Bryanston Organic Market

The Bryanston Organic Natural Market is Johannesburg‘s original outdoor market. If you have the chance to visit it, you will enter an environment where the emphasis is on quality hand crafted goods, unique art and photography, clothing made from natural fibres, a deli filled with rich, wholesome foods and, of course, fresh organic and naturally grown produce.

You will bump into a wonderful and friendly ambience in their eateries – the Photosynthesis Tea Garden, Cami’s Pancakes, The Coffee Bean Gelateria, Bettina’s Coffee Shop and the Pizza Place. You can relax and listen to live music while eating delicious, freshly prepared cakes and muffins, light meals, Ethiopian or Italian coffee and herb teas. Over the last thirty-three years they have grown and changed but the market remains committed to the ideals of wholeness and freshness; of ensuring that we pass on a healthy world to our children.

It was back in 1976 that motorists on Bryanston Drive in northern Johannesburg first noticed strange happenings at the Michael Mount Waldorf School. Every Thursday morning, a group of women garbed in long frocks and straw hats gathered around several bakkies and cars with open boots. Intrigued, a few of the drivers stopped and became the first customers of the modern movement towards healthy living! Word soon spread that the ladies were selling farm fresh vegetables, organically grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides and from these humble beginnings South Africa’s first and best open air market began.

Today the Bryanston Organic & Natural Market is a leading light in the organic movement. The market continues to promote products and activities that aid the healing of the earth and its people. They provide an holistic, supportive environment for organic farmers, artists, crafters and musicians to earn a living and express their talents.
