The Teatro all’Antica

The Antique Theatre in Sabbioneta, Italy was built between 1588 and 1590 by the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi Vicenza and is the most important building in town, plays a major role in building theatrical constitutes the first example of a  permanent theater was built from nothing, constrained by existing structures.

The stylish exterior has two orders, the string course  bears the  inscription  “ROMA QVANTA FVIT IPSA RVINA DOCET” (The same ruins teach how great was Rome). On the raised stage, there is a fixed scene: the original was  destroyed  in the eighteenth century, the present is a reconstruction built in the late twentieth century.

 

The building was completed in February 1590 and inaugurated with the celebration of the carnival so the theater, as throughout the city, experienced a long period of decline. It was in later centuries used for the purposes different until the fifties of last century when they began restoration work.
