Tottenham Marshes
Located just six miles from the center of London, this large public open space is a mosaic of trees, shrubs, rough grassland and waterways making it an important wildlife area. The network of pathways are ideal for walking, running and cycling as well as watching wildlife, stopping for refreshments and even hiring a canoe or bike.
The marshes have a varied history, from Lammes meadows in the 19th century providing local people with food for their animals, to helping with food shortage during the First World War and the “Tottenham Outrage” in 1909 when a dramatic pursuit chased two robbers across the marshes and over Chalk Bridge. The glorious grassland provides a home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Look out for Field Vole, Speckled Wood Butterfly, Wasp Spider and Bee Orchid. The park is open 24 hours a day, everyday and admission is free.
