In 1850 the Palace was sold to Mr Antonio Afonso Velado, one of the richest merchant of the city, who was nominated by King D.Luis as Freixo’s Baron and Viscount. Designed by the Italian architect Nasoni and built in the mid 19th century, the Freixo Palace is one of the most remarkable examples of Portuguese civil architecture from the Baroque period. The Pousada has preserved the entire facade of the palace buildings, which became a National Monument in 1910.
