Vashon Island Cabin

This project consists of the remodel an existing one story cabin with a daylight basement. The house is designed by Vandeventer + Carlander Architects in Vashon Island, Washington, USA. The old cabin is demolished to the main floor, as there are tight site development restrictions. With a broad program that calls for additional floors, the design concept evolved into making a small addition, replacing a previous exterior deck.

The addition is a wood box “insertion” which extends into the main structure. It slides in over the existing floor structure and cantilevers out over existing basement walls. The wooden box contains master bedroom, bath and kitchen. The daylight basement includes a family room, two bedrooms, and a new bath, laundry and TV area.

The exterior form and materials of the box are continued to the interior. Clerestory windows separate the box from the new shed roof above, large sliding doors open onto a rebuilt wood deck to the west and expanding the interior outside for entertaining. An existing masonry fireplace and wall on the north side of the cabin are the only elements preserved at this floor from the existing cabin. You can walk and explore the sandy beach all day and fish off the bulkhead at night. Wake up in the morning and enjoy your coffee on the deck as you watch the seagulls and listen to the waves.
