosuc Mountain Range, the course plays to 7,130 yards from the championship tees. The 10,000 square foot clubhouse is made of log and stone and features a deck with sweeping views, an indoor/outdoor stone fireplace, a stone-faced bar, woodcarvings and Old Hickory furniture. A full practice facility includes a driving range with multiple target greens and an expansive putting green, located adjacent to the clubhouse.

Robert Trent Jones, Jr. has designed courses around the world, including the famed Links at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach, CA. The highly acclaimed course at Sunday River’s sister resort, Sugarloaf/USA, is also a Trent Jones, Jr. design.

Since their discovery in the late 1800s, visitors have travelled on horseback, by boat, and later by car, to benefit from the healing powers of Harrison Hot Springs and to stay in the renowned resort hotel overlooking Harrison Lake .
Rich in history and surrounded by breathtaking scenery, Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa was a natural acquisition by Delaware North Companies in fall 2002. The company is pleased to have made the resort the latest member of its family of world-class park, resort and tourism properties.

“Harrison is a jewel waiting for a grand vision, experience, and the capital required to develop it sensitively and bring it to the level of an international resort destination,” says new General Manager Donald Ponniah.

Ponniah, most recently at the corporation’s Tenaya Lodge in Yosemite, CA, jumped at the chance to move to British Columbia . “BC is truly ’supernatural.’ When we’ve completed our renovation and restoration work, Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa will be a must-stay destination for its rich history, healing springs, scenic location and top caliber resort accommodations.”

According to Ponniah, the “new” vision for Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa encompasses a three to six-year $16 million development and renovation program including:

* A grand redesign to create an inspiring resort entrance and lobby overlooking magnificent Harrison Lake
* A stylish, new cafe restaurant with an outdoor patio reaching out to a new lakeside pathway
* Total $3 million expansion of the Healing Springs Spa and its luxurious services
* High-quality guest room and furnishing upgrades with a themed connection to the rugged alpine, evergreens and beautiful natural setting of Harrison Lake
* Renovations and improvements to the resort’s four hot springs-fed indoor and outdoor pools
* Attractive new shops, a renovated second-level Lakeside Cafe, and lounge and public areas with a welcoming new look
* A brand new public Interpretive Centre that celebrates history and tradition at the actual source of the hot springs , just a 10-minute hike along the lake

“When we’re completed,” Ponniah adds. “We believe Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa will be considered one of the finest resorts in North America.”

Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa is located in southwest British Columbia, Canada, 90 miles east of Vancouver . The resort features four hot springs-fed pools, hundreds of guest rooms, a world-class spa, restaurants, shops, convention and meeting rooms, and visitor facilities.
Aeromexico will offer the first daily non-stop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Mexico City (MEX) with continuing service to Guadalajara (GDL). From Mexico City, travelers will be able to connect to major Mexican destinations including Acapulco, Oaxaca, Veracruz and others.

“We welcome Aeromexico to the Northwest,” said Port of Seattle Commission President John Creighton. “Mexico City is an important destination for business and leisure travelers from the Puget Sound area. We are pleased that the airline will provide this daily non-stop flight which will serve to further strengthen business and cultural ties between Washington and Mexico.”

“Mexico is one of Washington’s largest trade partners and I look forward to flying this new route on my trade mission to Mexico and Guadalajara this summer,” said Governor Chris Gregoire. “I met with the CEO of Aeromexico when he visited last summer and discussed with him the benefits of a direct flight between Seattle and Mexico, including the ability to create more trade and cultural opportunities.”

Aeromexico will fly new generation Boeing 737-700s. The first in-coming flight will arrive on the evening of July 3rd and the first flight will depart on the morning of July 4th. Aeromexico will arrive and depart from Sea-Tac’s South Satellite.

“During the last several years, the Port invested more than $4 billion in improving facilities and infrastructure at Sea-Tac Airport,” said Tay Yoshitani, the Port’s CEO. “Just two months ago, we announced that Air France will begin serving Seattle in June and now we’re able to announce that Aeromexico will start service in July – this demonstrates that the investments made in the airport were on target.”

“Our new service will also be very attractive to the substantial Hispanic market in the Pacific Northwest, providing convenient access and connections to family and friends throughout Mexico,” said Carlos De Uriarte, Aeromexico vice president of sales and marketing, USA and Canada.

Aeromexico is a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, which provides connections and benefits with several airlines serving Sea-Tac.
