Yankee Stadium
Welcome to the greatest sports facility in the New York City - the Yankees Stadium! Located in the Bronx, Yankee Stadium is just over the bridge from Manhattan and is home to the New York Yankees baseball team. This is the “new” Yankee Stadium which looks similar to the original 1923 Yankee Stadium. Built on 97,000 m2 of public parkland, the new ballpark was opened in 2009, when the Yankees hosted a workout day in front of fans from the Bronx community. The project is part of a larger redevelopment plan that includes a hotel, conference center and high school for sports-related careers.
Designed by Osborn Engineering (1923) and Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury (1976), the construction was done by White Construction Company in 1923 at the cost of $2.5 million and the renovation in 1976 cost $160 million. It was the third most expensive stadium after Wembley Stadium in London and New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Since its debut in 1923, Yankee Stadium has played host to more Hall of Famers and World Series champions than any stadium ever built. The Yankees are deep in history with an MLB leading 26 World Series championships and boasting great players of old such as Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Yogi Bera, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio (the “Yankee Clipper”), Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson, and Reggie Jackson. Modern era players such as Mariano Rivera, Alex Rodriquez and Yankee all-time hits leader, Derek Jeter, define Yankee pride and tradition.
