GL STRAND
GL STRAND is one of the oldest exhibition places in Copenhagen, Denmark and is situated in the centre of Gl. Strand. In late summer 2010 the gallery reopened its doors for a newly refurbished and future art gallery. GL STRAND features five to six major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art annually. The main aim of these exhibitions is to reflect upon the present time by use of two strategies: the first one through classical masters of modern art with relevant contemporary aspects, and the second one through exhibitions with artist who embody the latest tendencies on the Danish and international art scenes.

As an exhibition place GL. STRAND does not owns a permanent collection of art. This gives the hall a great deal of freedom and openness that is different from the other traditional museums. GL STRAND’s long exhibition history counts innovative artists such as Edvard Munch (exhibited in 1908), Vilhelm Hammershoi (1916), Robert Jacobsen and Richard Mortensen (1949), Asger Jorn (1953), John Kørner (2004) and Eija-Liisa Athila(2007).

GL STRAND is also an open institution rich in tradition and central to the city’s art life both in terms of history, geography and significance. Since its foundation in 1825 Kunstforeningen GL STRAND has resided at various addresses in Copenhagen’s city centre and has already celebrated its 180 years anniversary.

On the 5th of february 2011 the doors will open to two new international exhibitions. Go to GL. STRAND to see “WAX – Sensation in contemporary Sculpture” with wax artworks from a wide selection of contemporary international artists. At the same time it will also be possible to take a look at the poetic exhibition “Louise Bourgeois – Mother and Child” where gouache works and selected sculptures, produced from 2002-2009, will create a beautiful and intimate exhibition.

GL STRAND arrange guided tours for groups, companies, school classes and other interested parties both in- and outside of regular opening hours. The gallery is situated near by the Kongesn Nytorv metro station.
