Faustino Winery
Located 150km north of Madrid, Faustino is a new winery in the Ribera del Duero, one of Spain’s foremost wine-producing regions. Opens in 1 November 2010, it is designed by Foster + Partners. The winery is maked to take advantage of the sloping terrain, using gravity to aid movement of the grapes within the building, maximising efficiency and minimising damage to the grapes. Photographs by Nigel Young, Foster + Partners.

The winery presented the opportunity to look afresh at the winery as a building type. Using the topography of the site to aid the winemaking process, this 12,500 sq m complex is spread over three distinct wings anchored by a central operations hub at the core. The building’s trefoil design provide separate spaces for the three main stages of wine production: fermentation in steel vats, ageing in oak barrels and finally, ageing in bottles.
All public areas of the facility have been lined with a range of extensive terraces and pools afford panoramic views across the surrounding vineyards. Open Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. by appointment.
