Mafia is a sleepy untouched retreat from the real world, and a slice of the old Swahili Coast, where people go about their lives simply and traditionally. It is part of Spice Islands, but is governed from the mainland. It is a cluster of one main island – 48 km long and numerous tiny ones, and is now the site of the largest marine park in the Indian Ocean, with fine corals. Photo by: booniekathrin

For a small island like this one, the sea rules. Every imagine form of boat is crafted locally – from large ocean going dhows to smaller masha or fishing boats or canoes. The main way of life is fishing and the waters are rich for both fishermen and divers. Coconuts and cashews are key cash crops, but the price of coconuts on the world markets has fallen in recent years and fishing has become more commercially viable. Photo by: booniekathrin

Mafia is also emerged as the striking raffia mats that the women of the island weave, often plaiting as they stroll along. This is an under-developed place, and the infrastructure is very poor – there is only electricity around the main tourist areas and very few houses have running water. Most locals get around on foot or bicycle. Photo by: DirectorUzi

Mafia has seen Portuguese, German and British occupation and this history has resulted in shifting mixed population. Photo by: booniekathrin

When to go: July to October and December to March. Population: 40,801. How to get there: Small aircraft from Dar es Salaam or by road from Dar es Salaam to Kisiju and then boat to Mafia. Photo by: wayne bremser //

Margarita Island is a Venezuelan island, situated in the Caribbean Sea with wonderful climate, excellent scuba diving and completely gorgeous beaches! The beautifully beaches of Isla Margarita also offer perfect conditions for windsurfing and other water sports.

This paradise island has a dramatic architecture with high mountains framed by white beaches which fells away towards the turquoise-green water. More and more people are starting to discover the benefits of this Caribbean beauty. Tourism on Margarita Island is increasing year on year. The breathtaking scenery and excellent hotels and nightlife and duty-free shopping are all attracting foreigners.

The island of Margarita had clear and sunny weather 340 days of the year! This means 93.2 % of the days with 6 hours of sun or more!Isla Margarita is like a desert island. There have been years when the island had no measurable rain for several months. The daytimes temperatures is on the average of 30ºC (86ºF) and the nights is never below 20ºC (68ºF). Even in the summer months when the temperature may reach 99F (36C) the cooling breezes keep the climate very liveable.

The isle has two major advantages - out of the hurricane belt making it a year-round destination and no rainy season where it ceaselessly rains for days. There are at least 50 unique and magnificent margarita beaches, scattered along a 106 miles of coastline! The wind sometimes rise high so there is reason to keep an eye on the red flag. The Margarita Island beaches is not crowded even at peak season.

The transport there is extremely cheap and you can easily rent a taxi a whole day. This is because the price of petrol is extremely low, about $0.05/litre! The buses operate to the most of the places in daytime. The island also offers some excellent Caribbean scuba diving and Caribbean snorkeling. There are some really good snorkeling and scuba diving on and around Isla de Margarita. But the island has many wild dive places for exploring.

Say Bali, Indonesia and think of paradise. That’s true! There are stunning sunsets, sculpted rice terraces and a beautiful temple on almost every corner. There’re great surfing clubs and lovely clubs for those of you who seek for bohemian lifestyle.

But there’s nothing like the Scared Monkey Forest Sanctuary. To visit it drive an hour north of Kuta Beach, to the town of Ubud, which is the cultural heart of Bali. The monkeys live in a dense, jungley stretch of green at the southern edge of town complete with its own temple. Some advice: Leave your snacks at home and do not buy any bananas.

When the night comes Bali is going to offer great experience of fire dances, mask dances, trance dances, monster dances and puppet shows, all of which have been refined over the centuries to the point that eyeballs, fingertips and toes all move in elaborate choreographed precision. On a typical night in Ubud you can take your pick from a half-dozen different shows.

Many of the stylish-luxury hotels in Ubud are built along the top of the gorge that the Ayung River runs through. There’s a good reason for that: the views are outstanding. Down on the river, climb aboard a rubber raft and watch the thick vines, low-flying swallows and waterfalls go by.

The Botanic Garden Ubud opened last summer — a magical park with extraordinary lilies, banana twist orchids and a miniature rainforest. Have a snack at the Chocolate House Cafe, which is housed in a 130-year-old jogglo, a traditional Javanese hut made of teak wood. The guava and passion fruit juices (12,000 rupiah) are garden fresh and the chicken kutu kaja, which is cooked slowly in banana leaves and served with red Tabanan rice, is a local specialty (42,000 rupiah). The menu rotates, but if it has it, don’t miss the coconut and jackfruit ice puter, ice cream made with coconut milk in a hand-cranked drum.

PARADISE WITHIN PARADISE

Located on the shores of the Java Sea, Jakarta is a bustling metropolis and country’s capital offering all kinds of attractions, from museums, art and antique markets, first class shopping to accomondations, food and wide variety of cultural activities.

Jakarta also has prime attraction from Indonesia’s past. The National Museum holds a vast collection of historical, prehistoric, archeological and ethnographic artifacts and relics of the various ethnic groups in Indonesia. The Jakarta Historical Museum is housed in the former 17th – 18th century Dutch East Indies Company’s Town Hall. A collection of over 327 kinds of textiles from all over the country; hand-woven cotton, silk and batik cloths, both of the ancient and contemporary productions are housed in the Textile Museum. A small workshop shows the process of batik making. The Wayang Museum holds a collections of wayang puppets from parts of Indonesia and southeast Asia. Shortened performances of the wayang kulit (leather puppets) are given every Sunday morning.

In the old town area and Chinatown in North Jakarta, warehouses of The Dutch East Indies Company and period buildings still stand. And within minutes, reach Sunda Kelapa, a fishermen’s wharf and an inter island port that provides a safe harbor for tall-masted Bugis schooners.
The culture and traditions of Jakarta’s habitants, the Betawi people, are preserved at several of the city’s Betawi culture reserves, such as Situ Babakan in South Jakarta. See their traditional designed houses, and you may just stumble on a traditional performance, such as the Tanjidor Orchestra, The Topeng Blantek dance and Betawi wayang performances.Despite its bustling and noisy nature, Jakarta has its share of places that promise tranquility and relaxation. Spas offers professional pampering service with floral baths, body scrubs, aromatic oils, massages and meditations, rituals and treatments that use spices and aromatic herbs to promote physical and mental wellness.

Jakarta’s lush tropical landscapes and challenging greens come as a surprise. Over 30 world-class golf courses are found in and around the city, designed by some of the world-renowned golf course architects and by great players.

A recreation and entertainment venue for the whole family, the Jaya Ancol Dreamland is a fantasy theme park boasting different fun rides, Sea World, swimming pools, fishing, boating, an art market, night clubs, restaurants and first-class hotels.

Lying just off the Bay of Jakarts, the Thousand Island or Pulau Seribu is a cluster of islands offering an array of activities: sunbathing vigorous water sports, camping or enjoying first-class accommodations. Clear water and pretty coral reefs also make fabulous diving sites that take only about two hours to reach from the Ancol Marina.

Bromo is a popular tourist destination in East Java.
The volcano is noted for its spectacular sunrises, and majestic views across to Semeru volcano in the south.
Two people were killled during an eruption of Bromo on 8th June 2004.
Bromo is the only active crater in a caldera which contains seven eruptive centres.
In 1838 the crater was filled with a lake.
The Ngadisari caldera at the NE end of the complex formed about 150,000 years ago and is now drained through the Sapikerep Valley. The most recent of the Tengger calderas is the 9 x 10 km wide Sandsea Caldera at the SW end of the complex, which formed incrementally during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. An overlapping cluster of post-caldera cones was constructed on the floor of the Sandsea Caldera within the last several thousand years. The youngest of these is Bromo, one of Java’s most active and most frequently visited volcanoes.
Location : East Java, Indonesia, 7.942°S / 112.95°E
Summit elevation 2329 m (7,641 ft)

Borobudur, the great Buddhist stupa on Java, Indonesia. The Borobudur Temple is considered as one of the seven wonders of the world. Constructed out of an estimated 1,600,000 blocks of volcanic stone, dredged from the river and assembled solely by human labor. Following in the footsteps of various discoverers, let us visit this unique and magnificent monument. Built and decorated perhaps before 800ad, should be on any body’s list of the ten greatest art – complexes in the world for its size, quality, sophistication and excellent state of preservation. The Borobodur Temple complex is one of the greatest monuments in the world. The structure, composed of 55,000 square meters of lava-rock is erected on a hill in the form of a stepped-pyramid of six rectangular storeys, three circular terraces and a central stupa forming the summit. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 sq. m. The whole structure is in the form of a lotus, the sacred flower of Buddha. Besides being the highest symbol of Buddhism, the Borobodur stupa is also a replica of the universe.

The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path circumambulating the monument while ascending to the top through the three levels namely Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu and Arupadhatu. The 1300 bas-reliefs along the balustrades corridors of the square galleries forming the next five levels of terraces.Upon the upper three terraces are 72 small stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. It symbolises the micro-cosmos in which man’s world of desire is influenced by negative impulses, the middle level, the world in which man has control of his negative impulses and uses his positive impulses. The peak of the structure is a central stupa. The two chambers inside the stupa are empty and it is unclear whether they were empty from the beginning as a representation of nirvana.

The excavation of the monument, known as Borobudur has been ordered by Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles in 1814. He found the temple in wined condition and ordered that the site be cleared of undergrowth and thoroughly surveyed. The massive restoration project began from 1905. It’s takes eight years of labor and unprecedented international cooperation to complete. The second restoration to rescue Borobudur was carried out from August 1968 to 1983 with the help of UNESCO. Souvenir hunters decapitate many of the Buddhas and ship them to mansions and museums throughout the world. For the weary tourist, a tea house is built high on the crumbling central stupa. Representing Nirvana.

Lovers of Good Food instantly feel at home on Aruba. Culinary specialties from all over the world can be enjoyed there in a seemingly endless range of fine restaurants. You want to feast on the deep sea delights of the Caribbean, apply your chop sticks to an Indonesian Rice Table or have a romantic French Dinner a Deux? You will find it on Aruba, and much more. International cuisine run fast from French to Fusion, from Italian to Indian, from Japanese to Javanese and from Argentinean steakhouses to Caribbean-style seafood restaurants. Local cuisine carries it own distinction with the sharp taste of a local “yerbe hole” basil bringing out the best of the “catch of the day.”

Aruba`s culinary traditions were born out of the abundance of the sea. From the time that the first people populated Aruba, conch, tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, grouper and snapper were staples brought home by island fishermen and shared amongst the community with a sense of celebration. Today fresh seafood still comprises a favorite dish, with traditional meals accented by native herbs and spices. This place is so great. They have diffrent of national dishes:* They have something like a pancake that is called “Pan Bati“. It tastes so good. The restaurant is known for seafood, but it’s cooked with a local taste and a nice sauce.
* Grouper sandwich: this fish inhabits shallow to mid-range reefs and is a white, sweet, mild-tasting fish. Fried in a proper batter, grouper is the main ingredient of many a lunch sandwich.

* Keshi Yena has its roots in Aruba’s Dutch influence: cooks take a wheel of Gouda cheese, pack the hollowed-out center with a spicy meat mixture of either chicken or beef, and then bake the whole concoction to be eaten year-round but particularly at Christmas.
* Lamb or goat stew (stoba).
* Cala (bean fritters).
* Pastechi are meat- or cheese-stuffed turnovers.
* Take a bite of ayacas, which are leaf-wrapped meat rolls.
* The delicious sopi di pisca (fish chowder) makes the most of the elements.Enjoy your meal !

It is of uncertain age, but thought to have been built between the end of the seventh and beginning of the eighth century A.D. For about a century and a half it was the spiritual centre of Buddhism in Java, then it was lost until its rediscovery in the eighteenth century. The structure, composed of 55,000 square meters of lava-rock is erected on a hill in the form of a stepped-pyramid of six rectangular storeys, three circular terraces and a central stupa forming the summit. The whole structure is in the form of a lotus, the sacred flower of Buddha. For each direction there are ninety-two Dhyani Buddha statues and 1,460 relief scenes. The lowest level has 160 reliefs depicting cause and effect; the middle level contains various stories of the Buddha’s life from the Jataka Tales; the highest level has no reliefs or decorations whatsoever but has a balcony, square in shape with round walls: a circle without beginning or end. Here is the place of the ninety-two Vajrasattvas or Dhyani Buddhas tucked into small stupas. Each of these statues has a mudra (hand gesture) indicating one of the five directions: east, with the mudra of calling the earth to witness; south, with the hand position of blessing; west, with the gesture of meditation; north, the mudra of fearlessness; and the centre with the gesture of teaching. Besides being the highest symbol of Buddhism, the Borobodur stupa is also a replica of the universe. It symbolises the micro-cosmos, which is divided into three levels, in which man’s world of desire is influenced by negative impulses; the middle level, the world in which man has control of his negative impulses and uses his positive impulses; the highest level, in which the world of man is no longer bounded by physical and worldly ancient desire. It is devotional practice to circumambulate around the galleries and terraces always turning to the left and keeping the edifice to the right while either chanting or meditating. In total, Borobodur represents the ten levels of a Bodhisattva’s life which he or she must develop to become a Buddha or an awakened one. The monument was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s.
