The perfect escape from the city that never sleeps

Busy at all hours, Greenwich Village in New York City has always been a favorite hangout for the creative and rebellious. Often simply called “the Village”, Greenwich Village is a largely residential neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. The Village has certainly got its charm! The zigzagging streets and charming brownstones of the village have a far more laid back atmosphere than most neighborhoods in the city.

By the early 1900s, the Village had fully established itself as the center of radical thinking in the United States. It was known as an artists’ haven, the bohemian capital, and the East Coast birthplace of the Beat movement. Famous reformers, artists and intellectuals all gathered here - and many still do. Cozy cafes, antique shops, upscale boutiques, shops and parks complete the picture.

Today it is a joy to walk through the streets of Greenwich Village. There are many secret courtyards and small gardens nestled between townhouses in the residential blocks of Greenwich Village. The streets are still laid out along the original 18th century farm lanes and property lines before city planners superimposed the grid patterns on the rest of Manhattan. The crooked, quirky streets and mostly landmarked brownstones make you feel that the neighborhood stopped in time well over a century ago. Manhattan’s Greenwich Village offers visitors an escape from the skyscrapers.
