Coney Island

Situated in the southernmost part of Brooklyn, just a stone’s throw away from Manhattan, Coney Island is a year-round entertainment destination full of fun things to do. Opened to the public in distant 1829, the Island became a favorite vacation spot for the rich and famous. The island is possibly best known as the site of amusement parks and a major resort that reached their peak during the first half of the 20th century. With nearly 3 miles of sandy beaches, Coney Island offers an ideal summer respite from the hectic and steamy city.

Though its popularity declined after World War II, Coney Island New York can still lay claim to being a player among New York City attractions and remains a viable portion of New York tourism. Check out the New York Aquarium, the Abe Stark Ice Skating Rink, or the MCU Park (formerly KeySpan Park) baseball stadium where you can see the minor league Mets (the Brooklyn Cyclones) play ball.  On May 28, 2010, the Luna Park was upgraded. Featuring 19 brand new rides, 6 games and 5 food kiosks, Luna Park attracted 450,000 visitors during its first season.

With courts for beach volleyball, handball, and basketball as well as playgrounds and amusement rides, the beach and boardwalk can provide hours of entertainment. The Coney Island Aquarium is also a must-see. Opened its doors in 1957, it offers various educational programs and tours, and is noted for its Beluga Whales. The Coney Island Aquarium is New York City’s only aquarium, and includes over 350 species of aquatic wildlife and is open every day of the year.
