One of the finest museums in Iran

Situated on the west side the very lovely Laleh Park in the center of the capital, Tehran, the Museum of Contemporary Art is surrounded by 7000 sq. m of sculpture park, in which sculptures by renowned international and Iranian artists are on display. The Park is home to works by a number of the world’s leading sculptors, including “Capricorn” by Max Ernst; “The Prickly Pear” by Alexander Calder; “The Reclining Figure” by “Henry Moore” and more. The museum is considered to have the largest collection of valuable Western modern art outside of Europe and the United States.

The museum building was designed by Iranian architect Kamran Diba used elements from traditional Persian architecture. Built in three floors and inspired by the wind-towers of Iran, the low-lying dun-brick building functioning as Tehran’s most important museum of contemporary art has been used as a permanent exhibition since 1977. Labyrinthine corridors spin off the central hall and guide you through the history of modern Iranian art. It is said that there is approximately £2.5 billion worth of modern art held at the museum. The Museum of Contemporary Art has nine galleries, three of which are dedicated to paintings by international artists from the museum’s permanent collection. The permanent collection contains paintings from artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Rene Magritte, Andy Warhol and many more.
