Urban Sofia

Crossing over Maria Luisa Blvd you will see the beautiful restored Halite, the former food market built in 1909 by an architect Naum Torbov. Covers 7200 sq m that are distributed on 3 floors, the Halite were the first covered market in Bulgaria. Once again the main focus of the shops inside is food, with stalls selling fresh fish and special dietary foods, as well as a variety of other shops.

The style of the building is Neo-Renaissance, featuring also elements of Neo-Byzantine architecture and Neo-Baroque. The attraction of the Hali is an old clock that was made in 1914. On the mezzanine level overlooking the hall there is a food-court offering a variety of fast food. In the basement area, surrounded by more Roman ruins, is a Bulgarian full-service restaurant. It’s a wonderful place to spend an hour or two, shopping delicious food or presents, or just sitting in the café, watching the people.
