The largest collection of contemporary Indian Art

New Delhi has given India some of the finest names in the field of art like Anita Dube, Abhishek Hazra and Jayanta Roy. The art and craft culture in the city encompasses paintings, handmade accessories, wooden handicrafts, items made from cane, bamboo, conch-shell, ivory and bell metal etc. The Delhi Art Gallery has become distinguished for its focus on 20th century Indian art. Its museum-like collections range from the early-moderns to the moderns, including all the masters and senior artists of the movement all the way to more recent contemporary art.

Delhi Art Gallery, unlike most others, owns its entire, exhaustive collection. It is, simply, the most important institution for 20th century Indian art not just in India but around the world. The Delhi Art Gallery was started by Rama Anand in 1993. Ashish Anand, director, DAG, took over the gallery from his mother in 1996 to give it its current shape, volume and credibility.

Current exhibitions (until 20 August): “A Retrospective” by Chittaprosad. He is one of India’s most principled, humane and compassionate painters. His work here is documented in full, comprising of his political drawings, his propaganda posters, his and his experiments across mediums that included puppetry. This is among the most important exhibitions ever to be mounted on an artist in India. Closed on Mondays. Source: http://www.delhiartgallery.com/
